Start with Windows 11’s automated printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app, then check the printer connection, print queue, model-specific driver, and Print Spooler if needed. The exact printer-specific cause of error 0x800706b5 is not established by the available sources, so treat these as diagnostic steps—not a guaranteed fix.

How to fix printer error 0x800706b5 in Windows 11

  1. Record when the error appears. Note whether it happens while adding the printer, sending a print job, restarting Windows, or printing from one particular app. Also note whether the printer connects by USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a shared network.
  2. Run Microsoft’s printer troubleshooter. Open the Get Help app in Windows 11, run the automated printer troubleshooter, and follow the issue-specific results. Microsoft recommends this as the starting point for Windows 11 printer problems. See Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting guide.
  3. Check the printer and connection. Make sure the printer is powered on and connected. For USB, check that the cable is firmly connected; for a network printer, confirm it is available on the same network or shared connection you normally use. Restart the printer, then restart the PC if appropriate.
  4. Check the selected printer and queue. In Windows, confirm the intended printer is selected. Open its print queue and cancel stalled jobs. If the error occurs only in one application, try printing from another app to help determine whether the issue is app-specific.
  5. Install the current driver for the exact model. Get the driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support site, matching the precise model and Windows version. Avoid generic driver-download sites. Microsoft notes an exception for some ARM PCs: if the manufacturer’s installer does not work, install the printer through Windows Settings instead.
  6. Restart Print Spooler if jobs remain stuck. Use this step when the queue will not clear or the spooler appears to have stopped; it is a general troubleshooting branch, not a confirmed cause of this particular error.
  7. Test with a new print job. If 0x800706b5 persists, record the exact message, printer model, connection type, Windows version/build, when the error appears, and whether multiple apps are affected. Contact the printer manufacturer for model-specific diagnosis, or Microsoft support if the evidence points to a Windows component.

Check the print queue and Print Spooler

The Print Spooler manages Windows print jobs. A queue that remains stuck or an unresponsive printer can justify checking the service, but neither symptom proves that the spooler caused error 0x800706b5. Microsoft’s guidance covers canceling queued jobs and restarting the service. Follow Microsoft’s Print Spooler troubleshooting steps.

Restart the service

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In Services, find Print Spooler.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start if the service is stopped.
  4. Try printing a new job.

Reset the queue only if simpler steps fail

Microsoft’s broader procedure stops the Print Spooler, removes the files in its printer queue folder, and starts the service again with Automatic startup. Deleting those files removes pending print jobs, so use this only if you are prepared to lose the queued jobs.

  1. Open Services by pressing Windows key + R, entering services.msc, and pressing Enter. Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
  2. In File Explorer’s address bar, enter %WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS. Delete the files in that folder. If Windows blocks access, use an administrator account.
  3. Return to Services, open Print Spooler, select Start, and set Startup type to Automatic in its Properties if it is not already set.
  4. Send a new test job.

Choose the next step based on what you observe

What you observe What to check next
Error while adding the printer or Windows does not detect it Confirm power and connection, run Get Help, then remove and re-add the printer if appropriate.
Error after sending a job; jobs remain queued Cancel stalled jobs, restart the printer and PC if appropriate, then restart Print Spooler if the queue remains stuck.
Only one application fails Try another application. If it prints successfully, focus on the affected app rather than assuming the printer or Windows service is at fault.
USB printer fails Check the cable and connection, then confirm Windows has the correct printer selected.
Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or shared printer fails Confirm the printer is powered on and reachable through its usual network or shared connection before changing drivers or resetting the queue.
Driver installation fails on an ARM PC Use the Windows Settings installation path recommended by Microsoft rather than relying on the manufacturer installer.

What error 0x800706b5 tells you—and what it does not

The reviewed sources do not establish a definitive printer-specific meaning or universal fix for 0x800706b5 on Windows 11. A Microsoft Q&A thread records a user seeing the code while printing a download to an HP Envy 7640, but it concerns Windows 10 and contains an informal driver-reinstallation suggestion—not an official diagnosis or verified resolution.
