On supported VIZIO Smart TVs, the Star button opens the Quick Menu. What it does can depend on the screen you’re using: in WatchFree+, VIZIO says Star opens the full guide with its category menu already open. Older remotes may have different controls, so the exact behavior depends on your TV and remote model.
What the Star button does on a supported VIZIO Smart TV
VIZIO’s May 9, 2024 Quick Menu announcement says you can press Star to launch Quick Menu. It also says holding the OK button opens the same menu. Quick Menu is therefore the button’s general shortcut on supported Smart TVs, rather than a universal command that means the same thing in every app or screen.
What Star does in WatchFree+
In WatchFree+, pressing Star opens the full WatchFree+ Guide with the category menu open, according to VIZIO’s June 20, 2024 announcement. This is a useful example of why the button’s action depends on the interface currently on screen: the same control can bring up a context-specific guide instead of the general Quick Menu.
Why your remote may behave differently
VIZIO has made remotes with different button layouts and features. For example, its 2017 SmartCast announcement describes a V-button for the SmartCast interface and dedicated app shortcut buttons. A remote from another generation may not have the Star button or may behave differently from a newer Smart TV remote.

To confirm what a button does on your setup, look up the manual for the exact TV and remote model. The model number is typically printed on the remote or its rear label; use that model when searching VIZIO’s support materials rather than relying on instructions for a remote that merely looks similar.

If the Star button does not work
- Check what is on screen. Test the button from the TV interface and, if you use it, from WatchFree+; the expected menu differs by context.
- Check the remote model. Older layouts may not include Star or the same shortcuts. Consult the model-specific manual.
- Consider a compatible replacement if the remote is lost or damaged. VIZIO lists remote models including the XRT140C and XRT140R, but compatibility varies. Verify that a replacement works with your exact TV model before buying.
