Prediction markets trade event contracts, sportsbooks accept conventional wagers, and stock markets trade ownership securities. All three involve uncertainty and changing prices, but they differ in what you hold, how a payout is determined, who sets the trading terms, whether you can exit early, and which regulators apply.
An event contract is generally a derivative-style claim on an event outcome, often paying a fixed amount if a stated condition occurs. A sportsbook bet is settled under the operator’s odds and house rules. A stock represents part ownership of a company and may produce dividends, voting rights, and an open-ended market value. Those differences matter more than the fact that all three can gain or lose money.
The three activities in one comparison
| Question | Prediction-market event contract | Sportsbook wager | Stock trading |
|---|---|---|---|
| What do you hold? | A derivative-style event contract, commonly a yes/no claim | A wager governed by a sportsbook’s terms and settlement rules | An ownership security in a company |
| What determines the result? | The contract’s defined event outcome and settlement source | The sporting result or proposition under the operator’s posted rules | The stock’s market value, plus possible dividends |
| Typical payout | Often a fixed amount, usually $1, if the winning condition is met | An odds-based return stated by the sportsbook | No fixed payout; value can rise or fall and dividends may be paid |
| How is price formed? | Customer bids and asks in an order book | Operator-posted odds and market rules | Supply and demand through exchanges and brokers |
| Who is the main U.S. regulator? | The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for regulated event-contract markets | State and tribal gaming regulators where sports betting is legal | The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the securities-market regulatory system |
| Can you exit early? | Often, by selling or buying back before settlement, if a market and a willing counterparty exist | Only if the operator offers a cash-out or another permitted option | Usually by selling through a broker or plan while the market is open |
| Primary purpose | Forecasting, hedging, or speculation | Entertainment or risk-taking on sports outcomes | Ownership, capital growth, income, and long-term financial goals |
The table describes the usual structure, not a guarantee about every platform. Contract terms, liquidity, fees, permitted users, and settlement procedures must be checked before a transaction.

What a prediction-market contract actually is
The CFTC describes event contracts as “typically structured as swaps.” Their value comes from whether a specified event happens, rather than from ownership of a company or a physical asset. Many are binary: a “yes” contract pays if the defined condition occurs, while a “no” contract pays if it does not. The contract expires at a stated time or when the event concludes.

A price is a market quote, not a guaranteed probability
Suppose a market shows “yes” at 70 cents and “no” at 30 cents for a contract that pays $1 to the winning side. Those prices express what buyers and sellers currently accept, after considering information, uncertainty, fees, and available liquidity. They are often read as an approximate 70% and 30% market-implied likelihood, but the CFTC does not treat the quote as a guarantee. The event can still resolve against the higher-priced side.
Settlement is defined by the contract
The event wording, resolution time, and stated source determine whether a position wins. A trader should read those provisions before placing an order: a familiar headline or informal interpretation is not a substitute for the contract’s exact definition. The fixed payout is normally made only at settlement; before then, the position’s resale price can be higher or lower than the entry price.
How these markets developed in the United States
The CFTC’s 2026 explanation dates the first modern U.S. prediction market to the 1988 Iowa Presidential Stock Market. It identifies 2004 as the point when CFTC regulation began, following approval of the first designated contract market offering binary options. These dates describe the agency’s historical timeline, not a promise that every modern event market is federally available or approved.
What a sportsbook wager is
A sportsbook wager is a conventional bet on a sporting result, player or team performance, or another proposition listed by the operator. The sportsbook posts odds and settlement rules, accepts the wager under its terms, and determines the result using the applicable game and league information.
Odds are set by the operator, not an exchange order book
In a sportsbook, the customer generally chooses among the operator’s offered markets and odds. The odds may change as information arrives, but that process is different from a central order book displaying customer bids and asks. The operator’s rules determine accepted bet types, minimums, maximums, voided wagers, postponed games, and other contingencies.
Sports betting law depends on location
Legal sports betting in the United States operates under state and tribal regulation, according to the Associated Press. Each jurisdiction can set its own permitted sports, bet types, age rules, licensing conditions, tax treatment, advertising requirements, and responsible-gambling measures. A bet that is lawful in one state or tribal jurisdiction may be unavailable or unlawful in another. Location checks and age verification are therefore part of the transaction, not optional conveniences.

Cash-out is not a universal right
Some sportsbooks offer an early cash-out amount on selected bets; others do not, and an offer can disappear or change. Cash-out availability, limits, and pricing are operator-specific. Do not assume that a sportsbook wager can be sold to another customer or closed at a fair market price whenever you choose.

What stock trading gives you
Investor.gov defines stocks as securities that give stockholders a share of ownership in a company. The ownership claim is the central difference from both an event contract and a sportsbook wager.
Economic rights and possible returns
A common stockholder may benefit from price appreciation, may receive dividends if the company declares them, and may have voting rights. These rights are attached to the company’s equity structure and shareholder records; they do not depend on a single event resolving in your favor.
There is no fixed settlement date
A stock normally remains outstanding until you sell it, the company repurchases it, or another corporate action changes the position. Its market value can move continuously during trading hours and can fall substantially. Investor.gov warns that investors can lose money. Unlike a $1 event contract, a stock does not normally settle to a predetermined amount merely because a date arrives.
How stocks are purchased and sold
Investors can use a brokerage account, a direct stock plan, a dividend-reinvestment plan, or a stock fund. Public-company securities are registered with the SEC in most cases, and issuers generally file periodic reports. Brokerage transactions and related services can carry fees, which should be reviewed alongside the investment’s risks.

| Feature | Event contract | Sportsbook wager | Stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum outcome known in advance? | Usually yes for a binary contract: a stated fixed payout, often $1 | Usually yes for the wager’s odds and stake, subject to posted rules | No; market value is variable |
| What happens at the event or trading horizon? | The contract settles according to its terms | The operator grades the wager as a win, loss, push, or other result defined in its rules | The position remains unless sold or affected by a corporate action |
| Can value change before the endpoint? | Yes, as bids and asks change | Sometimes through an operator’s cash-out offer, if available | Yes, whenever the market trades |
| Can the asset produce ongoing income? | Not ownership income; the contract is resolved and expires | No ownership income; the wager is graded under betting rules | Dividends may be paid, but they are not guaranteed |
For an event contract, buying at 70 cents and receiving $1 at a successful settlement would create a gross 30-cent difference before fees. If the condition fails, the contract can settle at zero. That simple arithmetic does not remove liquidity risk, fees, or the possibility that the market quote moves against you before settlement.

A sportsbook’s return is calculated from the stake and the operator’s odds. A stock’s gain or loss is the difference between purchase and sale prices, adjusted for dividends and costs. These are different payoff systems, so a percentage return in one activity cannot be compared casually with a percentage return in another.
Price formation, counterparties, and liquidity
Event-contract order books
The CFTC says that, in most cases, order books show real-time customer bid and ask prices. A bid is the price someone is offering to pay; an ask is the price someone is willing to accept. Your order may execute immediately, execute partially, or wait until another participant accepts the price. The difference between the best bid and ask is the spread, and a thin market may make it expensive or impossible to exit quickly.
For CFTC-regulated markets, the agency says regulated intermediaries provide the venue and do not take the opposite side of the trade. Participants interact through the market rather than automatically wagering directly against the venue. That structure does not guarantee liquidity or a favorable price.

A sportsbook is the wagering operator. It publishes odds, sets the available markets, and applies its own acceptance and settlement terms. Its commercial model and controls differ from an exchange order book. A customer should not infer that an offered price represents a crowd-sourced probability or that another customer is taking the other side.
Stock-market execution
Stock buyers and sellers transact through brokers and securities-market venues. The quoted price reflects supply and demand, but execution depends on order type, market hours, liquidity, and the broker’s handling of the order. A highly traded stock may be easy to sell; a thinly traded security may not be.
Can you cash out before settlement?
Prediction markets: often yes, but only through trading
If an event contract has an active order book, you can often close a position before the event is resolved by selling it or buying the opposite side, depending on the platform’s design. The exit price is the current market price, not the eventual fixed payout. If no buyer is available, you may have to wait, accept a worse price, or hold through settlement.

Sportsbooks: only when the operator permits it
A cash-out button is an optional feature, not the defining property of a wager. The amount offered can be lower than the theoretical value of the bet, and the operator can limit which wagers qualify. Read the specific sportsbook’s terms instead of assuming that every bet can be closed early.
Stocks: sell through the brokerage system
A stockholder can generally submit a sell order during the relevant market session. The proceeds depend on the execution price, order type, liquidity, and fees. Selling ends your ownership of the shares sold, but it does not convert the position into a predetermined payout.
Who regulates each activity in the United States?
| Activity | Primary framework | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Regulated prediction-market event contracts | CFTC oversight of regulated event-contract markets | Whether the venue and contract are registered or otherwise authorized, the contract rules, fees, settlement source, and access restrictions |
| Sports betting | State and tribal gaming regulation where legal | Local licensing, location and age eligibility, permitted markets, tax treatment, operator rules, and responsible-gambling resources |
| Stocks | SEC securities regulation and the self-regulatory market structure | Broker registration, security disclosures, order and fee information, and the company’s filings |
Sports-related prediction contracts are especially unsettled in the United States. The CFTC describes federal oversight for regulated event-contract markets, while reporting by the Associated Press has documented continuing state and tribal disputes over sports-related contracts. The legal status can change through agency action, litigation, legislation, or a jurisdiction’s enforcement position. Check the current rules for your location and the specific venue before depositing funds.
Do you own anything when you trade an event contract?
No. Buying a “yes” event contract does not give you shares in a company, voting rights, a claim on corporate assets, or an ownership interest in the event organizer. It gives you a contractual position whose value depends on the defined outcome and whose life ends at settlement.
A sportsbook bet also creates no ownership interest in a team, athlete, league, or venue. By contrast, a stock represents equity ownership, with rights and risks determined by the company’s class of shares and applicable securities law.

Forecasting and hedging with event contracts
The CFTC identifies forecasting, hedging, and speculation as uses for event contracts. A business or researcher might use a contract to observe a market-implied expectation about an event. A participant with exposure to an event might use a position to offset part of that risk. Speculators seek a favorable difference between the purchase price and settlement or resale price.

Entertainment and sports risk-taking
Sports betting is commonly used for entertainment or to take a financial position on a game or proposition. The wager’s value is tied to the selected sports market and the sportsbook’s rules, not to an ownership claim or a continuously tradable security.
Investment and ownership with stocks
Stock investors may seek long-term capital appreciation, dividend income, voting participation, or a way to allocate money toward a financial goal. A stock can remain part of a portfolio for years, while an event contract or sportsbook wager is tied to a defined resolution or grading event.
Costs, fees, taxes, and risk controls
There is no single fee schedule across these activities. An event-contract venue may charge trading, settlement, withdrawal, or other platform fees. A sportsbook may embed its economics in the offered odds and may impose account or transaction terms. A stock trade can involve brokerage commissions, bid-ask spreads, fund expenses, or other charges. Review the current schedule for the exact account and product rather than comparing headline prices.
Tax treatment also depends on the instrument, jurisdiction, account type, and transaction history. Keep records of deposits, withdrawals, trades, settlements, dividends, and fees, and obtain jurisdiction-specific tax advice when the amounts are material. The fact that two products both show a gain does not mean they are reported or taxed in the same way.
Use risk capital
The CFTC advises customers to understand contract rules and fees, use only money they can afford to risk, and trade only with registered entities. The same discipline is appropriate for sportsbook wagers and stocks: set a loss limit, avoid borrowing for a position you do not understand, and do not treat an uncertain outcome as income.
Check liquidity before relying on an early exit
A quoted price is useful only if an order can execute at a tolerable cost. Check the displayed depth, spread, trading hours, and any platform limits. For a sportsbook, read whether cash-out is available and how the amount is calculated. For a stock, consider whether the security trades actively enough for your intended order size.
A decision guide for choosing the right mental model
| If your question is… | The closest fit is… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “What does the market currently imply about a defined event?” | Prediction market | The contract price comes from tradable bids and asks and resolves under stated event rules |
| “I want to place a bet on this game under listed odds.” | Sportsbook | The operator offers the market and grades the wager under its gaming terms |
| “I want part ownership of a business.” | Stock | The security represents equity and may include dividends or voting rights |
| “I need an exit before the outcome.” | Depends on the product | Event contracts may trade in an order book, sportsbooks may or may not offer cash-out, and stocks can generally be sold through a broker |
| “Which regulator’s rules should I start with?” | Depends on the instrument and location | CFTC, state or tribal gaming authorities, and securities regulators oversee different frameworks |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling an event-contract price a guarantee. A 70-cent quote is a market price that may approximate a 70% implied likelihood; it is not certainty.
- Assuming every event market is available everywhere. Access depends on the venue, contract, jurisdiction, registration status, and current legal developments.
- Treating a sportsbook like an exchange. The operator’s odds and rules govern the wager; there may be no customer-to-customer order book.
- Assuming cash-out is automatic. Early exit is common in some event markets, optional at some sportsbooks, and normally available for stocks through a broker subject to execution conditions.
- Confusing a contract with ownership. An event contract and a sports wager do not provide company shares, dividends, or voting rights.
- Comparing returns without including costs. Fees, spreads, odds, taxes, and settlement rules can change the result materially.
- Ignoring the resolution language. Read the event definition, deadline, data source, cancellation provisions, and payout terms before trading.
- Using money needed for living expenses. All three activities can lose money; use only risk capital.
Pre-trade checklist
- Identify the instrument: event contract, sportsbook wager, or company stock.
- Confirm that you are eligible by age, location, account status, and applicable law.
- Read the complete contract, wager, or security disclosures, including settlement or corporate-action rules.
- Write down the maximum possible loss and the conditions for a gain.
- Check all fees, spreads, odds, limits, taxes, and withdrawal conditions that apply.
- Decide whether you can exit early and exactly how that exit would execute.
- Verify the venue, sportsbook, or broker’s licensing and registration information.
- Use a position size and loss limit consistent with money you can afford to lose.
- Save confirmations and transaction records for monitoring and tax reporting.
Bottom line: different instruments, different obligations
Prediction markets, sports betting, and stock trading should not be treated as interchangeable versions of the same activity. An event contract is a tradable, usually fixed-payout derivative-style claim; a sportsbook wager is an operator-defined bet; and a stock is an ownership security with variable value and possible dividends. Before participating, identify the instrument, read its settlement or ownership terms, confirm the regulator and jurisdiction, and verify the fees and exit mechanics. Sports-related event contracts deserve additional caution because their U.S. legal treatment remains contested and can change.
