Before a trip, make a few deliberate checks in your Galaxy Camera app: turn on framing guides if they help, decide whether photos should carry location tags, confirm the file format and video controls you want, and check that the camera will reopen in a useful mode. The right choices depend on your phone and software version, so try them at home rather than relying on a change for the first time while traveling.
Which settings should you check first?
Use this short checklist, then adjust only the options that fit how you shoot and share. Samsung notes that camera options vary by phone model and software version, so a label or control in this guide may not appear on your device.
- Set up a viewfinder guide if you want help with framing.
- Choose whether new photos and videos should include location data.
- Keep your current file format unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Check low-light and video controls available on your model.
- Review settings that retain your last mode or filter.
- Choose a shutter method that suits group or hands-free photos.
Turn on a composition guide if it helps you frame shots
Composition guides add lines to the camera viewfinder to help with framing and alignment. Samsung’s instructions, updated September 30, 2026, give this path on supported devices: Camera > Quick controls > Settings > Composition guide. On devices below One UI 7, Samsung gives the path as Camera > Settings > Grid lines > On. Samsung’s composition-guide instructions note that menus can differ by model and software version.

This is an easy setting to test: take a few ordinary photos with the overlay on, and leave it enabled only if you find the lines useful.

Decide whether Scene optimizer suits your photos
On supported phones, Scene optimizer uses what the rear camera detects to adjust a photo. Samsung’s Z Flip6 guide describes adjustments to exposure, contrast and white balance; its Z Flip7 guide describes optimizing color and contrast. The feature’s availability and behavior depend on the model.
It is a preference, not a guaranteed improvement. If the setting appears on your phone, compare a few everyday scenes with it on and off before your trip, then choose the result you prefer. See Samsung’s guides for the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Galaxy Z Flip7 and Flip7 FE.

Choose a file format that fits your sharing and editing habits
Format options vary across Galaxy models. Samsung documents HEIF and RAW for the Z Flip6, and HEIF, RAW or JPEG for the Z Flip7 and Flip7 FE. Do not assume those are the choices on every Galaxy phone.
- For routine travel photos: keep the format you already use if it works with your sharing and backup workflow.
- For deliberate editing: RAW may suit a workflow in which you plan to process images yourself. Before switching, check that the apps and services you intend to use accept the format.
Samsung’s model-specific format information is in its Z Flip6 camera guide and Z Flip7 and Flip7 FE camera guide.

Make a deliberate choice about location tags
Location tags attach GPS information to photos and videos. Keep them on if you want location-based organization; turn them off if you do not want place data attached to new captures.
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual warns: “Your location may appear on your pictures when you upload them to the internet. To avoid this, turn off the location tag setting.” That warning appears in the Galaxy S23 series user manual. Turning off the camera setting is a choice for future captures; it does not remove location data already embedded in existing files.

Check Night mode and video controls before shooting in dim light
Keep Night mode shots steady
Samsung identifies Night mode as a mode for low-light photos. Its UK support guidance says, “For the best results, your phone should be kept as steady as possible while taking a night mode shot,” and adds, “If possible, use a tripod to get the perfect picture.” A tripod is optional, not a requirement; a compact smartphone tripod is one possible way to keep the phone steady when you want hands-free support. Check that any mount fits your phone before relying on it.

Choose video behavior for the scene
Samsung describes Auto FPS on the Z Flip7 and Flip7 FE as optimizing frame rate to record brighter videos in low light. The same guide describes video stabilization as an anti-shake feature for moving footage. These controls affect different preferences: Auto FPS targets low-light recording, while stabilization addresses shake. A setting that suits dim scenes or movement may not suit every clip, so check what your model offers and try it before traveling. Samsung’s Z Flip7 and Flip7 FE guide describes these options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check what the camera remembers between sessions
On supported devices, Settings to keep can preserve choices such as the last shooting mode, selfie angle or filters. Review it so the camera does not reopen in an unexpected mode or with a filter you did not intend to use. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual also describes this setting as retaining the last setting, such as shooting mode. The available choices depend on your phone; consult the Galaxy S23 series manual or your device’s camera settings for the labels on your model.
Pick a shutter method for group and hands-free photos
Some Galaxy phones offer alternatives to tapping the on-screen shutter, such as volume-button capture, voice commands, a floating shutter button or Show palm. These can help when framing a group photo or placing the phone away from your hand, but availability varies by model. Open Camera > Settings > Shooting methods and choose from the options shown on your device. Samsung lists examples and model caveats in its camera modes and settings guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo a quick trial before you leave
After changing anything, take a few test photos and a short video in conditions similar to the ones you expect on the trip. Confirm the framing overlay is comfortable, the chosen format works with your usual workflow, location tagging matches your privacy preference, and the camera opens with the settings you expect. That small check helps you avoid discovering an unwanted mode or control when you need a quick shot.
