Princeton University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science awarded 21 Innovation Research Grants in 2026, distributing more than $3 million for early-stage work in technology, health and the environment. Three projects illustrate the range: testing lunar materials for cement-like construction, seeking an antimicrobial compound against Cronobacter foodborne illness, and developing a way to detect snapshots of synaptic activity in brain wiring diagrams.
The awards are exploratory rather than finished products or treatments. They give faculty room to test high-risk ideas that could later support larger external grants.
What the 2026 Princeton Engineering grants support
The grants are funded by Princeton alumni, parents and other donors. They are designed for work that may be too preliminary or unconventional for conventional research funding, but could open a path to larger programs if early experiments succeed. The 2026 round totals more than $3 million across 21 awards; the announcement does not assign the same amount to each project.

Three projects, three different missions
Lunar cement from materials already on the moon
Professor Claire White and fourth-year Ph.D. student Sophia Bergen are investigating whether basalt and other lunar materials can be made reactive enough to mix and harden like cement. Their experiments use basalt, lunar mare simulant and minerals such as anorthosite in cement-like cubes.
The engineering problem is logistical as much as chemical. Launching construction supplies from Earth would be prohibitively expensive for a permanent lunar outpost, so future infrastructure may need to be built with local material. Basalt is common on Earth and abundant on the moon, making it a practical starting point for testing whether an extraterrestrial feedstock can become a structural binder.

The work is backed by Princeton Engineering’s Project X Fund, which supports exploratory research defined by “creativity, tinkering and risk-taking.” White called the seed grant “the right launching place to get such research off the ground.” Bergen has emphasized that studying terrestrial and lunar applications together could avoid duplicating effort: “If we’re going to be investing all this time and energy into thinking about both separately, we might as well think about them together.”

It does not establish that moon dust can already be turned into construction-grade concrete, or that a lunar habitat is ready to use the technique.

A proposed antimicrobial compound for Cronobacter
A. James Link, a professor of chemical and biological engineering, received a Tianaderrah Foundation award for “A new antimicrobial compound to prevent Cronobacter food-borne illness.” The project also has support from the O’Brien Family Health Research Fund.
Cronobacter can cause serious foodborne illness, particularly in vulnerable populations. Link’s award is aimed at discovering a new antimicrobial approach, but the grant announcement does not report a finished compound, a clinical study, an efficacy percentage, regulatory approval or a deployment date. Those results would require additional laboratory and, if warranted, clinical work.

Detecting synaptic activity in brain wiring diagrams
Christina Kim, assistant professor in the Omenn-Darling Bioengineering Institute and Princeton Neuroscience Institute, is working with Mala Murthy, the Karol and Marnie Marcin ’96 Professor of Neuroscience, and Sebastian Seung, the Evnin Professor in Neuroscience and professor of computer science.

Their project, “Detecting snapshots of synaptic activity in the wiring diagram of the brain,” seeks to identify evidence of synaptic activity within a map of neural connections. The award is supported by a fund established in memory of J. Insley Blair Pyne for research at the intersection of engineering and neuroscience.

This wording describes a research objective, not a completed brain map, diagnostic tool or clinical technology. No project-specific performance statistic is reported with the award.

All three are grant-supported objectives rather than commercial launches or clinical interventions. Their outputs will depend on whether the proposed experiments produce reproducible evidence.
When is the next Princeton Engineering grant deadline?
According to Princeton’s official 2026 report, engineering faculty proposals for the 2027 grant round are due November 30, 2026. Researchers considering an application should confirm the current call’s eligibility rules, submission route and any required internal approvals because the announcement gives the deadline but not a complete application guide.
What the announcement means for readers
The moon project addresses the cost of transporting construction materials beyond Earth; the Cronobacter project addresses antimicrobial discovery; and the brain project addresses measurement inside neural circuitry. Together they show how a relatively flexible seed-grant program can support ideas at very different technical maturities. None of the three announcements promises a moon base, a new medical product or a finished brain-mapping system, but each funds the kind of early evidence needed to determine whether a larger effort is justified.
