Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Prehistoric World is a Minecraft Java modpack for Forge 1.20.1 built around a clear loop: explore for fossils, extract dinosaur DNA, operate revival machinery, restore prehistoric plants, complete quests, and turn the results into a dinosaur park. For the fullest documented experience, install the CurseForge distribution rather than the Modrinth copy, because the Modrinth listing says it cannot include FTB Quests or serverpacks.
This guide explains which files you need, how to install the pack, what to do first, how much memory the project documentation recommends, and how to set up multiplayer without confusing launcher, client, and server requirements.

What Prehistoric World adds to Minecraft
Prehistoric World is not simply a collection of dinosaur mobs. Its progression is organized around recovering evidence of extinct life and converting it into living creatures. You begin by exploring the world for fossils, process those fossils to obtain usable DNA, and then use new machines to revive dinosaurs and prehistoric plants. Quests provide direction while you expand toward a themed dinosaur park.
The pack also changes the surrounding adventure so that the park-building objective is reached through a broader survival experience. The project description highlights new biomes, dangerous dungeons, enemies, and animals, alongside medieval-themed content and mythological enemies from the Ice and Fire content ecosystem. Unusual Prehistory is specifically identified as a major source of dinosaur content. Optimization features and shader support are also highlighted, although the visual result still depends on your graphics settings and hardware.

The core progression loop
- Explore: travel through the modified world, searching for fossil-bearing locations and useful resources.
- Recover material: collect fossils and place them into the pack’s processing chain.
- Extract DNA: use the available machinery to turn fossil finds into dinosaur DNA.
- Revive life: run the machinery needed to bring extinct dinosaurs and prehistoric plants back.
- Follow quests: use the quest book to identify the next machine, resource, or objective rather than guessing the intended order.
- Build the park: create habitats and supporting infrastructure as your collection grows.
That sequence matters because the pack’s machines and quests are intended to gate progress. Treat the first expedition as an information-gathering trip, not as a race to build a finished park immediately.
Which download should you use?
Use the CurseForge project when you want the complete, documented pack. The Modrinth listing explicitly says its distribution cannot include FTB Quests or serverpacks and recommends the CurseForge version for the full experience. Both listings describe the same Minecraft Java and Forge 1.20.1 baseline, but the included files are not equivalent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Documented completeness | Full project distribution, including the files the project documents for quests and servers | Does not include FTB Quests or serverpacks, according to its listing |
| Game and loader target | Minecraft Java 1.20.1 on Forge | Minecraft Java 1.20.1 on Forge |
| Best use | Recommended for the complete quest-driven and multiplayer-oriented experience | Useful only if you specifically want the available Modrinth distribution and accept the missing components |
| Manual installation contents | Copy both mods and config when following the project’s manual instructions |
Do not assume the Modrinth files reproduce the CurseForge package |
The CurseForge project page recorded 1,045,274 downloads in a 2026 listing snapshot and was marked updated September 8, 2026. Those are platform metadata figures, not a measure of performance or a guarantee that every uploaded file is current on the day you install.
Requirements before you install
Game edition and loader
You need the Java Edition of Minecraft and a Forge 1.20.1 profile. This is not a Bedrock add-on. Do not select a different Minecraft release or a Fabric profile and expect the pack to load; the documented baseline is Forge 1.20.1.

Memory expectations
The project’s own pages show different memory figures by distribution and context:
| Context | Documented figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| CurseForge client guidance | At least 8 GB (8192 MB) allocated in the launcher | Use this as the current client recommendation on the CurseForge page, especially when loading or low-FPS problems occur |
| Modrinth client FAQ | 6 GB displayed | This is the figure shown by the Modrinth copy; it is not the same instruction as the CurseForge recommendation |
| Server guidance | At least 7 GB, with more for larger player counts | Applies to a server process, not automatically to each player’s client |
These numbers are documentation for particular listings and contexts, not a universal hardware requirement. Your launcher can allocate only memory that your computer actually has available; reserving nearly all physical RAM for Minecraft can make the operating system unstable. Hardware purchases cannot be prescribed responsibly without knowing your machine’s total capacity, memory generation, free slots, processor, and graphics hardware.
Install the pack
Option 1: Install from CurseForge
The CurseForge project is the preferred route when you want the documented quest and server files. Launcher labels can change, but the reliable process is to install the project as a Minecraft profile from its CurseForge listing, allow the launcher to create the instance, and launch that profile rather than launching an unmodified Forge profile.
- Install or open the CurseForge-compatible Minecraft launcher you normally use.
- Open the Prehistoric World project page and choose its Minecraft installation option.
- Confirm that the generated profile is for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Open the profile’s settings before the first launch and set memory to at least 8192 MB, following the current CurseForge recommendation.
- Start the profile once. The first launch can take longer while Forge and the mods build caches.
- If the main menu appears, open the quest interface and create a test world before investing time in a permanent park.
If the launcher offers more than one file or version, keep the client and server on the same pack release. A world created with one release can fail to load correctly when a different release changes mods or configuration.

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
Option 2: Add the project in GDLauncher
GDLauncher describes the normal flow as creating an instance, selecting Forge and a supported version, and then adding the project from the Addons tab.
- Choose Create instance in GDLauncher.
- Select Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge loader.
- Open the new instance’s Addons tab.
- Search for Prehistoric World and add the project.
- Set the instance memory before launching; use the 8 GB CurseForge client recommendation as the safer starting point when your machine can provide it.
- Launch and verify that the title screen identifies the expected Forge profile.
Option 3: Manual installation
Manual installation is appropriate when you already manage instances yourself, but it is also the easiest way to omit a required file. The project’s instructions specifically require copying both the mods and config folders.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Prepare a clean Forge 1.20.1 Minecraft instance.
- Obtain the complete CurseForge project files for the same release.
- Copy the entire
modsfolder into the instance directory, merging only when your launcher explicitly supports a controlled merge. - Copy the entire
configfolder as well. - Start the instance with Forge 1.20.1 and the memory setting appropriate to your machine.
Do not skip config. The project warns that without it, its custom modifications do not work as intended. A game that technically reaches the menu after copying only mods is not proof that the installation is correct.
What to do during your first session
Begin with a short exploration run
After spawning, gather ordinary survival supplies and map the nearby area before building a large enclosure. Look for places where fossil collection is practical, note dangerous terrain and dungeons, and mark a safe return route. The pack adds enemies, animals, biomes, and other exploration hazards, so a small shelter and spare tools are more useful at the start than decorative park buildings.

- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Open the quest progression early
Use the quest interface to identify the first intended machines and materials. Quests are not merely optional achievements in this pack: they provide the clearest route from fossil discovery to DNA extraction and revival. If your installation has no FTB Quests interface, that is a sign that you may have installed the incomplete Modrinth distribution or omitted required files.
Plan the fossil-to-DNA chain
Keep fossil finds organized rather than scattering them across random chests. The practical goal of your first base is a protected processing area with room for the machines needed to extract DNA. Leave space for power or fuel arrangements specified by the relevant quest steps, storage for intermediate materials, and a safe route to the outside.
Revive before you decorate
Once you can run the machinery, prioritize the first dinosaur and plant objectives that quests unlock. Test each revived creature in a controlled area before building a public-facing park. This lets you discover containment, terrain, and hostile-mob problems while the enclosure is still easy to rebuild.
Build the park as infrastructure
A usable dinosaur park needs more than fences. Separate visitor paths from animal habitats, keep processing machinery away from areas where creatures can damage builds, and reserve expansion space for later species. The medieval and mythological additions mean that the world itself can remain dangerous even when your park is established; lighting, gates, and an emergency route are practical design features rather than decoration.

Fix loading, lag, and low-FPS problems
Increase allocation before changing the pack
The project documentation links loading and low-FPS problems to memory allocation. Open your launcher’s profile or instance settings and raise the allocation to at least 8192 MB for the CurseForge client recommendation. Restart the launcher after saving the setting. If you are using the Modrinth listing, its FAQ displays 6 GB, but that figure should not be presented as a universal replacement for the CurseForge guidance.

- Confirm the profile says Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, not another loader or version.
- Confirm that the
modsfolder belongs to Prehistoric World rather than a different instance. - For a manual install, confirm that
configis present at the same instance level. - Do not test performance with several unrelated shader packs or extra mods enabled; first establish a clean baseline.
When more RAM does not solve the problem
More allocation cannot compensate for an unsupported Java version, a wrong loader, a damaged download, or a computer that is already paging because the operating system has no free memory. Recreate the instance from the complete project distribution, remove unplanned additions, and test again. Only after the clean profile works should you add shaders or other personal changes.
Do not buy memory blindly
The documentation does not establish a single upgrade that fits every computer. Laptop and desktop memory use different physical formats and may have different slot counts, limits, and generations. Check the machine’s existing capacity and supported memory before purchasing anything.
Play with friends
Prehistoric World is categorized for multiplayer, so friends can share exploration and park construction. Every player should install the same Minecraft version, Forge version, pack release, and configuration set. A client that launches alone can still fail to join when the server has a different mod list or release.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the files and world, but you are responsible for downloading the correct server package, allocating memory, opening or forwarding the required network access, backing up the world, and diagnosing crashes. Use the project’s server files rather than assuming that a client mods folder is a complete server installation. The project documentation recommends at least 7 GB for the server process and says larger player counts need more.
Managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host can reduce operating-system, networking, and backup work. The project owner recommends BisectHosting for servers, but that is a creator recommendation rather than independently verified current pricing or a guarantee of performance. The project page also mentions a creator discount code; verify the current code and terms directly before relying on it. Whichever host you choose, select a plan that can meet the pack’s documented server memory guidance and lets you pin the exact pack version.
| Consideration | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Higher: install files, Java/Forge, networking, backups, and updates yourself | Lower: the provider supplies a control panel and server environment |
| Memory | You choose and monitor the machine; start from the documented 7 GB server guidance | Choose a plan with at least the documented server allocation and headroom for more players |
| Player count | Limited by your hardware, upload speed, and world activity | Limited by the selected plan and provider resources |
| Version control | Full control, but every player must receive matching files | Usually easier to select a pack release, but still verify the client/server match |
| Troubleshooting | You diagnose Java, Forge, network, and mod errors | The host may help with infrastructure, while modpack-specific issues remain your responsibility |
Common mistakes checklist
- Installing the wrong edition: this guide applies to Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock.
- Choosing the wrong loader: use Forge 1.20.1.
- Using the incomplete distribution for quests: Modrinth documents that its copy lacks FTB Quests and serverpacks; choose CurseForge for the full experience.
- Copying only
mods: manual installation also requiresconfig. - Allocating too little memory: raise the client allocation to at least 8192 MB when following the current CurseForge recommendation.
- Mixing releases in multiplayer: make the client and server use the identical pack and Minecraft/Forge versions.
- Adding shaders or extra mods before testing: establish that the unmodified pack loads first.
- Building a giant park immediately: follow quests and validate each revival in a controlled enclosure before scaling up.
Is Prehistoric World right for you?
Choose it if you want a guided, machinery-based dinosaur progression inside a larger survival adventure, with quests leading from fossils to DNA and a long-term park-building objective. It is a poor fit if you want a lightweight dinosaur add-on, a Bedrock world, or a pack that works without Forge and a substantial memory allocation. For the documented feature set—including quests and server files—start with the CurseForge distribution, allocate the memory your machine can safely provide, and keep every multiplayer installation on the same release.
