You can use a browser to listen to locally selected tracks and prepare set information without uploading the audio—but browser-based processing alone does not prove that a website sends no data. A privacy-first workflow makes the distinction explicit: choose files yourself, check what the tool stores or transmits, save a portable plan, and finish player-specific library and USB preparation in your DJ software.
What “private in the browser” does—and does not—mean
The Web Audio API gives browsers tools to load and work with audio. MDN describes media elements as a common approach for full-length tracks and notes that an audio context should be started in response to a user gesture. That establishes browser capability, not the data practices of a particular site. MDN’s Web Audio API best practices explain the browser-side considerations.
Keep two questions separate: where the audio is processed, and what else the page communicates over the network. A tool may process chosen audio on your device yet still make ordinary requests for fonts, libraries, analytics, crash reports, catalog searches, cloud analysis, or account synchronization. Ask whether audio bytes, filenames, search terms, analysis results, or feature events leave the device. “Client-side” by itself does not answer those questions.

The Web Audio API 1.1 Working Draft dated September 22, 2026 discusses privacy considerations around analyzing ambient or distinctive audio. A file picker is not the same as microphone capture.

Choose a browser tool by its data flows
Before selecting tracks, look for clear answers to these questions. If a tool does not explain an important data flow or how to remove saved data, treat that as unknown rather than assuming it is private.
- Audio: Are the files processed on the device, or uploaded for analysis?
- Metadata: Are filenames, BPM, key, cues, or other analysis results sent to a server?
- Other requests: Does the page use analytics, remote libraries, catalog search, crash reporting, or cloud services?
- Accounts and sync: Is sign-in optional, and does it synchronize a library or set data?
- Saved state: What persists in browser storage, where can you clear it, and could another person using the same device profile access it?
- Handoff: Can the plan move into your usual library software, and can you verify it on the target player?
As one example—not an independent security audit—the maintainers of Deckwave describe a workflow that reads user-chosen files locally, analyzes them, discards the audio, and saves the mix as a score. This illustrates a useful design pattern: prepare and preserve a compact plan instead of rendering a mix. Its privacy statements are the project maintainers’ claims; they do not establish what other sites do.

Build a local-first preparation loop
1. Select only the tracks you intend to prepare
Use a file picker or another clearly user-initiated method to choose local tracks. This is different from searching a remote catalog, importing a cloud library, or signing in to synchronize a collection. If the page requests microphone access during a file-only task, pause and check why it needs it before granting permission.
2. Listen and analyze on the device
Use the browser tool to audition tracks and inspect the preparation data it offers, such as file metadata, BPM, key, waveform, or cue suggestions. Confirm in the tool’s privacy information which calculations happen locally and which, if any, require a server. Web Audio can support audio work, but it does not reproduce every capability of advanced desktop audio software; the Web Audio specification notes that some such capabilities are difficult or impossible to replicate in the API.

Check what the tool saves, where it saves it, and how to clear it. Browser storage may retain settings or set data and may be accessible to someone else who can use the same device profile. Do not assume that a browser will keep access to a chosen folder or file handle across visits: support and persistence behavior depend on the browser, and the sources cited here do not establish cross-browser behavior.
3. Minimize what leaves the device
Prefer a tool that does not collect track contents or filenames on a server, and determine separately whether analytics or other services receive filenames, queries, analysis metadata, or feature events. Local audio processing is only one part of the privacy picture; account sync, external searches, and telemetry are separate data flows.

4. Save a portable plan
Export a playlist, cue sheet, or compact set score if the browser tool offers one. A score can preserve planning decisions without replacing the complete audio files or the player-specific library. Check the export format and contents before relying on it: a plan is useful only if your regular DJ software can accept it or you can recreate the set from it.
5. Import into your performance library and verify
Use your established DJ library software for analysis or export features that depend on a particular player. In its English-language rekordbox ver. 7.2.14 manual, AlphaTheta describes adding computer tracks to a Collection and viewing waveform, artwork, BPM, and key analysis. The manual also states: “You can load tracks and playlists from [Collection] to USB storage devices (flash memory or hard disk). Connect the USB storage device to a DJ player for your DJ performance.” Follow the manual for your software version, then confirm that the intended player sees the expected library before performance.

6. Back up before the event
Keep the original music library and make a separate copy or export for an important event. Do not format a drive until you have checked the target equipment’s requirements and copied off any data you need.

A playlist or USB drive that works with one setup is not automatically compatible with another. AlphaTheta says certain players require OneLibrary, and supported USB file systems depend on the target equipment. Check the current OneLibrary support FAQ and the rekordbox support and manuals for the exact player and software version. If you use a different DJ platform or player, check its own documentation rather than treating the rekordbox procedure as universal.
When exporting, the relevant question is not simply whether the storage device is a USB flash drive: the player’s supported file system and library requirements determine whether it will work. Do not reformat a drive to meet a requirement until you have checked the player documentation and backed up anything already on it.

A browser can help you audition music, inspect and calculate preparation data, and organize a set. It may not replace the full library-management and export workflow needed for a particular player. Browser support, persistence, analysis features, and hardware compatibility vary, so the reliable division of work is to use the browser for the preparation it supports, then use the target setup’s documented library and export path and verify the result on the equipment.
