To prepare a server for HestiaCP, use your hosting provider’s rebuild or reinstall process to install a fresh, supported 64-bit operating system. The operation can erase the server’s data, so first make backups outside the system being wiped and confirm how you would restore them. Once the new OS is ready, connect as root and follow HestiaCP’s current installation guide.

What reimaging does—and why HestiaCP needs it

Reimaging replaces the server’s operating system with a fresh installation. It is not the same as reinstalling HestiaCP over an existing, configured system. HestiaCP’s Getting Started documentation says it must be installed on a fresh OS installation to ensure proper functionality.

The rebuild is destructive: depending on the provider and operation, it may erase files and reset server configuration. The exact effects on IP addresses, attached storage, firewalls, and other settings vary. If you cannot tolerate that uncertainty, consider creating a replacement server and migrating to it rather than wiping the existing one.

Check that the server meets HestiaCP’s requirements

HestiaCP’s requirements page, accessed 7 October 2026, lists these resources and supported operating systems. These are HestiaCP-published requirements, not independent performance benchmarks.

Supported architecture 64-bit AMD64/x86_64 or ARM64/aarch64

HestiaCP says it does not support non-LTS operating systems. OS support can change, so check the current requirements before selecting an image. Confirm that your provider offers the exact supported release and architecture; a similarly named image is not necessarily the same release.

Back up what you need before wiping the server

Make an inventory before you start. Depending on what the server hosts, that may include domains, HestiaCP users, mailboxes, databases, DNS zones, certificates, scheduled jobs, custom configuration, and attached storage. Note which items must be restored and which can be recreated.

A HestiaCP account archive and a provider snapshot are different recovery layers. HestiaCP documents creating an account backup with v-backup-user username, then restoring it with v-restore-user username backup-file.tar. The restore process accepts backups created by HestiaCP and VestaCP. See the HestiaCP backup and restore guide for the current procedure and file handling.

  • High-capacity add-on storage.Specific uses: Business, personal
  • Fast data transfers

Keep a backup copy somewhere the OS rebuild will not erase, such as a separate destination. HestiaCP documents remote backup protocols including FTP, SFTP, and Rclone. A snapshot may provide another recovery route, but read your provider’s rules for retention and restoration; the existence of a snapshot does not establish that an application-level restore has been tested.

  • Check that the backup completed and that the files are accessible outside the server’s root disk.
  • Understand the steps and destination needed to restore it.
  • Do not proceed on the assumption that a backup job or snapshot exists unless you can locate it and know how it can be recovered.

Check your provider’s rebuild procedure

Use documentation for the actual provider and server product. Before confirming, establish what the specific operation does to the root disk, IP address, hostname, attached volumes, firewall or network settings, and provider backups or snapshots. Also confirm that you can reach the server through SSH or the provider’s console after the rebuild.

Provider instructions are not interchangeable. For example, Vultr’s Cloud Compute reinstallation guide says reinstalling wipes the file system and resets configurations. It gives this product-specific path: Products → Compute → instance → Server Reinstall, followed by confirmation.

DigitalOcean’s Droplet rebuild guide warns that data without a backup, snapshot, or local copy is irretrievable. It says a rebuild retains the Droplet IP; destroying and recreating a Droplet can release it. That IP behavior is specific to the documented DigitalOcean operation, not a promise about other providers.

Reimage the server with a supported fresh OS

  1. Open the provider’s instructions for your exact instance type. Locate its rebuild, reinstall, or reimage flow. Button names and image choices vary by provider.
  2. Select a fresh supported image. Choose a Debian or Ubuntu release and 64-bit architecture listed in HestiaCP’s current requirements. Check the provider’s image details rather than relying only on a family label.
  3. Verify the target and consequences. Confirm that you have selected the intended server and read the final confirmation dialog. Do not assume attached volumes, IP addresses, or other settings will be preserved unless the provider says so for this operation.
  4. Submit only after your recovery checks pass. Confirm the provider’s destructive action. Wait for the provider to report that the OS is ready; there is no universal rebuild duration established here.

Connect as root and install HestiaCP

After the provider reports that the new system is ready, connect through its console or SSH and obtain root access. HestiaCP’s standard installation flow requires root. Its documentation describes downloading hst-install.sh from the HestiaCP release repository and running bash hst-install.sh; consult the live installation instructions for the current command, options, and prerequisites before running it.

If you cannot connect, use the provider’s console and recovery instructions rather than repeatedly trying an old SSH key or assuming the prior OS configuration survived. The rebuild may have changed system access details, and the provider determines how console access and credentials work.

Restore and verify the services you need

Use HestiaCP’s documented restore process for account archives, then check the services and site-specific configuration your server depends on. The backup guide provides restore commands but does not define one universal validation checklist for every installation. Tailor checks to the inventory you made: for example, confirm the relevant sites, mailboxes, databases, DNS, certificates, and scheduled tasks are present and working.

Rebuild the instance or migrate to a replacement?

Rebuilding keeps the existing instance as the target but destroys data covered by the provider’s operation. Creating a replacement avoids wiping the current server immediately, but requires transferring data and verifying the new environment. There is no universal downtime estimate: it depends on the provider, workload, backup size, and migration path.

Decision factor Rebuild existing instance Create a replacement
Data recovery Restore from backups or snapshots that remain available after the rebuild; verify their location and restore process. Transfer from the existing server or restore a backup; the old instance can remain available during preparation.
IP and instance identity Provider-specific. DigitalOcean states that a Droplet rebuild retains its IP; verify the behavior for your own operation. New instance identity and network details may require configuration changes; check the provider’s terms.
OS compatibility Select a fresh image currently supported by HestiaCP. Select a supported image on the replacement and confirm its architecture.
Downtime and effort Depends on rebuild, installation, and restore time; no universal duration is established. Requires migration and validation; no universal duration is established.
