Use a prediction-market event contract when the exact company milestone is listed with objective, transparent settlement and you want a binary yes/no payoff. Use a stock option when your thesis is about how far and how quickly the share price will move, not merely whether the milestone occurs. An approval, launch, earnings beat or revenue target can be economically important without producing a profitable call or put. The market may already have priced in success, the move may be too small, implied volatility may fall, or the option may expire first. Conversely, an event contract can settle differently from a headline interpretation if its wording, evidence hierarchy or cutoff rules differ from your assumption.
What you are actually betting on
The two instruments answer different questions. A prediction-market contract asks whether a defined real-world event will happen under stated rules. A stock option derives its value from the underlying share price and expires on a fixed date. Treating them as interchangeable ways to “bet on an FDA approval” or “play an earnings beat” is the source of many avoidable losses.
Prediction-market event contracts
An event contract normally presents a yes/no proposition, such as whether a named company will receive a specified regulatory approval by a specified date. A “yes” share trades at a price that commonly reflects the market’s implied probability. If the contract resolves yes, it pays according to the contract’s terms; if it resolves no, it does not pay the yes outcome. The exact economics depend on the venue’s rules, fees, position limits and settlement process.

The contract should define the company, event, deadline, qualifying language, source of evidence and authority that makes the final determination. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says participants are entitled to timely, transparent information about event-contract trading rules and terms, including payout, prices, and how and by whom settlement determinations will be made. Read those terms rather than relying on a market label or a news headline.

Listed stock options
A call gives its owner the right to buy the underlying stock at a fixed strike price on or before a specified expiration date. A put gives the right to sell at the strike. The SEC’s Investor.gov describes options as contracts whose value derives from an underlying asset and emphasizes expiration and underlying-asset risk.
An option therefore expresses an indirect catalyst thesis: the stock must move in the expected direction, by enough to cover the premium and other transaction costs, before time runs out. The option can lose value even when the milestone occurs exactly as forecast.
Side-by-side decision table
| Axis | Prediction-market event contract | Listed stock option |
|---|---|---|
| Payoff definition | Usually tied to a specified yes/no outcome and settlement rule; wording and evidence hierarchy are decisive. | Tied to stock price relative to strike, the premium paid, implied volatility and expiration. |
| Milestone exposure | Direct when the exact milestone is listed and objectively settled; unavailable or only a poor proxy when it is not. | Indirect: it expresses the expected stock-price reaction, not the truth of the milestone itself. |
| Timing | The contract cutoff and settlement date control; administrative resolution can occur after the event. | Expiration is hard: the call or put ceases to exist after expiration. |
| Loss and leverage | The stake is generally bounded by the position, but liquidity, fees and settlement disputes still matter. | A long option can lose the full premium; short options create potentially large obligations and assignment risk. |
| Liquidity and execution | Depends on venue, market depth and whether that particular milestone attracts traders. | Depends on the option chain, bid-ask spread, open interest and volatility; broker approval is required. |
| Access and regulation | Check authorization in your jurisdiction and the current contract rules. Kalshi says it became a CFTC-designated contract market in 2020. | Listed U.S. equity options are exchange-cleared products. Read your broker’s disclosures and the SEC and OCC risk documents. |
When an event contract is the better fit
Your thesis is binary
If your question is “Will the named company receive this approval by 30 June?” a correctly specified event contract maps closely to that question. You do not need to estimate how many dollars the stock should rise or whether a one-day rally will exceed an option’s break-even price.
The settlement definition matches your information
Check whether “approval” means a formal agency action, an announcement, a filing, or another defined status. A contract may require a particular regulator’s database or a named company filing. It may also specify what happens if the agency delays, requests more information, grants a conditional approval, or issues a decision after the cutoff. Those details can make a casual “yes” thesis settle no.
You can tolerate venue and liquidity constraints
A contract is useful only if it exists and can be traded at a reasonable price. Verify two-sided quotes, available size, fees and any position or trading-hour limits before entering. A thin market can make the displayed probability stale and make exiting costly.
The probability price is attractive after fees
Suppose a yes share costs 0.62 in a contract that pays 1.00 if yes. Before fees, the breakeven probability is approximately 62 percent. A trader who estimates a 70 percent chance has a positive expected value only if the estimate is sound and fees, slippage and the venue’s settlement rules do not consume the difference. This is a probability trade, not a guaranteed return.

When a stock option is the better fit
You are forecasting the size and timing of the stock move
An option can express “the stock will rise at least enough, soon enough, to exceed this strike and premium.” That is a different prediction from “the company will hit the milestone.” It is appropriate when you have a view on market reaction, positioning, expectations and the date by which the move will occur.
The milestone is not listed
Prediction markets require a listed question. If no contract covers the exact product launch, revenue threshold or agency action, an option may be the only listed derivative available, but it remains a price-reaction proxy. Do not substitute a vaguely related event contract and assume it has the same exposure.
You can model the break-even hurdle
For a long call, the simple expiration break-even is strike plus premium per share, before fees. For a long put, it is strike minus premium. Before trading, ask what stock price is required, on what date, and whether the expected catalyst can plausibly produce that move. A call can be directionally correct yet lose if the stock rises less than the break-even amount.
Why a correct milestone forecast can still lose on an option
Success was already priced in
Option prices incorporate the market’s expectations before the announcement. If approval was widely expected, the stock may barely move when approval arrives. A call buyer can be right about the event and wrong about the surprise relative to expectations.
The move is too small
Consider an illustrative stock at 100, a 105 call costing 2.50, and an expiration immediately after the event. At expiration the call needs the stock above 107.50 to have intrinsic value greater than the premium, ignoring fees. A rise from 100 to 106 confirms the bullish direction but still loses money for the buyer.
The option expires first
Options have a hard deadline. A delayed launch, postponed vote or regulatory request can leave the thesis intact while the contract expires. After expiration, the option no longer provides exposure to a later decision.

Implied volatility falls
Options often carry elevated implied volatility before a known catalyst. After the announcement, that uncertainty can disappear. The resulting volatility decline can reduce an option’s market value even if the stock moves favorably. Near expiration, volatility changes can produce especially sharp price changes, a risk highlighted by the SEC.
Time value decays
An option premium includes time value as well as intrinsic value. With each passing day, less time remains for the expected move. A forecast that is correct eventually may not be correct within the option’s remaining life.
Long, short and spread positions
Buying calls or puts
The buyer’s maximum loss is generally the premium paid, plus commissions and fees. The premium can expire completely worthless. A long call needs a sufficiently large upward move; a long put needs a sufficiently large downward move. Direction alone is not enough.

Selling options
Selling changes the risk from paying a known premium to accepting an obligation. A short call may require delivery of shares at the strike; an uncovered short call can have very large losses if the stock rises. A short put may require purchasing shares at the strike, tying up capital and exposing the seller to a falling stock. Assignment can occur before expiration on an American-style option.
The Options Industry Council states that once you sell an American-style put or call, you may be assigned on any business day. Assignment risk generally increases as expiration approaches and as the option moves deeper in the money. Broker margin rules, exercise procedures and account permissions apply.
Defined-risk spreads
A vertical spread buys one option and sells another with the same expiration. The short leg can reduce the net premium, while the long leg limits the maximum loss or gain according to the strikes. Spreads introduce additional execution details: both legs must fill, the maximum profit is capped, and early assignment of the short leg can require action. They are a way to define risk, not a way to make an event prediction direct.

How to analyze a prediction-market contract
- Copy the full proposition. Record the company name, event definition, geographic or product scope, deadline and time zone. Do not rely on a shortened title.
- Identify the authoritative source. Determine whether settlement relies on a regulator database, a company filing, an exchange notice or another named source. Note the evidence hierarchy if sources conflict.
- Read edge cases. Check cancellation terms, delayed announcements, conditional decisions, mergers, ticker changes, venue outages and dispute or appeal procedures.
- Calculate the all-in price. Include trading fees, withdrawal or conversion costs where applicable, and the spread between the displayed bid and ask. Compare your probability estimate with the executable price, not just the midpoint.
- Check liquidity before sizing. Inspect available quantity at each price and whether you could exit before settlement. A position that cannot be closed is different from one that can.
- Confirm legal and account access. Verify that the venue is authorized for your country and that the current contract rules permit your intended activity. Rules and tax treatment can change.
How to analyze an option around a milestone
- Define the catalyst date range. Use the expected announcement window, then test what happens if it is early, late or postponed. Select an expiration that leaves time for the expected reaction; do not assume the event date is the expiration date.
- Choose the thesis direction. A call expresses a bullish price move; a put expresses a bearish move. If your view is only that volatility will rise, a directional option may be the wrong instrument.
- Compute break-even and maximum loss. For a long call, start with strike plus premium; for a long put, strike minus premium. The maximum loss for either long option is the premium if held to expiration, before fees.
- Compare implied volatility with the catalyst. Elevated volatility makes options more expensive. Model a post-announcement volatility decline rather than assuming the stock move alone determines the result.
- Inspect the chain. Review bid-ask spreads, open interest, volume, contract multiplier, ex-dividend dates and whether the option is American-style. Use limit orders when appropriate.
- Plan the exit. Decide whether you will sell before the event, close after the announcement, exercise, or accept expiration. A plan should cover a delayed catalyst and an adverse volatility move.
- Check assignment and margin. If any leg is short, know the shares or cash you may have to deliver or receive and whether your broker can liquidate positions under its rules.
Worked comparison: an approval thesis
Assume a biotechnology company is awaiting a regulator’s decision by a stated date. An event contract asks exactly whether the approval will be granted by that date. A yes share priced at 0.55 offers a binary payoff tied to that wording. Your analysis focuses on the probability of the defined decision, the reliability of the settlement source and the cost of entering and exiting.
An option trade asks a different question. Suppose the stock trades at 40, a 45 call costs 1.20, and expires shortly after the decision. Ignoring fees, the expiration break-even is 46.20. Approval could be likely yet fail to push the stock above 46.20, particularly if investors expected it. If the decision is delayed beyond expiration, the call can expire worthless while the event thesis remains unresolved. If the call was sold instead, the position carries assignment and potentially much larger obligations.
These are not competing prices for the same claim. The event contract is about the regulator’s defined decision; the call is about the stock’s magnitude and timing of reaction.

FDA or other regulatory approval
Distinguish approval of a named indication from clearance of a device, an advisory-panel vote, a filing acceptance or a complete response letter. A contract may recognize only a formal action in a specified database. For options, estimate how much of the outcome is already reflected in the share price and volatility, and account for the possibility of a gap that makes execution difficult.
Product launch
“Launch” can mean a press announcement, first commercial shipment, general availability, or launch in a particular country. Use the contract’s definition if available. An option trade must additionally forecast sales expectations, supply constraints and whether the market reacts to the announcement or to later adoption data.

Earnings beat
An event question may define a beat against a particular earnings-per-share or revenue figure and a specific reporting release. Options usually react to the surprise relative to consensus, guidance, margins and forward outlook, not merely whether one number exceeds a threshold. A small beat with weak guidance can hurt a call.

Revenue target
Verify the period, currency, accounting basis and whether the target is reported revenue, recurring revenue or another metric. For an option, determine whether the target is already in analyst estimates and what price move is required to overcome the premium.
Costs, access and operational risks
Fees and spreads
Event-contract fees and option commissions vary by venue and broker. The bid-ask spread is a real cost in both markets, especially around news. Use executable quotes and include fees in expected-value and break-even calculations.
Liquidity and price impact
Option liquidity can differ dramatically by strike and expiration. Event-contract liquidity can disappear when interest in a particular milestone is low. Large orders may move the market; a quoted probability is not necessarily the price available for your whole position.
Jurisdiction and taxation
Access, product legality, reporting requirements and tax treatment vary by country and can change. Obtain current disclosures from the venue or broker and professional tax advice for your situation. Do not assume an event contract receives the same treatment as an exchange-listed option.
Settlement and corporate actions
Read what happens if a company is acquired, changes its name or ticker, splits its stock, withdraws a product or receives a conditional decision. Options have standardized adjustment procedures for some corporate actions; event contracts follow their own written rules. The relevant document is the current contract specification, not a social-media summary.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the exact milestone listed, with a definition you can test?
- Who decides settlement, which evidence controls, and when is the cutoff?
- Are you forecasting the event’s truth or the stock’s price reaction?
- What probability or price is required to break even after fees?
- What happens if the event is delayed, conditional or already expected?
- Can you enter and exit at a reasonable spread and size?
- For an option, what are the expiration, implied-volatility and assignment risks?
- For a short option, can you fund delivery or purchase if assigned?
- Is the product permitted and appropriately disclosed in your jurisdiction?
What the historical record does—and does not—establish
The CFTC’s history identifies the Iowa Presidential Stock Market, now the Iowa Electronic Market, as the first modern prediction market, created in 1988 as an experimental academic program at the University of Iowa. Kalshi’s official history says it became the first fully regulated U.S. financial exchange specifically for event contracts in 2020 and was designated a CFTC-designated contract market.
Those dates describe market development, not a guarantee that prediction markets outperform options. No independent performance statistic establishing that prediction-market accuracy exceeds stock-option returns for company milestones is established here. Instrument choice should therefore rest on payoff definition, settlement, timing, risk and execution—not on an assumed accuracy advantage.

Choose a prediction-market event contract when the exact milestone is listed, the settlement source and authority are objective and transparent, and a binary payoff matches your thesis. Choose a listed option when you are deliberately forecasting the stock-price move’s direction, magnitude and timing, and can manage premium decay, implied-volatility changes, expiration and assignment. If the milestone is not listed, a prediction market cannot provide the direct exposure suggested by your question; an option can provide only an indirect price-reaction trade.
