For many newcomers, prepaid is the simplest first step: you pay before using service, so a missed payment cannot create a surprise monthly bill while you are arranging housing, banking and work. Postpaid may be better if you need a specific carrier offer, monthly billing or a financed phone, but the provider may verify your identity, address, credit information or deposit eligibility. There is no Canada-wide rule that newcomers must use prepaid or that every prepaid plan skips a credit check.

The practical choice depends on four things: how you want to pay, whether you already have a compatible unlocked phone, the network coverage you need and the provider’s current eligibility terms. The comparison below uses Canadian rules and provider information available in 2026; prices, data allowances and promotions can change.

What “prepaid” and “postpaid” mean

Prepaid: fund service before you use it

With prepaid, you add money or purchase a service period in advance. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) describes it as: “You pay for the services you’re planning on using.” Your balance or term then covers the included talk, text and data. If the term ends or the balance runs out, service can be suspended until you top up. Read the CRTC’s explanation of postpaid versus prepaid services before activation.

Prepaid is not synonymous with “no verification.” Each carrier sets its own activation, identification, address and payment rules. Ask what documents are required before travelling to a store or submitting an online order.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Postpaid: receive a bill after the billing period

Postpaid service bills you after you have used the service during a billing cycle. The invoice can include the plan charge, taxes, device payments, add-ons, roaming and other permitted fees. A provider may assess an application, verify identity and address, request a deposit or limit device-financing choices. Those decisions are provider-specific, so a newcomer without Canadian credit should ask about available options rather than assuming automatic approval or rejection.

Wireless Code protections

The CRTC Wireless Code applies to all wireless services, but every section applies to postpaid service while only specified sections apply to prepaid. Postpaid protections include limits and notifications related to data overage and roaming charges. Prepaid customers have protections concerning prepaid balances and other listed provisions. The simplified Wireless Code explains which rules apply to each arrangement.

For a prepaid commitment period, the Code requires at least seven calendar days after expiry for you to top up and retain the remaining balance. Check the carrier’s own expiry and renewal wording as well, because the timing of an individual top-up can differ from another plan.

Which option fits a newcomer’s situation?

Decision point Prepaid Postpaid Question to ask yourself
Payment timing Pay before planned use by topping up or buying a term. Receive a bill after using service. Will advance payment or a monthly invoice fit your first months of Canadian income and banking?
Spending control Use normally until the balance or term ends; service may stop rather than continue accumulating usage charges. Charges accumulate on the account during the billing cycle. What are the data, roaming and overage controls?
Eligibility Requirements vary by carrier; there is no universal no-check rule. Application or verification requirements vary; deposits and credit review may apply. Which identification, address, credit and deposit options does this provider accept?
Phone Use a compatible unlocked phone or purchase one separately. Bring your own device or choose financing if the provider approves it. Is your exact model compatible, and will financing create a remaining device balance if you leave?
Flexibility Review top-up expiry, renewal and cancellation conditions. Review commitment, device-payment and cancellation conditions. What is the disclosed total cost, and what happens if you switch?
Network and features Depend on the selected network and plan. Depend on the selected network and plan. Will coverage, roaming and international calling meet your routes and family-contact needs?

Choose prepaid first when

  • You need a working Canadian number quickly and want to pay only for a defined period.
  • Your Canadian banking or credit history is not established and you prefer to avoid an application until you understand local requirements.
  • You already own an unlocked, compatible phone and do not need device financing.
  • Your expected use is uncertain, so a capped balance is more comfortable than an invoice that can include roaming or add-ons.

Consider postpaid when

  • You have predictable monthly income and prefer automatic monthly billing.
  • A particular postpaid plan, newcomer offer or roaming feature meets your needs.
  • You want to finance a phone and qualify under the provider’s terms.
  • You need a long-term account with features that the carrier does not make available on prepaid.

You can start with prepaid and move later, or begin with postpaid after confirming eligibility. Treat the first choice as a service decision, not a permanent statement about your immigration status.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How newcomer eligibility and credit checks actually work

Canadian carriers set their own onboarding rules. A postpaid application can involve identity verification, a Canadian address, a credit review, a security deposit or a restriction on device financing. A prepaid activation can also require identification or other verification. Because the sources do not establish one national rule, ask the provider to state its requirements for your exact plan and device.

Questions to ask before submitting an application

  • Which documents prove my identity and immigration status?
  • Do you require a Canadian address, Canadian credit file or credit review?
  • If I have little or no Canadian credit history, is a deposit or another payment option available?
  • Does this plan use prepaid top-ups or postpaid monthly billing?
  • Is financing available for my phone, and what happens to the device balance if I cancel or switch?
  • Can I activate with a passport, eSIM or a physical SIM, and are there model or market restrictions?

Example: a published newcomer BYOD offer

TELUS publishes a newcomer bring-your-own-device offer with specific documentation requirements. Its page asks for a valid passport, verified immigration status (for example, a visa and record of landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence, visitor record, work permit or study permit), a Canadian address and a valid email address. TELUS says order processing usually takes 48–72 hours and recommends setting up service no more than two weeks before arrival or immediately after arrival. These are terms of that provider’s published offer and can change; they are not requirements for every Canadian carrier. See the TELUS newcomer offer for current eligibility details.

Check your phone before choosing a plan

Bringing a phone you already own can avoid an unnecessary handset purchase. Confirm the exact model number, supported Canadian network bands, SIM or eSIM capability and unlock status before ordering. A phone that works in another country may lack the frequencies or VoLTE support needed on a Canadian network.

Bell’s BYOD information explains that customers can activate supported devices with a physical SIM or eSIM, subject to the model and market. Use the carrier’s compatibility checker rather than relying on the phone’s brand name alone: Bell cell phone plans and BYOD guidance.

Phones newly purchased from Canadian providers must be unlocked, and the CRTC says a provider must unlock a customer’s phone immediately on request at no charge. A used or imported phone can have different restrictions, so ask the seller or carrier to confirm that it is unlocked and compatible before paying.

If you need to buy a phone

  • Choose an unlocked model that the selected carrier confirms as compatible.
  • Compare the handset’s one-time cost with any financed device balance, taxes and required plan term.
  • Keep the device purchase separate from plan eligibility when possible; owning a compatible phone can make switching providers easier.
  • Record the model and IMEI, but share the IMEI only through the carrier’s secure activation process.

Compare data, coverage, roaming and total cost

The lowest advertised monthly amount is not necessarily the lowest cost for your situation. The CRTC’s plan-selection guidance recommends matching a plan to your talk, text and data use and comparing fees. Use the same checklist for prepaid and postpaid.

Coverage where you actually go

  1. List your home, workplace, school, frequent transit routes and places you visit outside major cities.
  2. Check the carrier’s coverage map, then ask people who use that network in those locations about indoor and rural performance.
  3. Confirm whether the plan includes 4G/5G access, Wi-Fi calling or other features you rely on; availability can depend on the phone model.

Data and overage controls

Estimate ordinary data use from video calls, maps, streaming, social media and software updates. Compare the included data, reduced-speed policy, add-on prices and whether data pauses when the allowance ends. Service providers must notify customers before they reach $50 in data overage fees during a billing cycle. That notice does not make unlimited roaming or other charges free, so review the plan’s controls before travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

International calling and roaming

Newcomers often need to call family abroad or travel between Canada and another country. Check whether international minutes are included, whether a roaming pass is required, the countries covered, the daily or monthly charge and what happens when the pass expires. A prepaid balance can run out during roaming; a postpaid invoice can accumulate roaming charges that are billed later.

Taxes, add-ons and device costs

Write down the recurring service charge, activation or modification fees, taxes, optional features, one-time SIM or eSIM costs and any device payment. Ask for the total amount due today and the expected recurring amount, rather than comparing only the headline plan price.

Activating a prepaid plan: a practical sequence

  1. Confirm requirements. Ask the carrier which ID, address, payment method and phone information it needs for the exact prepaid plan.
  2. Verify the device. Run the carrier’s compatibility check, confirm the phone is unlocked and choose a physical SIM or eSIM supported by that model.
  3. Select the term and allowance. Match the data, calling, texting and international options to your expected use; record the top-up expiry and renewal rules.
  4. Activate and test. Insert the SIM or download the eSIM, restart the phone, test a call, text and data session, and save the account’s top-up instructions.
  5. Track the balance. Set a calendar reminder before expiry. The Wireless Code gives at least seven calendar days after a prepaid commitment period expires to top up and retain the balance, but do not wait until the last day.

Applying for postpaid as a newcomer

  1. Ask for the eligibility path first. Tell the provider you are new to Canada and ask whether the selected plan requires a credit review, deposit, Canadian address or particular immigration documents.
  2. Prepare documents. Have the accepted identity and status documents, Canadian address and payment details ready. Requirements differ by provider and plan.
  3. Separate service from financing. Ask whether you can use BYOD even if device financing is unavailable. A financed handset can add a device balance and additional cancellation conditions.
  4. Read the agreement before accepting. Confirm billing date, included data, roaming rules, add-ons, commitment period, device payments and cancellation consequences.
  5. Check the first invoice. Compare it with the promised recurring amount and remove optional features you did not request. Keep the agreement and activation confirmation.

If the application is declined, ask whether the provider offers a deposit, a BYOD-only account or a prepaid alternative. A single provider’s decision does not establish that postpaid service is unavailable to newcomers across Canada.

Switching from prepaid to postpaid, or back again

Before switching, use or preserve any prepaid balance according to the carrier’s expiry rules and obtain the account number or porting information needed to keep your phone number. For postpaid accounts, settle outstanding service and device amounts and ask when the final bill will be issued. Keep the old SIM active until the number transfer completes, then test incoming calls, texts and data on the new service.

CRTC policy 2026-43 states that specified protections against fees tied to activating or modifying plans took effect on 12 June 2026. Check the policy and your contract for the fees that apply to your account; the effective date does not erase legitimate device balances or other disclosed obligations. The CRTC Wireless Code page also identifies some amended provisions scheduled to come into force on 13 April 2027. Those future provisions should not be treated as effective before that date.

Carrier terms change, so verify before you pay

Availability is not permanent. Bell states that it stopped offering prepaid plans to new activations on 31 December 2024 and directs customers seeking prepaid service to Lucky Mobile. This illustrates why an older comparison can be misleading: a carrier may change which brands, channels or plans accept new customers while the underlying prepaid/postpaid definitions stay the same. See Bell’s prepaid support page for its current statement.

Recheck the carrier’s current plan page, eligibility wording, coverage, top-up expiry and device terms on the day you activate. Save a copy of the offer and the agreement because promotions and newcomer programs can have an end date or limited eligibility.

A newcomer’s decision checklist

  • Payment: Decide whether advance top-ups or a monthly invoice better fits your cash flow.
  • Acceptance: Ask about ID, Canadian address, credit review, deposits and financing instead of assuming a universal rule.
  • Phone: Confirm exact model compatibility, unlocked status and SIM/eSIM support before selecting the plan.
  • Use: Estimate data, international calling, roaming and coverage at every location that matters.
  • Cost: Record recurring charges, taxes, add-ons, device payments and disclosed activation or modification fees.
  • Exit: Understand prepaid expiry, postpaid cancellation, number porting and any remaining device balance.
  • Currency: Verify the provider’s terms immediately before activation because offers and availability change.

For a newcomer who needs immediate, controlled service on an existing compatible phone, prepaid is often the lower-risk starting point. Postpaid becomes attractive when monthly billing, a specific feature or approved device financing outweighs the need for advance spending control. Either can be the right answer after you verify the provider’s current requirements and the network’s fit for your daily life.
