8K TVs have not disappeared, but they are no longer the only high-end direction. For most premium-TV shoppers, the practical choice is among 4K OLED, Mini LED, and newer RGB Mini LED or Micro RGB sets—with 8K still available in at least one documented 2026 lineup. Choose by room, screen size, gaming needs, and the specific model available where you live, not resolution alone.
What comes after 8K in premium TVs?
There is no single successor. Premium television ranges now span different display approaches, including 4K OLED, Mini LED, and RGB Mini LED or Micro RGB. Samsung’s 2026 materials list Micro RGB, OLED, Neo QLED, and Mini LED categories; Panasonic’s 2026 European range includes OLED, Mini LED, and QLED. These categories offer shoppers different features to compare rather than a simple march from one resolution to another. Samsung’s 2026 lineup and Panasonic’s European lineup are examples, not a complete account of every brand or market.
Nor is 8K gone: Samsung’s 2026 business report still lists Neo QLED 8K model families and screen sizes. That confirms availability in Samsung’s documented portfolio, not widespread popularity or suitability for every buyer. Samsung’s 2026 business report also lists premium 4K OLED models.

Which display type fits your viewing priorities?
4K OLED
OLED is a mainstream premium category to consider if you prioritize its display characteristics for movies and other viewing. The available lineup information establishes that 4K OLED sets are being sold; it does not establish that OLED is better than LCD-based alternatives in every room or at every price. Compare the exact model and look for independent testing before deciding.

Mini LED and other LCD-based sets
Mini LED is another premium option, with model-specific approaches to backlighting and dimming. A label alone does not tell you how a television will handle dark scenes, bright rooms, or reflections. Compare independent measurements and reviews for the particular screen size and model you are considering.
RGB Mini LED and Micro RGB
RGB Mini LED is moving beyond a one-company concept. TrendForce reports 2026 product adoption across Samsung, TCL, Hisense, and Sony, grouping their branded approaches under the RGB Mini LED category. Samsung calls its approach Micro RGB. This makes the technology a developing premium category, not a proven universal replacement for OLED or 8K.

TrendForce forecasts 1.7 million RGB Mini LED TV shipments for 2026, potentially approaching 2 million. That is a forecast, not a final shipment result. The same August 2026 report forecasts 194.65 million global TV shipments for the year, down 0.8% year over year. TrendForce’s August 2026 forecast includes Samsung Micro RGB, Sony BRAVIA RGB, Hisense RGB Mini, TCL RGB Mini, and other brands’ RGB Mini LED TVs in its category.
How to compare premium TVs for your room
Start with the conditions in which you actually watch. Manufacturer feature descriptions can identify options and specifications, but they are not independent picture-quality tests.

- Bright room or reflections: Check independent testing of the specific model’s brightness and reflection handling. Panasonic lists Glare Free options on selected 2026 models; that label should not be taken as a guarantee of performance across the range.
- Dark-room movies: Compare OLED and LCD-based local-dimming models using tests of the exact sets. The lineup information alone does not establish which will look better in your room.
- Large screen: Measure the viewing distance and the available wall or stand space, then confirm the model’s actual size. Samsung lists selected 2026 Micro RGB series from 65 to 115 inches; Panasonic’s 2026 range extends up to 86 inches.
- Gaming: Confirm HDMI 2.1, variable refresh rate (VRR), and refresh-rate support on the exact model and screen size. Panasonic notes that features vary by selected series.
- Smart TV platform: Check that the platform and apps you use are available in your country and on the particular series. Panasonic lists Fire TV, Google TV, Roku, and TiVo depending on market and series.
Why model and region matter
A product family name does not guarantee the same specifications or availability everywhere. Panasonic identifies different UK and Continental European model names and says smart platforms vary by market and series. Samsung likewise notes that model and series counts in its global lineup can vary by region. Check the local model code, size, ports, smart platform, and feature list before comparing prices or relying on a review of a similarly named set.
Is an 8K TV still worth considering?
Consider 8K if you have a specific source or use case that benefits from it and can buy a current model with the support and features you need. Otherwise, compare the available 4K options against your budget and viewing priorities. The documented lineups establish that 8K remains available in Samsung’s 2026 portfolio, but they do not quantify how much native 8K programming exists or explain why 8K has receded as a headline premium category. Avoid treating the resolution label alone as proof of a better overall television.

The premium-TV market is broadening, not settling on one replacement
The direction is a wider selection of premium display technologies rather than a clean handoff from 8K to one successor. Samsung executive SW Yong, President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, described a shift toward interaction as well as viewing: “We are currently experiencing a transformation in the way viewers enjoy the television experience, shifting from one centered on viewing to one based on direct interaction with users.” That is Samsung’s strategy view, not independent evidence of a broad change in viewer behavior. Samsung’s announcement describes its own 2026 products and positioning.
