Consider Biome if your JavaScript or TypeScript project would benefit from one toolchain for formatting, linting, and code assists. Neither is the universal winner: check your actual files, lint rules, editor setup, and CI workflow before switching.
Prettier and Biome have different scopes
Prettier is an opinionated formatter. Its documentation describes a tool that reprints code to produce consistent output, taking line length into account. It is designed to make formatting decisions rather than act as a general-purpose linter. Prettier documentation
Biome is a broader web-development toolchain: its documentation covers a formatter, linter, and assist features. That integration can simplify a project’s tools, but it also means a move to Biome may affect linting and editor behavior—not just formatting. Biome formatter documentation Biome linter documentation
| Decision point | Prettier | Biome |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Opinionated formatter. Prettier documentation | Formatter, linter, and assist toolchain. Biome formatter documentation Biome linter documentation |
| Documented format coverage | JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX, Angular, Vue, Flow, CSS-family formats, HTML, JSON, GraphQL, Markdown, YAML, LWC, MJML, and more. Prettier documentation | Its home page highlights JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX/TSX, JSON, HTML, CSS, and GraphQL. Biome home page |
| Linting | The cited documentation establishes its formatting role; it does not establish Prettier as an ESLint replacement. Prettier documentation | Includes documented lint rules, fix behavior, and an ESLint migration path. Biome linter documentation |

Check file coverage before choosing
Do not compare tools by the JavaScript files alone if your repository also formats templates, stylesheets, documentation, or data files. Prettier’s documented list extends across many of those formats. Biome’s home page highlights a narrower set of web languages and file types. That does not, by itself, establish that every file type outside the list is unsupported; it does mean you should verify coverage against the current documentation and your repository’s extensions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- List the file extensions and framework templates that are actually checked into the project.
- Confirm that the candidate tool can format each relevant type, including files handled by editor integrations or CI.
- For files both tools handle, compare their output on representative examples rather than assuming compatibility means identical formatting.
Formatting compatibility and speed claims need context
Compatibility is not a promise of identical output
Biome’s home page reports 97% compatibility with Prettier and links to known limitations. The figure is Biome’s own summary, reviewed in 2026, rather than an independent compatibility study. Treat it as a reason to evaluate Biome—not as proof that a repository can switch without visible formatting changes. Biome home page
The speed result is a vendor benchmark
Biome reports that it was approximately 35x faster in a benchmark using 171,127 lines across 2,104 files on an Intel Core i7-1270P. This is a Biome-reported test result, not a general comparison for every repository or computer. The displayed runtimes are rounded to 0.00s, so they do not support inferring absolute runtimes. The cited Prettier documentation does not provide a comparable benchmark. If runtime matters to your team, measure both tools on your own repository and setup. Biome home page Prettier documentation

Biome may consolidate linting, but audit ESLint first
Biome documents lint rules, recommended rule groups, safe and unsafe fixes, and commands for migrating ESLint configuration. Its guide also describes porting configuration and suppressing findings during migration. Those steps make migration possible, but they do not establish that Biome reproduces every ESLint plugin, project-specific rule, or typed-linting behavior a repository relies on. Biome linter documentation
- Inventory the ESLint plugins, rules, overrides, and type-aware checks currently used in your project.
- Try Biome’s documented migration workflow against the configuration, then inspect what was converted and what findings or suppressions were added. Biome linter documentation
- Keep any checks that the new configuration does not replace, and confirm CI still enforces the intended rules.
Biome’s home page lists 561 linter rules, but a rule count does not demonstrate parity with a project’s existing ESLint setup; counts can also change over time. Biome home page

Keep editor and CI behavior consistent
Both tools fit into editor workflows, but consistent results depend on project-level setup. Prettier recommends installing it locally in the project and documents integrations for multiple editors. Prettier editor documentation Biome recommends a project configuration file so CLI and editor behavior use shared settings; its configuration guide covers formatter, linter, and assist options. Biome configuration guide
- Install and pin the tool version in the project rather than relying only on a developer’s global installation.
- Commit the relevant configuration and ensure editor integrations use it.
- Run formatting and lint checks in CI so the repository’s expected output is reproducible.
- Avoid running multiple formatters on the same files unless the order and ownership of formatting are deliberate.
How to decide for your repository
Stay with or choose Prettier when
- You depend on its documented coverage for formats beyond the narrower set highlighted on Biome’s home page.
- Your existing Prettier workflow is stable and there is no concrete need to consolidate tools.
- You want a formatter-focused choice and will keep linting decisions separate.
Consider Biome when
- Your repository’s file types fit its documented coverage.
- You want formatting and linting, and possibly assist features, in one toolchain.
- Your team is willing to verify formatter differences and review any ESLint migration rather than assume automatic parity.
For an existing Prettier project
- Check Biome’s current known limitations and support for every relevant file type. Biome home page
- Run the candidate formatter on representative files and inspect the diff, including framework templates and edge cases in your repository.
- Verify editor behavior, project configuration, and CI before making the new tool the default. Biome configuration guide
Do not switch solely on the 97% compatibility or approximately 35x benchmark figures; each is a Biome-reported summary with limits on what it establishes.
