You do not automatically have to pay or migrate because PrimeNG’s licensing changed. Releases already published under MIT remain under those terms, while active development and new releases have moved to PrimeUI. Your choice depends on whether your current release meets your needs, whether your team qualifies for the Community license, and how much you value ongoing updates and support.
What changed—and what stayed the same
PrimeNG’s repository README says active development and new releases have moved to PrimeUI. The PrimeNG repository is no longer under active development and receives security fixes only. It also says each release published under MIT stays under MIT and existing projects are unaffected. That assurance applies to releases already published under MIT; it does not establish that future releases use MIT.
PrimeTek has described the move as applying to future major versions. In a June 2026 transition discussion, founder Cagatay Civici said the PrimeUI license would help fund “the engineering, support, and long-term maintenance behind the libraries.” That is the company’s stated rationale, not a guarantee of particular support outcomes.
Which path fits your team?
| Option | What it means | Best fit to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on an existing MIT release | Keep using the rights associated with the MIT-licensed release already in use. The repository says it receives security fixes only; it does not promise feature work or a particular support duration. | Teams whose current version meets product needs and can accept its maintenance and compatibility tradeoffs. |
| Use the Community license | Eligible teams can develop and deliver commercial applications, with up to four developer seats. Eligibility includes criteria beyond team size and must continue to be met. | Teams that meet all current eligibility conditions and can keep confirming them. |
| Buy a commercial license | Choose between per-developer and annual site licensing, with different scope and expiry consequences. | Teams needing commercial access, updates, or support that do not fit the Community terms. |
| Move to another component library | Replace PrimeNG/PrimeUI, accounting for implementation work and a different licensing and maintenance model. | Teams whose eligibility, budget, roadmap, or licensing preferences make continued use unsuitable. |
When staying on an MIT release is reasonable
There is no blanket requirement in the project’s statement for existing users to immediately pay or migrate. If your installed MIT release continues to meet your application’s needs, staying can preserve the rights attached to that release. Weigh that against the repository’s security-fix-only status and the possibility that future features or compatibility work will require a different path.

Review the license for the specific release your application uses and the terms that govern your project. The repository’s general statement is not a substitute for checking your dependencies, distribution model, or any separate agreement.
Check Community eligibility before relying on it
The official PrimeUI Community license provides up to four developer seats and requires fewer than five developers, along with additional eligibility criteria. Eligible teams may develop and deliver commercial applications. Do not treat the developer-count limit as the whole test: check the complete current terms against your team and organization.

| License structure | Updates and support | After the period ends |
|---|---|---|
| Per-developer | Includes one year of updates and support. | You retain perpetual use of versions received during the update period. Renewal restores access to new versions and continued support. |
| Site | Annual license covering developers within the agreed organization or division scope. Site licenses are individually quoted. | Renewal is required for ongoing development. Applications already deployed continue to run after expiry. |
Compare the structures using your active developer count, expected team turnover, deployment and rebuild cadence, need for new versions, and support requirements. Do not assume a site license covers an entire company: its scope is the agreed organization or division. The commercial page notes that prices may change, so confirm current terms and any quote directly with PrimeUI rather than relying on a general price estimate.
Test technical changes before upgrading
Licensing is only one part of an upgrade decision. The PrimeNG v21 migration guide highlights PassThrough attributes, Unstyled Mode, modern CSS-based animations, and initial zoneless support. It describes v21 as a drop-in replacement except for a noted animation change, but your application’s own usage still matters.

Make the decision with a team-specific checklist
- Identify the release: Confirm which PrimeNG version your application uses and the license attached to that release.
- Check the roadmap: Decide whether security fixes alone are sufficient or whether your product needs ongoing feature and compatibility work.
- Verify Community eligibility: Compare every current criterion—not just developer count—with your actual team and organization.
- Model commercial licensing: Compare per-developer seats with the site-license scope, including expiry, renewal, support, and update needs.
- Estimate migration effort: Inventory PrimeNG components and customizations, then test the specific version changes or alternative library you are considering.
- Review governing terms: Check the current license and any signed order. For material legal or financial exposure, seek qualified legal advice rather than inferring rights from a summary.
How to assess a replacement library
There is no single replacement that can be recommended for every Angular team without evaluating the application and current documentation. Compare candidates on the factors that determine practical fit:
- Coverage of the components your application actually uses.
- Accessibility behavior and the ability to meet your requirements.
- Theming and styling options, including how they interact with existing design systems.
- Compatibility with your Angular version and upgrade plans.
- Migration effort for templates, APIs, styles, and tests.
- Maintenance model, support arrangements, and license terms.
A switch is most compelling when the ongoing license model does not fit your organization and the replacement’s technical and maintenance tradeoffs are acceptable. A license change alone does not make migration automatically cheaper or safer; account for the implementation and testing work.
