Before handing over an old phone, protect four areas in this order: your personal data and accounts, the SIM or eSIM, device locks and connected services, and any physical extras required by the receiving program. Back up and verify the transfer first. Only then sign out, erase the phone with its built-in reset tool, remove cellular service, and check that the next owner will not encounter an account lock.
The safe handoff sequence
Do not start by deleting photos, contacts, messages, or files one at a time. If the phone is still signed in to a cloud account, manual deletion can synchronize those deletions to your other devices. The safer sequence is:
- Back up and transfer. Move photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, files, and other information to your replacement phone or an encrypted computer backup.
- Verify the copy. Open representative photos, contacts, messages, documents, and important apps on the new device. Check that your password manager, authenticator, and payment information are available before continuing.
- Disconnect accounts and services. Sign out where required, remove the old phone from trusted-device lists, and handle services such as Apple Watch, Apple Pay, and iMessage.
- Erase the phone using its built-in flow. A factory-erase process is designed to remove your content and account data together. Do not substitute a collection of manual deletions.
- Handle cellular service and packing. Remove a physical SIM, coordinate an eSIM with your carrier, and follow the exact instructions of the trade-in, recycling, buyer, or recipient.
Keep the old phone powered on and connected to Wi-Fi until the transfer and account checks are complete. Once the erase starts, data recovery and troubleshooting become much harder.

Back up everything you cannot replace
Use the backup and transfer tools for your platform before erasing. Include camera photos and videos, contacts, calendars, messages, notes, downloaded documents, call history, device settings, and app data that does not automatically restore. Pay special attention to two-factor-authentication apps, passkeys, password managers, transit passes, and locally stored files. Some apps require their own export or transfer procedure; being signed in on the new phone is not proof that every local item has moved.

- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Apple advises creating a backup and transferring information before removing personal information from an iPhone. If you use iCloud, do not manually delete synced photos or contacts while still signed in just to “clean” the old phone. Those deletions can propagate to iCloud and other connected devices. Let the built-in erase process remove the old phone’s local copy instead.
Verify the transfer on the replacement phone
- Search for several old and recent contacts, including one with a custom note or address.
- Open photos and videos from different dates and confirm that cloud thumbnails are available offline when you need them.
- Send or receive a test message if your messaging history matters.
- Open your password manager and authenticator, and confirm that you can generate a code or use a passkey without the old phone.
- Check banking, travel, health, work, and government apps for sign-in or device-registration prompts.
- Confirm that files in Downloads, local document folders, voice memos, and note-taking apps are present.
If any check fails, stop. Repeat the transfer or make a separate backup while the old phone is still available.
Sign out before erasing
On a current iPhone, Apple’s instructions place account sign-out in Settings, under your name, with Sign Out. The exact labels and prompts depend on the iOS version, so use Apple’s current instructions for the version installed on the phone rather than assuming an older menu path. You may be asked for the Apple Account password to turn off Find My and remove the account association.
For Android, there is no single settings path that applies to every manufacturer or software version. Use the phone maker’s current support steps to remove the Google account and any manufacturer account, then run that model’s factory-reset flow. For an Android phone being sent to Apple for trade-in, Apple specifically says to back up, sign out of the account, and erase the device; failing to sign out can affect trade-in eligibility.
Run the built-in erase flow
On an iPhone using current iOS, the usual route is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Read each confirmation screen. The process may ask about an eSIM separately; do not skip that decision if the phone is being sold. Older iOS releases can use different wording, so follow the current on-screen flow for that device.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
On Android, open the manufacturer’s support documentation for the exact model and software version before starting. Menu names commonly differ between brands and even between major Android releases. The important outcome is a complete factory reset after the accounts have been removed, not a particular menu label.
When Find My is enabled, Apple says erasing an iPhone turns off Activation Lock, preparing it for a new owner. After the erase, the phone should display the initial setup screen rather than your name, apps, messages, or home screen. Do not proceed with handoff if it still asks for your Apple Account or Google account during setup; that indicates an account tie remains.

2. SIM card and eSIM service
Remove a physical SIM
A physical SIM identifies the cellular line to the network. Before mailing or giving away the phone, power it down and remove the SIM tray card. Keep it for the replacement phone, destroy it securely if the carrier has already replaced it, or follow the carrier’s return instructions. A small SIM-ejector tool is optional; many phones include one, and a straightened paper clip may fit only if the manufacturer permits it. Never force the tray or insert a sharp object into a microphone hole.
Removing the card does not erase the phone, and erasing the phone does not remove a card that remains in the tray. Perform both tasks.
Handle an eSIM with the carrier
An eSIM is a digital carrier profile, so there is no card to pull out. Contact your wireless provider about transferring, suspending, or replacing the service before you erase the old phone. Make sure the line is working on the replacement device.

Apple’s support guidance states: “If you sell a device that uses eSIM, choose the option to erase the device and the eSIM profile when asked whether to erase the device and the eSIM profile.” Select that option when the iPhone’s erase flow presents it for a sale or handoff. Carrier rules can differ, and erasing a profile may require a new activation on the next phone, so complete the carrier transfer first.
Afterward, check that the old phone no longer shows your line, bars, or carrier account during setup. Do not leave an active eSIM behind for convenience; the recipient should activate their own service.
3. Device locks and connected services
Clear ownership and trusted-device ties
An erased phone can still be unusable if an ownership lock remains. On an iPhone, turning off Find My as part of account sign-out and erase removes Activation Lock. Remove the old phone from your Apple Account’s device list and trusted-device list if it remains after the erase. On Android, remove the phone from your Google Account and any manufacturer account according to the maker’s current instructions. These checks matter especially when the phone is sold remotely, because the recipient cannot complete setup while your credentials are required.
Unpair an Apple Watch
If an Apple Watch is paired to the old iPhone, unpair it before erasing the phone. Unpairing creates a current watch backup and removes the pairing and Activation Lock relationship in the proper order. If you have already erased the phone, use the Watch app on another Apple device or Apple’s account-recovery instructions to remove the old pairing before giving the phone away.
Remove Apple Pay cards and passes
Remove payment cards, transit cards, tickets, and passes from the old iPhone when prompted during sign-out or from the Wallet settings. This is separate from deleting a banking app: a card token in Apple Pay is its own device credential. The cards remain available for reactivation on your replacement phone after the issuer verifies you.

Deregister iMessage when moving to a non-Apple phone
If your new phone is not an iPhone, turn off iMessage and deregister your phone number so new messages are delivered as standard text messages. Otherwise, people who message you from Apple devices may continue addressing iMessage to the old registration. If the old iPhone is already gone, use Apple’s online iMessage deregistration process or contact your carrier for help. This step is relevant when changing platforms; it is not necessary merely because you are replacing one iPhone with another.
Review other connected devices
Check account security pages for smart-home hubs, Bluetooth accessories, vehicle systems, work-management tools, and streaming services that list trusted or authorized devices. Revoke the old phone where the service offers that control. This is not a replacement for the factory erase, but it prevents the old handset from remaining an approved sign-in or control device.
4. Physical extras and handoff requirements
Follow the recipient’s instructions, not a generic checklist
A direct gift, private sale, recycling drop-off, carrier return, and mail-in trade-in can have different requirements. Ask the recipient what they expect before packing. Some programs want only the phone; others require a charging cable, original packaging, or a return label. Photograph the phone’s condition and serial or IMEI information for your records, but do not publish those identifiers publicly.
Apple mail-in trade-in packing
Apple’s trade-in instructions say to remove the SIM and not include items such as a case, power adapter, or cables when using its trade-in kit, because those accessories will not be returned. That direction applies to that specific mail-in trade-in process; it is not a universal rule for every buyer or recycler. Keep accessories you plan to reuse unless the receiving program explicitly requests them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepare the phone itself
- Remove the case, screen protector you want to keep, SIM card, memory card, and any adhesive mount.
- Clean the exterior with a manufacturer-approved method; keep liquid away from ports.
- Record the device model and condition before shipping or handing it over.
- Pack it according to the program’s instructions, using the supplied materials when required.
iPhone and Android: what changes
| Task | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Backup and transfer | Use Apple’s backup and transfer tools, then verify important content on the replacement device. | Use the phone maker’s and Google’s current transfer tools; app-specific data may require a separate export. |
| Account sign-out | Sign out of the Apple Account and turn off Find My as part of the handoff flow. | Remove Google and manufacturer accounts using instructions for the exact model and software version. |
| Erase | Current path: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. | Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version; consult the maker’s current support page. |
| eSIM | Coordinate the carrier transfer and choose to erase the eSIM profile when the erase flow asks. | Carrier and manufacturer steps vary; confirm the line works on the replacement device before deleting the profile. |
| Trade-in to Apple | Use Apple’s iPhone preparation instructions. | Apple’s supported general sequence is back up, sign out, and erase; exact menu paths come from the Android maker. |
Final readiness check before handoff
- The replacement phone contains and opens your important data.
- The old phone shows the initial setup screen, not your account or home screen.
- Your Apple Account, Google account, and manufacturer account no longer list the phone as an active or trusted device.
- Find My or the equivalent device-finding service is disabled, so an ownership lock will not block setup.
- A physical SIM and memory card are out; eSIM service is transferred or suspended.
- Apple Watch pairing, Apple Pay cards and passes, and iMessage registration have been handled when applicable.
- The receiving program’s packing and accessory rules are satisfied.
If something went wrong
The recipient sees an Activation Lock or account prompt
Do not send credentials to the recipient. Sign in to your account from a trusted device or the account website, remove the old phone from the device list, and confirm that Find My or the equivalent service is off. If the phone was already shipped, contact the recipient and complete the removal before they continue setup.

You erased the phone before verifying a transfer
Stop the handoff and check every available backup: cloud backup, computer backup, a previous phone, and app-specific export files. Some services can restore data after you sign in; locally stored items that were never backed up may not be recoverable. Contact the app provider or carrier promptly for account-recovery options.
Your number stopped working after eSIM removal
Use the carrier’s activation process on the replacement phone or request a replacement eSIM. Keep the old device available only if the carrier asks for an on-device confirmation; do not reactivate service on a phone you have already handed over.
Messages still arrive through iMessage
Deregister the phone number with Apple, then ask a contact to send a test message. If delivery still fails, ask the carrier to verify SMS routing and confirm that iMessage is disabled on every Apple device still associated with the number.
When the phone is ready to leave your hands
The handoff is complete when your data is backed up and verified, accounts and trusted-device ties are removed, the built-in erase has finished, cellular credentials are no longer on the phone, and the recipient’s program requirements are met. Only then should you ship, sell, donate, or give away the device.
