A price comparison is useful only when the offers refer to the same sellable item. Similar titles and matching brands are not enough: model, variant, capacity, size, pack count, bundle, and condition can all change what is being sold. Establish product identity first, then compare prices.
Why product identity is harder than comparing prices
Retailer listings are records about products, not necessarily clean records of the products themselves. A listing may include a title, description, manufacturer, price, and sometimes a product code, but the information can be incomplete or inconsistent. In a 2012 paper on matching product offers, Christian Köpcke and coauthors describe the task as identifying offers that refer to the same real-world product. They note that matching retailer offers is difficult because the source data is not structured and standardized.
The paper reports that product identifiers such as UPCs may be missing or erroneous. Product-code extraction can help, but codes may vary or appear in misleading references to accessories. The authors therefore describe combining matchers across multiple attributes rather than relying on one field alone. Read the EDBT 2012 paper.

That is a historical result for the benchmark discussed in the paper, not a current accuracy estimate for price-comparison tools. It illustrates why an apparent match should not be treated as certain without checking the evidence.

What evidence can establish that listings match?
Start with a shared product identifier
A valid GTIN, EAN, or UPC can provide strong evidence that two offers refer to the same product, provided the identifier applies to the item and is correct. ASAP’s published UK methodology says it uses checksum-valid GTIN/EAN/UPC for exact product identity and joins prices across retailers only when they share the same valid GTIN. See ASAP’s methodology.
A checksum can detect certain invalid codes, but it does not prove that a retailer attached the right code to a listing. Treat an identifier as evidence to verify against the product details, not as infallible truth.

Check the model and the attributes that define the sale
When a shared identifier is missing or unclear, compare the manufacturer model number and the item attributes that affect what the buyer receives. These can include:
- Variant, finish, color, or size
- Capacity or other model-specific specification
- Pack count, refill status, or bundle contents
- Condition, such as new or refurbished
- Whether the listing is for the product itself or an accessory
PriceByModel says it matches refrigerator offers using the manufacturer model number, normalized for case and separators. Its approach shows why an exact model can be useful when comparing appliances, though a model number still needs to be checked against the listed configuration. Keep exact matches separate from substitutes
A related item may be a sensible alternative without being the same product. A different capacity, finish, bundle, or model should not be presented as an exact-match price. GS1’s Web URI standard describes comparison applications that can show offers for a product as well as related products that may be preferable in some way. Those are distinct kinds of comparison. How to judge whether a price comparison is trustworthy
Before relying on a displayed price, check what the comparison is actually comparing and what its coverage includes.

- Identity key: Does the service show a GTIN/EAN/UPC, manufacturer model number, or the attributes used to match offers?
- Variant precision: Are size, capacity, finish, pack count, bundle, refill, and condition treated as distinct items?
- Match transparency: Can you see why the offers were grouped, or verify model details yourself?
- Price recency and stock: Is the observation time visible, and does the retailer still show the item as available?
- Total cost: Can shipping, taxes, location, membership requirements, or promotion eligibility change the checkout price?
- Coverage: Which retailers and geographic market are included?
- Alternatives: Are near-matches clearly marked as substitutes rather than exact matches?
These are practical evaluation criteria, not a published independent ranking of comparison services. The cited service descriptions explain their own methods and scope; they do not independently verify the services’ matching results.
Why the displayed price may not be the price you pay
Even correctly matched offers can differ in usefulness because comparisons have a scope: geography, retailer coverage, stock status, delivery, taxes, and time of observation all matter. ASAP describes UK-only product records and says it publishes a comparison page when at least two distinct UK retailers stock the same barcode. Its methodology page was last reviewed August 15, 2026; that is the service’s stated policy, not an independent audit.

PriceByModel says it currently focuses on refrigerators from Best Buy and Abt. It cautions that prices, stock, delivery, taxes, and checkout totals can change by location and time. A comparison that is accurate within those limits may still not represent the options or final cost available to every shopper.
A practical check before choosing the lowest offer
- Confirm the item: Match a valid shared GTIN/EAN/UPC where available, or verify the manufacturer model number and defining attributes.
- Inspect the configuration: Check variant, capacity, size, pack count, bundle or refill status, and condition.
- Verify the retailer listing: Open the offer and make sure it is still available and describes the same item.
- Compare the real purchase terms: Check location-specific availability, delivery, taxes, and any promotion or membership conditions that apply.
- Reclassify near-matches: If an offer differs in a product-defining attribute, treat it as an alternative and weigh that difference separately.
GS1 describes comparison applications as combining product master data with retailer offers and providing current and historical online price information. That model depends on correctly associating an offer with the product record; a price history is only useful if the identity behind it is sound.
