Prehistoric World 2 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 built around exploration, fossil hunting, quest-led progression, and reviving extinct creatures. The current listed release is 7.1.0, uploaded October 8, 2026. To avoid broken dependencies, install it through a launcher that imports CurseForge packs, select the 1.20.1 Forge profile, and keep your world on that Minecraft version.
This guide explains the supported version, installation, first-launch checks, quest progression, dinosaur revival workflow, multiplayer options, server requirements, and safe update practices. The published project information does not provide a complete quest-by-quest reward table, so the quest book inside your installed release remains the authority for exact objectives and rewards.
What Prehistoric World 2 is designed to do
The pack’s stated purpose is to let you uncover ancient fossils, revive long-extinct creatures, and explore worlds lost for millions of years. CurseForge classifies it across Adventure and RPG, Quests, Multiplayer, Exploration, and Combat/PvP categories. Those labels describe the intended mix: you are not simply adding dinosaurs to an otherwise unchanged survival world. Exploration and progression are meant to work together, with discoveries and objectives guiding what you do next.
The project page reported 114,989 downloads on CurseForge in 2026. That is a point-in-time platform counter, not a quality score, review average, or guarantee that every installation uses the same release. Always check the file version shown by your launcher before opening an existing world.

Supported Minecraft version and loader
The current official file is Prehistoric World 2 – MC 1.20.1 – 7.1.0, uploaded October 8, 2026, and it uses Forge. Select Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge when creating or importing the instance. Do not combine the 1.20.1 files with a different Minecraft version, loader, or an older profile that contains unrelated mods.
| Item | Supported value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pack release | 7.1.0 | Current file listed on October 8, 2026 |
| Minecraft | 1.20.1 | The pack’s files and world data are version-specific |
| Mod loader | Forge | The launcher must create a Forge instance, not Fabric or another loader |
| Java | Java 17 or newer | Recorded requirement for the supported 1.20.1 build |
| Installation format | CurseForge pack ZIP | Compatible launchers can import the archive and resolve dependencies |
Using the correct Minecraft version is especially important for worlds you intend to keep. A newer or older profile can reject mods, remove registry entries, or make a save unusable. Treat the installed profile as a pinned environment rather than changing versions casually.
How to install Prehistoric World 2
1. Prepare Java and a launcher
Install Java 17 or a newer compatible Java runtime. Then choose a launcher that can import CurseForge modpacks, such as Prism Launcher, Modrinth App, or CurseForge App. Keep the launcher and Java installation current enough for your operating system, but do not add extra mods before confirming that the untouched pack starts.
2. Obtain the pack ZIP
Download the Prehistoric World 2 ZIP for the 1.20.1 Forge release. Confirm that the file name identifies the intended release instead of a similarly named pack or a different Minecraft version. Leave the ZIP intact; the launcher needs the archive to read its manifest and dependency list.
3. Import the archive
- Open your chosen launcher and select its option to create or import an instance.
- Choose the CurseForge or modpack import workflow.
- Browse to the downloaded Prehistoric World 2 ZIP and select it.
- Allow the launcher to resolve and download the listed mods, configs, libraries, and resource files.
- Open the new instance settings and verify that Minecraft is 1.20.1 and the mod loader is Forge.
Dependency resolution can take several minutes. Canceling midway may leave an incomplete instance, so let the launcher finish before troubleshooting. If the import fails, delete only the incomplete instance and retry with a fresh copy of the ZIP rather than manually mixing files from another installation.
4. Set memory conservatively
Give the instance enough memory for a large exploration pack while leaving adequate RAM for your operating system and other applications. The exact amount depends on your computer; start with the launcher’s normal recommended setting, observe whether the game reaches the title screen, and increase it only if logs show memory pressure. Assigning nearly all physical RAM can cause operating-system swapping and make performance worse.

5. Launch a test world
- Start the imported instance once without changing mods or configuration files.
- At the title screen, verify that the pack loads rather than falling back to a vanilla profile.
- Create a temporary test world.
- Open the quest book and confirm that its interface and initial entries appear.
- Exit normally and inspect that the save was created in the instance’s own saves folder.
Only after this test should you begin a main survival world. Keep the test save available for checking future updates or diagnosing a server/client mismatch.
What the quests do—and what is not published
Quests are a central pack category, and the progression theme connects exploration, fossils, and reviving extinct creatures. However, the public project information does not publish the quest book’s chapter names, exact objectives, reward tables, or unlock order. Any detailed list found elsewhere may describe a different release or a modified installation.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Use the in-game dependency lines
Open the quest book in your installed profile and follow the lines that connect prerequisites to later tasks. Those links are the reliable indication of what your release expects you to complete first. When a task is locked, select it to inspect the displayed prerequisite instead of trying random items or recipes.
Record objectives as you play
For a long playthrough, keep a simple note of active objectives, required materials, and locations. This is useful when several exploration tasks are open at once or when a server resets a player’s local quest display. Capture the exact wording shown in your own quest book; names and rewards can change between pack versions.
Understand rewards cautiously
Do not assume that a reward shown in a video or forum post belongs to 7.1.0. Check the reward panel in your current quest entry before spending rare resources or planning a build around a promised item. If a quest appears incomplete after an update, compare the objective text and dependency line with a backup copy of the world before attempting to force completion.
How dinosaur revival works in practice
The pack’s published description establishes the goal of finding fossils and reviving extinct creatures, but it does not provide a universal recipe list, machine sequence, creature roster, or habitat specification. Those details can depend on the included mods and the release you imported. The safest approach is therefore evidence-driven: use the quest book and the recipe viewer available in your instance rather than copying an old walkthrough.

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
A reliable progression loop
- Explore for fossil-related discoveries. Follow the active exploration objectives and gather the materials they explicitly request. Mark useful locations so you can return without repeating a long search.
- Check the next dependency. When a quest unlocks a fossil, laboratory, incubation, or creature-related task, read the entry’s prerequisites and reward panel before crafting.
- Inspect the recipe in your installed pack. Use the recipe lookup interface supplied by the modpack to see the current ingredients, processing steps, and available alternatives. The displayed recipe is more reliable than a guide written for another build.
- Complete the revival step shown by the quest. Follow the exact block, item, or processing instruction presented in the entry. If the task remains locked, return to its dependency line rather than repeatedly attempting the final action.
- Prepare a controlled enclosure. Keep newly revived creatures away from hazards and provide room to observe their behavior before moving them to a larger park or base.
- Back up before major experiments. Creature systems can involve several entities, inventories, or processing blocks. A manual save backup gives you a recovery point if a mod update or failed experiment corrupts part of the setup.
Why a precise dinosaur list is not included here
The available official information confirms the revival theme but does not establish which species, eggs, DNA items, machines, growth stages, or breeding mechanics are present in 7.1.0. Naming a species or promising a particular reward would risk giving you instructions for a different pack configuration. Use the in-game entries as the source of truth for your installed release.
Choosing a solo or multiplayer approach
The pack supports both individual exploration and shared progression, but the experience changes substantially when several players divide tasks.

|---|---|---|
| Pacing | You control when to leave the base, explore, and complete objectives. | Groups can split exploration and construction, but one player may advance a dependency before others are ready. |
| Exploration | Every fossil search and dangerous encounter is your responsibility. | Players can map separate areas and share coordinates or materials. |
| Park or base building | Progress is slower but design decisions are consistent. | Assign roles such as expedition lead, builder, and resource manager to avoid duplicated work. |
| Quest progression | The quest book provides a single clear sequence for your world. | Agree on a shared order and record which dependency has been completed. |
| Technical setup | Only the local client must load the pack. | Every client and the server must use the same Minecraft, Forge, and pack versions. |
For a group, establish a backup schedule and a rule that nobody changes the server pack or removes mods while players are online. A seemingly harmless client-side change can still create mismatched registries or missing items when the world is opened by another installation.
Running a server for friends
Use the matching server pack
A separate 1.0 GB Prehistoric World 2 (Server Pack) — Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge is listed with the release. Use a server package intended for 1.20.1 Forge, and make sure each player installs the matching client release. Do not substitute a vanilla server or a server pack from another Minecraft version.
Best Value
Basic deployment sequence
- Download the 1.20.1 Forge server pack associated with the release you want to run.
- Extract it into a dedicated server directory with sufficient disk space for the world, logs, backups, and future updates.
- Install or point the server to Java 17 or newer.
- Run the Forge server’s startup process once so it can create its configuration and agreement files.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated file only after reading its terms.
- Start the server again and wait for the console to report that it is ready for connections.
- Have every player import the same 1.20.1 Forge client pack before joining.
The listed 1.0 GB describes the server-pack download, not a guaranteed RAM requirement or a promise that any size of world will run well on a machine with 1 GB of memory. Monitor actual memory use, tick performance, storage growth, and connection stability as players explore new terrain.
Hosted versus self-managed servers
If you do not want to maintain Java, ports, backups, and uptime yourself, you can use a Minecraft server-hosting service that supports Forge modpacks. The release page advertises a 25% discount with code Lupin; availability, geography, eligibility, and terms can change, so verify the current offer before relying on it. Treat this as an optional convenience, not a requirement for playing the pack.
Backups and safe version updates
Back up the world before changing the pack, Forge build, Java runtime, server files, or major configuration settings. Store at least one copy outside the active instance or server directory so a failed update cannot overwrite every copy.
The 6.1.0 release page includes this warning exactly: “In this version, bugs have been fixed and mods have been updated. It is not essential to update, but it is highly recommended. Remember to always make a backup of your world, and never change version, if you play in 1.20.1 you must continue in that version.”
The wording reflects two practical rules. First, an update may be recommended without being mandatory; read its changelog and decide whether the fixes justify the risk to an active world. Second, remain on Minecraft 1.20.1 for a world created for this pack. Updating the pack within the same Minecraft version is safer than moving the save to a different Minecraft version, but it still requires a backup and a test copy.
A safer update procedure
- Stop the game or server cleanly.
- Copy the entire world folder and label it with the current pack release.
- Duplicate the existing launcher instance or server directory instead of updating the only copy.
- Install the target 1.20.1 Forge pack version in the duplicate.
- Open the copied world and test quest progress, inventories, creature areas, and major machines.
- Only switch the live instance after the test behaves normally.
Troubleshooting common failures
The launcher rejects the ZIP
- Confirm that you selected the complete CurseForge pack archive, not a single mod file.
- Download the archive again if the file is incomplete.
- Use the launcher’s modpack import function rather than extracting individual JAR files manually.
- Check that the launcher supports Forge modpack manifests.
The game crashes before the title screen
- Verify that the instance says Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Confirm that Java 17 or newer is selected for this instance.
- Remove any extra mods, shaders, or experimental configuration changes and test the untouched pack.
- Review the launcher log for the first dependency or Java error, not only the final crash summary.
A world will not open after an update
- Stop trying to open the original save repeatedly.
- Restore the pre-update backup and test the new release on a copy.
- Check whether the update changed Minecraft version, Forge, or a required mod.
- Keep the save on 1.20.1 as required by the release warning.
Players cannot join the server
- Compare the client and server Minecraft versions, Forge versions, and pack releases character by character.
- Ensure every player imported the same pack rather than assembling a personal mod list.
- Check the server console for missing-mod or registry errors.
- Restart after correcting files and keep a backup before changing the live world.
Quest progress appears missing
- Open the quest book and inspect the dependency line; the task may still be locked rather than lost.
- Confirm that you joined the intended world and player profile.
- Compare the current release with the one used when the task was completed.
- Restore a backup if an update changed objectives or caused a progression error.
A practical first-session plan
- Install Java 17 or newer and import the 1.20.1 Forge pack.
- Launch a test world and verify the quest book.
- Create a separate main world only after the test closes cleanly.
- Read the first available objectives before spending rare materials.
- Explore methodically, marking fossil-related locations and returning with the tools or items your objectives require.
- Use the recipe viewer and quest dependencies to confirm each revival step.
- Keep a backup before opening a new dimension, relocating creatures, or applying a pack update.
- For multiplayer, agree on a progression order and make sure every client matches the server exactly.
Following this sequence keeps the pack’s central loop—explore, uncover fossils, complete dependencies, and revive creatures—intact without relying on quest lists or recipes that may belong to another release.
