An ESC/POS emulator lets you send the same command bytes your point-of-sale software would send to a thermal printer, then inspect a screen preview instead of printing paper. Depending on the tool, you can render saved binary or hexadecimal data, stream a live job to a virtual TCP printer on port 9100, inspect decoded commands and warnings, and replay the identical input after fixing your code. This makes layout iteration fast, while still leaving model-specific checks for a final hardware test.
What an ESC/POS emulator actually does
ESC/POS is a command language used by receipt printers. A print job is not just text: it contains control sequences for initialization, font and emphasis modes, alignment, line feeds, raster images, barcodes, QR codes, paper cutting and other device functions. Epson’s developer documentation notes that command syntax and communications are described by model-specific references, so “ESC/POS support” is not a guarantee that every printer implements every command in the same way.
An emulator interprets that stream and draws the expected receipt on screen or into an image. There are two useful input patterns:
- Offline rendering: provide saved binary bytes, hexadecimal text, standard input or a saved test case to a command-line tool or library. The result is typically a PNG or browser preview.
- Live capture: point your POS application at a virtual printer’s local IP address and TCP port, commonly port 9100. The emulator accepts the job as if it were a network printer and displays it.
The second pattern is valuable when the application creates commands internally. You do not have to alter its printer driver or copy a payload manually; change the destination to the emulator, run the normal checkout or test workflow, and examine the captured job.

A repeatable preview-and-debug workflow
- Choose the target profile. Set the paper width and printer model or profile before reviewing output. A 58 mm receipt and an 80 mm receipt have different printable widths, and profiles can also define printable dots, code pages, image limits and supported capabilities.
- Capture a representative job. Include the longest product name, discounts, tax lines, a payment total, a barcode or QR code, an image if your application prints one, and the end-of-paper operation. A one-line “hello” receipt will not expose wrapping or overflow problems.
- Send the job to the emulator. For a file-based workflow, pass binary or hexadecimal data through the tool or its standard-input interface. For a live workflow, configure the POS printer destination to the emulator computer and port 9100, then run the transaction that produces the receipt.
- Inspect the rendered receipt. Check margins, column alignment, wrapping, line spacing, image scaling, code readability and where the paper feed or cut is represented. Compare the result with the intended physical width, not with a zoomed browser window.
- Inspect the command stream. Use raw-data and decoded-command views when available. Confirm that initialization occurs at the beginning, that mode changes are followed by the intended text, and that image or code data has the expected length.
- Record warnings and unsupported operations. An emulator may identify a command it cannot render or a parameter outside the selected profile. Treat that warning as a compatibility issue to resolve, not as proof that the target printer will behave identically.
- Change one cause at a time and replay the same input. Keeping the payload constant makes it clear whether a code change fixed the layout or merely changed the test data. Save successful jobs as regression cases for future releases.
Tool choices and what each path is good for
The following implementations illustrate different ways to work. They are documented examples, not a ranked or independently tested list.
| Tool | Input and setup | Inspection and geometry | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESCPost | Rust command-line tool and library; accepts binary, hexadecimal and standard-input data, plus saved test cases. It can receive live jobs through a virtual IP printer on port 9100. | PNG rendering, browser preview and printer profiles for paper sizes, features and device behavior. Optional output to connected USB or network printers is documented. | Automated rendering, fixture-based tests and applications that need both offline and live capture. |
| POS Printer Emulator | Windows application with a local RAW TCP/IP listener. Configure the POS software to connect to the emulator computer on port 9100. | Separate receipt preview, Commands, Raw data and Job details views; profiles describe width and capabilities. | Interactive diagnosis when a developer needs to correlate a visual defect with the exact received bytes. |
| escpresso | Rust GUI emulator accepting ESC/POS over local TCP on port 9100. Its repository documents selectable 58 mm and 80 mm widths. | Documented command coverage includes text formatting, raster graphics, QR codes, barcodes, code pages and paper-control operations. | A lightweight local virtual-printer target for development and width-specific previews. |
When selecting among them, compare five practical dimensions: how your data enters the tool, whether you need decoded commands or only an image, the operating system and installation model, the stated command coverage, and how precisely the tool models your printer’s paper geometry.
Configuring a virtual network printer safely
Use the emulator computer as the printer destination
A live emulator normally listens on TCP port 9100, the port commonly used for RAW printer traffic. Enter the emulator computer’s local IP address in the POS printer configuration, not the address of a physical printer. Keep the listener on a development network; ESCPost documents local-only access by default, which limits accidental exposure.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify the connection before debugging layout
- Confirm that the emulator is running and that the selected profile is visible before launching the POS transaction.
- Check that the POS host can reach the emulator host on port 9100 and that local firewall rules permit the connection.
- Send a minimal test job, then confirm that a new job appears in the emulator’s preview and job-details panel.
- If no job appears, investigate the destination address, port, firewall and application print queue before changing receipt formatting.
Do not expose a raw printer listener to an untrusted network. A receipt stream can contain customer names, addresses, order details or payment metadata, and a TCP printer endpoint generally has no application-level authentication.

Reading the raw and decoded views
The rendered image answers “what would this profile draw?” The raw and decoded views answer “what did my application actually send?” Use both when a receipt looks wrong.
Initialization and persistent modes
The ESC @ initialize command is commonly used to return the printer to a known state. Inspect whether it appears at the start of each job and whether your application relies on state left by a previous job. Formatting commands such as ESC ! (print mode), ESC E (emphasis) and ESC - (underline) can persist until changed, so a missing reset may make later lines bold or underlined.
Feeds, cuts and status requests
ESC d prints and feeds a specified number of lines. A feed that is too large can leave an unexpected blank area before a cut; a feed that is too small can place the cut through the last line on some mechanisms. DLE EOT is a real-time status request, but support varies by printer family. An emulator may display, ignore or warn about status traffic rather than reproducing a physical mechanism’s response.

Binary payload boundaries
Raster images, barcodes and QR codes carry dimensions and data lengths. A decoded-command panel can reveal a wrong width, truncated payload or a parameter interpreted under the wrong code page. If the preview stops after an image, inspect the bytes immediately before and after that payload rather than assuming the text renderer is at fault.

Paper width, profiles and character encoding
Paper width is more than a cosmetic setting. A 58 mm roll generally offers fewer printable dots than an 80 mm roll, so a column layout that fits one width can wrap or collide on the other. Select the width that matches the intended hardware and validate the narrowest model you support.
Profiles may include printable-dot limits, image-size limits, code pages, cut and feed capabilities, and model-specific command behavior. Choose a profile that is close to the target printer rather than a generic “full support” option. If the exact model is unavailable, treat the preview as a geometry and command sanity check, not a certification.
Encoding errors often look like spacing or alignment defects. Confirm the code page selected by the receipt data and by the profile, then test accented characters, currency symbols and non-Latin text. A preview that substitutes a glyph can still have correct column widths, while the physical device may print a different symbol or a blank square.

Common failures and how to isolate them
The receipt is blank
- Check that the emulator received bytes rather than an empty job.
- Look for a transport mismatch: the POS application may be sending through a driver or spooler instead of RAW TCP.
- Inspect the first commands for an unsupported encoding or a malformed length field.
Text is shifted or wraps unexpectedly
- Verify the selected 58 mm or 80 mm width and the profile’s printable-dot count.
- Check that alignment, character-size and print-mode commands are reset before each section.
- Measure columns in printer dots or character cells rather than CSS pixels or screen percentages.
Images, QR codes or barcodes differ from expectations
- Confirm that the emulator lists support for the specific raster, QR or barcode command variant your application emits.
- Check image dimensions and payload length in the decoded view.
- Test the error-correction, module-size or barcode-width parameters within the target profile’s limits.
The emulator warns about an unsupported command
Read the target printer’s command reference before replacing the command. Epson’s references and Pyramid’s command table both show that support differs among printer families. You may need a fallback sequence, a profile change or a hardware check; do not silently remove the command if it controls a safety-critical or customer-visible operation.

The preview looks right but the printer does not
Check firmware, cutter and sensor behavior, code-page selection, paper loading and the exact model profile. Emulators can render command intent but cannot reproduce every mechanical tolerance, paper surface, timing issue or status response. Preserve the captured job so the physical result can be compared byte-for-byte.
What an emulator cannot prove
A successful preview establishes that the tool understood the received stream under its selected profile. It does not prove complete hardware equivalence. Printer families can differ in command support, raster limits, code pages, printable area, cut behavior and real-time status handling. Even a profile-based emulator may implement only a subset of a model’s firmware behavior.
For most layout work, a physical printer is optional. Keep one final hardware check when you depend on a particular cutter, drawer pulse, paper sensor, status response, unusual character set, high-density image or firmware-specific command. Make that check a release gate for hardware-sensitive features rather than a requirement for every column adjustment.
A practical regression strategy
- Save representative raw jobs for narrow and wide paper, long names, multilingual text, discounts, taxes, refunds, images and codes.
- Render those fixtures after every change and compare image dimensions, line wrapping and command warnings.
- Keep a second assertion on the decoded stream: required initialization, code-page selection, totals, feed and cut operations must be present in the expected order.
- Run the same fixtures against each supported printer profile. A receipt that passes on 80 mm may fail on 58 mm even when the command stream is unchanged.
- Perform a physical spot check only for features whose behavior depends on the target mechanism or firmware.
This approach turns “move a column, print, squint at 58 mm of paper” into a repeatable software test. As Cyrille Sepele puts it, “Stop printing a test receipt every time you move a column.”
Quick Recap
Choosing the right workflow
- Use offline rendering when your application can export command bytes, you want automated image tests, or you are debugging a payload without running the whole POS stack.
- Use a virtual TCP printer when you need to observe the exact job generated by an existing POS application or printer integration.
- Use raw and decoded inspection when the visual symptom could come from a persistent mode, malformed binary payload, unsupported command or wrong code page.
- Use a real printer selectively when mechanical, firmware or model-specific behavior is part of the requirement.
