You do not have to give up your cat during pregnancy. The safest arrangement is for someone else to empty and wash the litter box. If you must do it yourself, wear disposable gloves, avoid touching your face, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately afterward. Have the box cleaned every day, because Toxoplasma gondii shed in cat feces generally needs one to five days to become infectious.

These steps reduce exposure; they do not diagnose or eliminate every route of infection. A pregnant person who may have been exposed, or who develops possible symptoms, should contact an obstetric or other healthcare professional for individualized advice about testing.

Why toxoplasmosis matters during pregnancy

Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says more than 40 million people in the United States are infected, and most healthy people have no symptoms. That widespread exposure does not make pregnancy-related infection harmless: a person newly infected during pregnancy or shortly before it can pass the infection to the fetus.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), citing CDC information, estimates that 300 to 4,000 fetuses in the United States are infected with toxoplasmosis each year. Possible congenital effects described by the FDA include hearing loss, intellectual disability and blindness. Some problems are present at birth, while others may not become apparent until years later.

Cat feces are one possible source of infection, but litter is not the only one. Eating undercooked meat, handling contaminated soil or sand, drinking untreated water, and transferring contamination between raw food and ready-to-eat food can also expose someone to the parasite. A pregnancy-safe plan therefore combines litter precautions with cat, garden and kitchen controls.

Why the daily schedule matters

Freshly shed Toxoplasma organisms are not immediately infectious. CDC guidance states that the parasite generally requires one to five days after being shed in feces to become infectious. Removing feces every day reduces the time available for that change to occur. Daily cleaning lowers risk; it does not make direct contact safe without gloves and handwashing.

Can you clean a litter box while pregnant?

Pregnancy itself does not require rehoming a cat. The preferred control is delegation: ask a partner, relative, friend or another reliable helper to perform the entire litter task, including removing waste, replacing litter and cleaning the box. Make the arrangement explicit so that “someone else will do it” does not turn into an occasionally missed day.

“If possible, have someone else change the litter box. If no one else can, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.” — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, People at Increased Risk for Toxoplasmosis (2025).

If you cannot avoid the task, use the following procedure every time:

  1. Prepare before opening the box. Put disposable nitrile gloves on both hands. Have a scoop, a sealable waste bag and fresh litter ready so you do not walk around the home wearing contaminated gloves.
  2. Keep gloved hands away from your face. Do not eat, drink, touch your eyes or adjust contact lenses while cleaning. Keep children and food-preparation items away from the area.
  3. Remove feces and clumps carefully. Scoop slowly to limit dust and splashes. Place waste directly into the bag, close it securely and dispose of it according to local household-waste rules.
  4. Clean the box and nearby surfaces. Follow the litter manufacturer’s directions for washing the pan and wipe up tracked litter or visible residue. A product claim does not replace handwashing.
  5. Remove gloves without touching the contaminated exterior. Turn them inside out as you take them off, put them in the waste bag and seal it.
  6. Wash your hands immediately. Use soap and running water, scrub all surfaces of your hands and rinse thoroughly. Dry with a clean towel. Hand sanitizer is not a substitute when soap and water are available.

How often should cat litter be changed during pregnancy?

Remove feces and urine clumps every day, not only when the box looks full or smells. The one-to-five-day window described by CDC is the reason daily timing matters. If a helper normally cleans every few days, change that routine for the pregnancy.

A practical daily checklist

  • Confirm that the box was cleaned within the previous 24 hours.
  • Use a dedicated scoop and a lined or sealable waste container.
  • Wear disposable gloves for scooping, dumping old litter or washing the pan.
  • Clean surrounding floors or surfaces where litter has been tracked.
  • Bag waste before removing gloves.
  • Wash hands with soap and water immediately after the task.

Ask the helper to follow the same schedule and handwashing routine. If you are unsure whether a previous cleaning occurred, treat the box as overdue rather than assuming it is safe.

What to do when nobody else can clean the box

Delegation is the preferred option, but some households have no available helper. In that case, use the full protective routine rather than skipping cleaning for several days. The key controls are disposable gloves, no face touching, immediate handwashing and daily removal of waste.

Reduce avoidable contact

  • Keep the scoop, bags and litter together so you can finish quickly without searching for supplies.
  • Choose a location away from kitchen counters, dining areas and children’s play spaces.
  • Wash any reusable scoop or container after use, and keep it separate from food-preparation equipment.
  • Ask a healthcare professional whether your personal medical history calls for additional precautions after a specific exposure.

Do not rely on skipping the box, spraying a deodorizer or choosing a litter marketed with an antimicrobial claim. Those actions do not replace removing feces and washing your hands.

Cat and household controls that lower exposure

Keep the cat indoors

Keeping cats indoors reduces opportunities for hunting and eating infected prey. It also makes the cat’s food and outdoor exposure easier to control. Do not adopt or handle stray cats, especially kittens, while pregnant, and do not bring a new cat into the household during pregnancy.

Feed commercial food, never raw meat

Feed commercially prepared dry or canned cat food. Do not feed raw or undercooked meat. Raw diets can expose the cat to the parasite and create additional handling risks in the home. Store pet food and feeding utensils away from areas used to prepare human food, and wash your hands after feeding or handling food containers.

Use gloves for soil and sand

Outdoor soil, garden beds and children’s sandboxes can contain cat feces. Wear gloves when gardening or handling soil or sand, avoid touching your face, and wash your hands with soap and water afterward. Keep cats out of sandboxes when possible and cover them when they are not in use.

Control food and water exposures

Wash produce before eating it. Cook meat to safe internal temperatures, keep raw meat separate from ready-to-eat food, and wash knives, boards and counters after raw-meat preparation. Avoid untreated water. These measures address non-litter routes of toxoplasmosis and remain important even when another person handles the cat box.

Comparing litter-management options

Use these criteria when deciding how your household will manage the box. A plan is stronger when it covers every row, rather than relying on a single precaution.

Option Who performs the task Gloves and handwashing Cleaning frequency Cat and food controls Soil and sand controls
Preferred delegation Partner, family member or other helper The cleaner wears disposable gloves and washes hands afterward Every day; feces are removed before the one-to-five-day infectious window Cat stays indoors and eats commercial dry or canned food; no raw meat Pregnant person wears gloves and washes hands after gardening or handling sand
Unavoidable self-cleaning Pregnant person Disposable nitrile gloves, no face touching, immediate soap-and-water washing Every day, with waste bagged and the area cleaned Use the same indoor and feeding controls Use the same soil and sand controls
Incomplete plan Task is shared informally or cleaning is delayed Gloves or handwashing may be missed Every few days or only when the box smells Outdoor hunting or raw feeding may continue Garden and sandbox exposures are not addressed

The first two rows can be made reliable with a written schedule and supplies kept at the box. The last row leaves several exposure pathways uncontrolled.

Symptoms, exposure and when to call a healthcare professional

Most healthy people with toxoplasmosis have no symptoms, so feeling well does not prove that an infection did not occur. Possible symptoms listed in FDA guidance include swollen glands, fever, headache, muscle pain and a stiff neck. These symptoms have many possible causes, and they cannot confirm toxoplasmosis by themselves.

Contact an obstetric clinician, midwife or other healthcare professional if you are pregnant and believe you had a significant exposure, cleaned litter without the recommended precautions, handled potentially contaminated soil or meat, or develop concerning symptoms. Tell the clinician what happened, when it occurred, whether gloves and handwashing were used, and whether the cat is indoor-only or hunts outdoors. The clinician can decide whether testing is appropriate and explain what the results mean in your circumstances.

Do not self-diagnose from a symptom list or begin treatment without medical advice. Testing and treatment decisions depend on pregnancy timing, the type of exposure and your medical history.

Disposable gloves: choosing and using them correctly

CDC and FDA guidance specifically recommend disposable gloves when a pregnant person must clean litter. Disposable nitrile gloves are a practical choice because they are widely available and can be discarded after one task. Select a size that fits snugly enough for control without tearing, and keep an unopened supply near the litter area.

Gloves reduce contact with contaminated material but do not eliminate risk. A contaminated glove can transfer organisms to a phone, door handle, face or food. Remove gloves before touching household objects and wash your bare hands with soap and water every time. If a glove tears, stop, remove it safely, wash your hands and put on a new pair before continuing.

Informational disclosure: This category is mentioned for safety planning, not as a guarantee of protection or a substitute for CDC precautions and handwashing.

Common mistakes and fixes

Cleaning only when the box is full

Why it fails: It can leave feces in the box long enough for Toxoplasma to become infectious.

Fix: Set a daily reminder and have the helper initial a simple calendar or checklist after cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wearing gloves but skipping handwashing

Why it fails: The outside of a glove can contaminate hands during removal, and gloves can have tiny tears or gaps.

Assuming an indoor cat makes every exposure impossible

Why it fails: Indoor status lowers hunting exposure but does not address contaminated soil, undercooked meat, untreated water or kitchen cross-contamination.

Fix: Combine indoor housing with commercial food, safe meat preparation, washed produce, treated water and gloves for soil or sand.

Thinking an absence of symptoms rules out infection

Why it fails: CDC reports that most healthy infected people have no symptoms.

Fix: Discuss a concerning exposure with a healthcare professional even if you feel well.

Preparing a household plan before delivery

  1. Assign a primary cleaner and a backup. Write both names and the days each person will clean.
  2. Place supplies together. Keep disposable gloves, scoop, bags and fresh litter beside the box, away from food.
  3. Set a daily reminder. A phone or calendar alert helps prevent the one-to-five-day interval from being exceeded.
  4. Review cat access. Keep the cat indoors, prevent access to sandboxes and do not introduce a stray or new cat during pregnancy.
  5. Review food and garden habits. Plan for washed produce, thoroughly cooked meat, safe separation of raw foods, treated water and gloves for soil.
  6. Save your clinician’s contact information. If an exposure occurs, record the date and details so you can give a clear account when you call.
