Prison Run and Gun is a retro puzzle platformer in which escaping is as much about manipulating the prison as it is about shooting. The key beginner lesson is that a gun can be both a weapon and a switch: gunfire can activate environmental patterns that open doors, platforms, or other escape routes, while carrying that gun slows your movement. The safest approach is to learn the controls in a quiet area, identify what each room reacts to, trigger the route, and then decide whether the weapon is still worth its movement penalty.
The game does not publish a complete keyboard map on its Steam store page, and its control scheme has been described as unusual. Steam recommends an XInput gamepad, so a compatible controller is the clearest starting point if keyboard movement feels awkward. The guide below separates documented facts from practical tactics you can apply while learning the game’s 30 sections.
What Prison Run and Gun is
Quantized Bit released Prison Run and Gun on March 16, 2016, for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux. Steam describes the premise as a prisoner escaping after a prison incident, using skills and guns to break through 30 sections. The store listing records eight Steam achievements and, at the time of the source check, 494 user reviews with 90% positive sentiment.

Those numbers describe the game’s scope, not a recommended difficulty order. The important design idea is the combination of platforming and gun-triggered environmental puzzles. A room may ask you to move carefully, fire at the correct object, observe the resulting change, and then traverse the newly opened path. Treating every encounter as a conventional run-and-gun fight can therefore leave you stuck even when no enemy is blocking the way.

What the available documentation does not establish
- The Steam page does not provide a complete keyboard key table.
- No authoritative weapon damage ranking, weapon tier list, or ammunition count for every section is established.
- A complete, verified solution for all 30 sections is not available in the documented material.
That means the most reliable beginner advice is about process: verify your bindings, test the room’s interactive object, monitor how carrying a gun changes movement, and keep notes about what opened the route.
Controls: start with the setup the game recommends
Steam explicitly says an XInput Gamepad recommended. XInput is the controller interface used by many Windows-compatible gamepads. If your keyboard inputs feel delayed, unintuitive, or difficult to combine with jumping and aiming, connecting an XInput-compatible pad is the first troubleshooting step rather than trying to memorize an undocumented key map.
First-launch control checklist
- Start the game and open its Options menu before entering a difficult section.
- Look for the installed control or binding display and identify movement, jump, fire, weapon handling, and any drop or switch action shown there.
- Press each action once in a safe area. Confirm that the game responds to the input you expect instead of assuming a familiar platformer layout.
- If you are using a controller, verify that it is recognized as an XInput device before changing bindings.
- Play a short, low-risk segment and check whether the same input behaves consistently while standing, moving, jumping, and carrying a weapon.
The unusual-feeling control scheme matters because a missed input can look like a level-design problem. Before deciding that a jump or escape route is impossible, confirm that the action is actually bound and that you can trigger it reliably.

| Consideration | Keyboard | XInput gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Official guidance | The store page does not publish a complete key table; use the bindings shown in your installation. | Steam explicitly recommends an XInput gamepad. |
| Remapping | Potentially convenient if the installation exposes keyboard bindings, but the exact options are not documented. | Use the game’s displayed controller bindings; availability of per-button remapping depends on your installation. |
| Movement precision | Digital, on/off directional input can be useful for deliberate taps but may feel abrupt. | Analog movement can make controlled repositioning easier, especially when a carried gun slows you. |
| Best beginner use | Keep it if the displayed bindings are comfortable and every action registers consistently. | Prefer it when the keyboard layout feels unusual or when small movement adjustments are difficult. |
This is a practical comparison, not a claim that one device is universally faster. The game’s documented recommendation is the controller; your own comfort and the bindings shown in your copy should decide the final choice.

When an input appears not to work
- Reopen Options and verify the assigned action instead of relying on a remembered key from another game.
- Test the action without a weapon and then while carrying one; the movement penalty can make a successful command look ineffective.
- Check whether the action requires a particular state, such as standing near an interactive object, rather than being a free-standing command.
- With a controller, reconnect or reselect the XInput device if the game stops seeing button presses.
- If a route still does not react, inspect the room for the environmental target that gunfire is meant to trigger before assuming the control is broken.
How guns work in the puzzle system
In this game, a gun is not merely an answer to an enemy encounter. The documented review says weapons can set off environmental patterns that open escape routes. In practical terms, firing may change the room itself: a door can become available, a platform arrangement can change, or another route can be exposed. The exact target and response vary by section, so observation is more valuable than blindly firing.
A repeatable room-reading method
- Pause before rushing. Look across the room for doors, platforms, barriers, switches, or conspicuous objects that appear connected to the path ahead.
- Choose the obvious target. Start with the environmental object that visually sits between you and the next route. This is a testing method, not a guarantee that every puzzle uses the same target.
- Fire once and observe. Watch for a change in the environment before spending additional ammunition.
- Confirm the route. Move far enough to establish whether the change actually opened a usable path rather than merely producing a visual effect.
- Record the relationship. Mentally note which weapon or shot caused the change and what became accessible.
- Reassess your loadout. Once the mechanism has done its job, decide whether holding the weapon helps the next task or only slows traversal.
This method limits wasted shots and prevents a common mistake: abandoning a weapon immediately after using it, without checking whether the same weapon is needed for a second mechanism in the room.
Why the “strongest gun” is not automatically best
No documented source supplies a damage ranking or weapon tier list, so there is no evidence-based list of one universally superior gun. The meaningful beginner trade-off is functional rather than numerical:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Route activation: Can this weapon trigger the environmental response you need?
- Ammunition economy: Can you test the mechanism without wasting shots you may need later?
- Mobility cost: Does carrying it make the next jump or traversal segment harder?
A weapon that opens the route is valuable even if it is not the most powerful option in a fight. Conversely, once the route is active, a weapon that offers no immediate puzzle or combat benefit may be a liability because of the documented movement slowdown.

Why you move slowly with a gun
The review identifies a direct movement penalty: carrying a weapon slows the character. This is an intentional route-planning constraint, not necessarily a failed input or a performance problem. A jump that is comfortable while unarmed can become difficult when the character is carrying a gun.
The practical weapon-to-mobility loop
- Carry the weapon into the room when it is needed to activate the mechanism.
- Trigger the environmental response and verify that the escape path is genuinely available.
- Switch or drop the weapon when the next movement section rewards speed and the gun is no longer required immediately.
- Attempt the traversal again with the lighter movement state.
- If the route still fails, restore the weapon only if another mechanism or enemy requires it, then look for a different approach rather than repeatedly forcing the same jump.
The review supports switching or dropping a weapon after it has served its purpose. It does not establish that every section permits dropping every gun at every location, so treat the action as an option to test in your installation, not as a universal rule.
Diagnosing a seemingly impossible jump
- Repeat the jump without the carried weapon if the room allows you to set it aside.
- Check whether a platform or door changed after the shot; the intended route may not be the first visible ledge.
- Approach the jump with the input rhythm you practiced in a safe area rather than holding every direction continuously.
- Look for a route-activation target you skipped. A blocked path can be a puzzle state, not a platforming failure.
- Only after those checks should you treat the jump as a likely control or timing issue.
Escape-route strategy for every section
The prison sections are best approached as small experiments. You are not required to guess the complete solution immediately; you need to identify the interaction that changes the room and then use the resulting space efficiently.
Six questions to ask when entering a new room
- What is the apparent exit? Identify the door, corridor, upper platform, or opening that represents progress.
- What prevents access? Name the visible barrier rather than shooting randomly.
- Which object could react to gunfire? Look for an exposed or conspicuous environmental element near the blocked route.
- Which weapon is currently available? Do not assume that a different gun is better when the immediate requirement is simply triggering the mechanism.
- What changed after firing? Wait long enough to observe a door, platform, or other environmental pattern before moving on.
- What does the next movement demand? Keep the gun if another trigger or threat requires it; otherwise prioritize the faster movement state.
Writing a short note such as “upper door responds to the carried gun; traverse without it” can prevent repeated experiments if you fall or revisit the area. The note does not need to identify weapon damage or hidden statistics; record only the cause-and-effect relationship you observed.

Safe experimentation rules
- Test one change at a time so you know which shot produced the result.
- Use the minimum shots needed to confirm a mechanism.
- Stand where you can observe the target and the route at the same time when possible.
- After a successful trigger, pause and plan the traversal before moving into the newly opened space.
- If an experiment fails, restore your previous position and try a different environmental target instead of repeating the same shot.
Managing ammunition and weapons without a tier list
The available evidence supports ammunition awareness but does not provide exact capacities, replenishment rules, or damage values. You can still make sound decisions by treating ammunition as a resource tied to puzzle discovery.
Use a three-part decision test
| Question | If the answer is yes | If the answer is no |
|---|---|---|
| Does this weapon activate the route? | Keep it until the environmental change is confirmed. | Search for another target or weapon rather than firing repeatedly. |
| Will another mechanism require it soon? | Carry it despite the movement cost and plan a safer traversal. | Consider switching or dropping it after the current trigger. |
| Does the next segment demand precise movement? | Prioritize mobility if the weapon is no longer essential. | Retain the weapon only for a clearly identified purpose. |
This framework avoids unsupported claims about which gun is strongest. It also reflects the central design tension documented by the review: the item that gives you access can make the following movement harder.

Blocked-stage troubleshooting
- Recheck controls. Open Options, verify the relevant binding, and practice the action away from the obstacle.
- Inspect the entire room. Look above, below, and behind the obvious path for an environmental object that can react to gunfire.
- Test the weapon state. Fire once at the most plausible target, observe the result, and then try the movement section without the weapon if the route is open.
- Review the movement penalty. If the jump feels short or the character accelerates differently, remove the carried gun where the game permits.
- Use a level-specific reference. AppsMeNow maintains a broad Prison Run and Gun walkthrough and tips index updated September 10, 2026. It can provide targeted help when your own observation has not identified the trigger, but the index should supplement—not replace—the control and weapon checks above.
Because the available walkthrough description does not expose every individual solution, do not assume an index entry will provide a complete input sequence for every obstacle. Use the section name or visible landmark to find the closest relevant guidance, then verify the result in your own installation.

Planning a full playthrough
The game’s 30-section structure rewards a consistent note-taking habit. After each successful escape, retain three pieces of information: the object that reacted, the weapon state that worked, and whether the next traversal was easier after switching or dropping the gun.
A compact section log
| Log item | What to write |
|---|---|
| Trigger | The environmental object or pattern that responded to gunfire. |
| Required weapon | The weapon you used, without assuming it is the most powerful option. |
| Route change | What became accessible: a door, platform, corridor, or other escape path. |
| Movement state | Whether the successful traversal was performed while carrying, switching, or dropping the weapon. |
| Unresolved detail | Any jump timing or control input that still feels inconsistent. |
This log prevents circular experimentation and makes the movement-versus-firepower trade-off visible over time. It also gives you a useful diagnostic record if you return to an earlier section after changing from keyboard to controller.
Achievements and completion expectations
Steam lists eight achievements. Their presence confirms that the game tracks additional milestones, but the documented material does not specify their conditions. Do not infer achievement requirements from the section count or from a particular weapon choice; check the achievement text in your Steam client for the exact requirement.
Quick reference: the beginner’s operating procedure
- Choose an XInput-compatible gamepad if the keyboard scheme feels awkward.
- Open Options and verify every movement, jump, fire, and weapon-handling binding shown by your installation.
- Read a room before advancing and identify the environmental object that appears connected to the blocked route.
- Fire the minimum test shot, watch for the environmental change, and confirm that the route is usable.
- Keep a mental note of which weapon activated the route.
- Switch or drop the weapon before a precision movement segment when it is no longer needed.
- If progress stops, recheck controls and the weapon penalty before searching for a walkthrough.
- For a specific unresolved section, consult the AppsMeNow walkthrough index updated September 10, 2026, and match its advice to the landmark in your game.
The central habit is simple: use guns to change the prison, then use the lightest movement state that still lets you complete the next task. Once you treat shooting, route activation, and mobility as one connected puzzle, the unusual controls and apparent dead ends become much easier to diagnose.
