Prediction markets and sportsbooks both let you take a position on an event, but they quote and settle that exposure differently. A prediction-market contract commonly trades at a price between $0.01 and $1.00 that can be read as a market-implied probability; a sportsbook posts odds that determine a winning wager’s payout. To compare them fairly, use the same event, outcome, stake, settlement definition and exit point, then include every fee and the available buy-sell spread. Neither format is universally cheaper.
The short answer
In a prediction market, traders buy and sell event contracts. A yes/no contract that trades at 65 cents is commonly interpreted as expressing about a 65% market-implied chance of the stated outcome. If the outcome occurs, a winning contract generally settles at its stated payout, often $1; if it does not, it settles at $0. Your result depends on the price you paid, the price at which you later sell (if you exit early), transaction fees and the written settlement rules.
In a traditional sportsbook, you place a wager against the house. The sportsbook sets the odds and applies its own payout and settlement terms. The odds may be shown in American, decimal or fractional form, but they all specify how much a winning stake returns. The bookmaker’s pricing margin is reflected in the offered odds rather than itemized as an exchange commission.
That structural difference does not produce a universal winner on cost. A prediction-market quote can look attractive yet become less so after the spread and fees. A sportsbook price can have a larger or smaller expected value depending on the line, limits, promotions and rules. Compare the complete net result for an identical outcome, amount at risk and definition of “win.”

How prediction-market prices express probability
Yes/no contracts and the one-dollar settlement
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes event contracts as instruments tied to real-world outcomes. In its educational example, a yes/no contract priced at 65 cents corresponds to a 65% implied chance. The arithmetic is straightforward: a $0.65 price divided by a $1.00 maximum settlement equals 0.65.
That percentage is a quote from the market, not an independently verified probability. It can reflect participants’ information, forecasts, hedging needs, temporary order imbalances and trading costs. It is neither a promise that the event has exactly that objective probability nor a guarantee of a particular return. A contract can be mispriced, and the market can be wrong.
Bid, ask and order-book depth
The displayed last-traded price is not necessarily the price you can obtain for your entire order. An exchange normally shows a bid (what someone is offering to pay) and an ask (what someone is willing to sell for). The difference is the spread. If you buy at the ask and immediately sell at the bid, the spread alone creates a loss before any fee. Large orders can also consume several price levels in the order book, producing a worse average fill than the headline quote.
Liquidity determines how easily you can enter or exit. A contract may be theoretically sellable before settlement but practically difficult to close at a reasonable price when few traders are present. Check the size available at each price and whether the venue supports a limit order, a market order or both.
Holding to settlement versus trading out
When you hold a contract until the event is resolved, the settlement value is determined by the contract’s rules. If you sell earlier, your realized result is the sale price minus your purchase price and fees; the eventual event outcome may no longer matter to your account. This makes an exchange position different from a bet that is normally held until the sportsbook grades it.
How sportsbook odds determine a payout
The sportsbook is the counterparty
In the traditional house-banked model described in testimony to a U.S. Senate hearing, the sportsbook accepts the wager and stands on the other side. It posts a price, may move that price as information and betting demand change, and grades the wager under its house rules. The odds incorporate the operator’s pricing terms and margin rather than an exchange-style commission charged on every matched trade.
Sportsbooks can also offer exchanges or peer-to-peer products in some jurisdictions, but do not assume those operate like a conventional house book. Read the specific platform’s terms to identify who takes the other side and which fees apply.

American, decimal and fractional odds
Odds are different presentations of a potential return. American odds of +150 mean a $100 stake would produce $150 in profit if the wager wins, plus the returned stake. American odds of −150 require a $150 stake to make $100 in profit. Decimal odds include the stake in the total return: decimal 2.50 means a $100 stake returns $250 in total, including $150 profit. Fractional odds of 3/2 mean $3 of profit for every $2 staked.
These examples are illustrations of the formats, not current prices for any event. A real comparison must use the live odds and the sportsbook’s stated rules for pushes, voids, parlays, taxes and promotional credits.
Implied probability and bookmaker margin
For decimal odds, the simple implied probability is 1 divided by the decimal price. For American positive odds, it is 100 divided by (odds plus 100); for American negative odds, it is the absolute odds divided by (absolute odds plus 100). When you add implied probabilities across all outcomes in a market, the total commonly exceeds 100%. That excess is one way to see the bookmaker’s margin. It is not directly comparable to an exchange fee or spread, because the two products have different mechanics and settlement terms.
How are prediction market odds different from sports betting odds?
| Comparison point | Prediction-market contract | Sportsbook wager |
|---|---|---|
| Displayed quote | Often a price from $0.01 to $1.00 for a yes/no outcome; the price can be read as an implied probability. | Odds such as American, decimal or fractional numbers that determine the winning payout. |
| Who takes the other side | Other market participants generally trade against one another; a venue may match orders and charge a transaction fee. | The traditional model is house-banked: the sportsbook is the counterparty and sets the line. |
| Maximum settlement | Defined by the contract, commonly $1 for a yes/no contract. | Defined by the posted odds and wager terms; the stake may be returned with profit when the bet wins. |
| Main trading cost | Purchase or sale price, bid-ask spread, explicit transaction fee and any withdrawal or platform charge. | The odds’ built-in pricing margin, plus any stated wagering, withdrawal, tax or service charge. |
| Early exit | Often possible by selling, subject to liquidity, order-book depth and the available bid. | May be possible through a cash-out feature, but the offer is set by the sportsbook and can differ substantially from a fair value. |
| Settlement | Uses the contract’s written data source, timing and definitions. | Uses the sportsbook’s grading rules, which may define regulation, overtime, postponements and statistics differently. |
| Regulatory availability | Depends on the venue, contract and jurisdiction; U.S. sports contracts are contested. | Depends on state or national gambling law and the operator’s licensing in your location. |
Do prediction markets have fees?
They can. An exchange may charge a fee when an order is executed, and your effective cost also includes the spread between the price at which you buy and the price at which you could sell. Some access routes show a separate fee line at confirmation. Coinbase’s help material, for example, says its prediction markets are operated by Kalshi and that its order-confirmation page displays a fee breakdown. That disclosure describes that access route; it is not a universal fee schedule for every prediction-market venue.
Read the fee schedule for the exact account and market. Look for:
- Trading or execution fees charged on buys, sells or both.
- Whether the fee is a percentage, a fixed amount or tiered by volume.
- Any minimum fee that matters for small orders.
- Deposit, withdrawal, conversion or payment-processing charges.
- Whether fees are deducted from the payout, added to the order cost or shown separately.
- Rules for canceled, partially filled or expired orders.
Sportsbooks do not normally present a line item called “commission” on each bet. Their cost is embedded in the odds and may be supplemented by account, payment or withdrawal terms. A promotional credit can change the apparent return while adding rollover or expiration conditions, so compare cash value under the actual terms.
How much do prediction markets pay if you win?
Contract arithmetic
For a yes/no contract that settles at $1, the gross profit on a position bought at price p is $1 − p per contract if the answer is yes. If the answer is no, the contract settles at $0 and the amount paid for the contract is at risk. Multiply by the number of contracts, then subtract transaction fees and any other charges.

Using the CFTC’s illustrative 65-cent quote, buying 100 contracts costs $65 before fees. If the stated outcome occurs, the gross settlement is $100 and the gross profit is $35. If it does not, the settlement is $0 and the $65 purchase amount is lost, apart from any fee treatment. The 65% figure is an implied market belief in the CFTC example, not a guarantee that the trade has a 65% chance of winning.
What a sportsbook return means
For a sportsbook, the total return is the stake plus the profit specified by the odds. With decimal odds, total return equals stake multiplied by the decimal price. With American positive odds, profit equals stake multiplied by odds divided by 100; with negative odds, profit equals stake multiplied by 100 divided by the absolute odds. Subtract any tax, fee or stake amount that the operator’s terms do not return.
Do not compare the $1 settlement of one contract with the headline profit on a sportsbook bet without first matching the amount at risk. A 65-cent contract risks 65 cents to make 35 cents before costs; a sportsbook may risk a different stake to make a different profit. Normalize both to the same cash risk or the same potential loss, then calculate net proceeds.
Are prediction markets cheaper than sportsbooks?
No general conclusion is supported. Costs vary with the market’s price, liquidity, spread, exchange fee, sportsbook line, limits, promotions and settlement terms. A prediction market can have a low explicit fee but a wide spread. A sportsbook can show a competitive line but embed a substantial margin across outcomes. The only reliable answer comes from a matched, current comparison.
A fair comparison worksheet
- Choose the identical proposition. Specify the event, participant, date and outcome. “Team wins” is not identical to “team leads after regulation” or “team wins including overtime.”
- Set one risk amount. Decide whether you are comparing the same cash at risk, the same potential loss or the same total stake.
- Record executable prices. For the exchange, write down the ask for a buy, the bid for a possible sale and the available size. For the sportsbook, record the current odds and the stake required.
- Calculate gross settlement. Apply the contract’s $0/$1 or other payout rule, or the sportsbook’s odds formula.
- Subtract every cost. Include exchange fees, the spread incurred on entry and exit, sportsbook charges, taxes and any conditions attached to promotional funds.
- Check the loss case. State the exact amount lost if the outcome is wrong, the contract expires worthless or the wager is graded a loss.
- Check an early-exit case. If you might close before settlement, use the actual available bid or cash-out offer rather than the theoretical midpoint.
- Compare the rules and access. Confirm that the product is available and lawful for your location and that both products use the same event definition and data source.
How do prediction markets settle sports contracts?
Settlement is a contract-law question, not a matter of what seems intuitively fair. Read the market’s rule page for the official data source, the observation time, postponement policy, correction window and the authority that makes the final determination.
Coinbase’s help material gives a concrete example for markets operated by Kalshi: sports outcomes use official league results and the final regulation score. It notes that a “Second Half” market covers regulation time only and excludes overtime. A sportsbook may offer a similarly worded market with a different overtime or postponement rule. Two products that mention the same game can therefore settle differently.
Before trading, verify:
- Whether overtime, shootouts or extra periods count.
- What happens if a game is postponed, abandoned, shortened or replayed.
- Which league, competition or official statistics provider controls the result.
- Whether a later correction can change the settlement.
- When the result becomes final and when funds become withdrawable.
- How ties, no-contests and missing data are handled.
Liquidity, spreads and the ability to get out
A prediction-market position is not automatically liquid just because a quote appears on screen. Examine the order-book quantity at the price you need. A market order can fill across several levels; a limit order may not fill at all. If you must exit before settlement, the relevant number is the executable bid after fees, not the last-traded price or a displayed midpoint.

Sportsbooks are not exchanges, so there is usually no public order book. A cash-out offer, when available, is an optional price generated by the operator and can be suspended during fast-moving conditions. It may include a larger margin than the original wager. If no cash-out is offered, the normal route is to hold until grading.
Liquidity also affects information quality. Thin markets can move sharply on a small order and may not represent a broad consensus. A price that looks like a precise probability should be treated cautiously when the available size is small.
U.S. legal and regulatory context
The CFTC’s educational guidance says customers of CFTC-regulated exchanges should review contract rules, costs, risks and settlement procedures. It also states that customers are entitled to timely, transparent information about event contracts, including trading rules and contract terms such as payout, prices, who decides settlement and how the determination will be made.
Whether sports event contracts fit within federal derivatives oversight or state gaming regulation is being contested. The Associated Press has reported active litigation and disagreement on that question. The legal status and availability of a product can change by jurisdiction, contract and court or agency action; access on one platform does not establish universal legality. Confirm the current rules where you live and use only an account you are legally permitted to operate.
Sportsbooks face their own jurisdictional limits. A license in one state or country does not authorize activity everywhere, and geolocation, identity and age checks may apply. Do not bypass those controls with a false address or another person’s account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Market-integrity rules and enforcement
Regulation is also about conduct, not only access. In a February 25, 2026 advisory, the CFTC Enforcement Division described two cases involving trading based on a trader’s own candidacy and an employee’s likely access to unpublished material for a YouTube channel. The release described a $2,246.36 penalty and five-year suspension in the candidacy matter, and a $20,397.58 penalty and two-year suspension in the employee matter.
Those cases illustrate why exchange rules prohibit misuse of confidential information and manipulative conduct. They do not establish that all prediction-market trading is improper. Read prohibited-activity, position-limit and surveillance provisions before placing an order, particularly when you have a personal, professional or informational connection to the event.

Common comparison mistakes
Comparing different event definitions
A full-game winner, a regulation-time winner, a second-half result and a series winner are separate propositions. Match the time window and tie treatment before comparing a price or payout.
Using the midpoint as a guaranteed fill
The midpoint between bid and ask is an estimate, not an executable price. Use the side of the market you would actually trade and account for order size.
Ignoring the losing outcome
Some readers focus on the percentage profit and overlook the dollars at risk. State the loss if the contract settles at zero or the sportsbook grades the wager a loss, including nonrefundable fees.
Treating implied probability as certainty
A 65-cent contract is a 65% market-implied chance in the CFTC’s illustration, not a measured fact about nature. Sportsbook implied probabilities likewise include the operator’s pricing margin.
Assuming every venue uses the same fee or rule
Fee displays, settlement sources, cash-out policies and legal availability are platform-specific. Coinbase’s disclosure about a Kalshi-operated market should not be generalized to every exchange or sportsbook.
A practical decision framework
An exchange may fit when you value transparent contract pricing
Choose an event contract only after confirming that its rule page clearly identifies the outcome, data source and settlement time, and that the order book has enough liquidity for your intended size. The ability to sell before settlement can be useful, but it is valuable only when a realistic bid exists.
A sportsbook may fit when the posted wager is easier to understand
A sportsbook can be simpler when you want a conventional stake-and-payout ticket, the operator is licensed in your jurisdiction and the grading rules match your intended proposition. The odds still need to be compared with alternatives, and a familiar interface does not remove the risk of loss.
Neither format fits when the rules or loss are unclear
Do not trade until you can answer what event is being measured, who decides the result, when settlement occurs, how much cash can be lost and what all-in cost applies. If the product is unavailable or its legal status is uncertain where you are, stop rather than attempting to work around the restriction.
Responsible-risk checklist
- Use money you can afford to lose; both formats can produce a total loss of the amount at risk.
- Read the complete contract or sportsbook rule, not only the market title.
- Confirm fees, spread, withdrawal terms and any promotional conditions before submitting an order.
- Set a maximum stake and avoid increasing it to recover a loss.
- Keep records of entry price, exit price, fees and settlement for tax and budgeting purposes.
- Check current jurisdictional and platform availability before every new market, because legal and operational conditions can change.
Bottom line
Prediction markets quote tradable event-contract prices that can serve as market-implied probabilities, while sportsbooks quote odds that specify a wager’s payout. To decide which is better for a particular sports outcome, normalize the stake, use executable prices, subtract fees and spread, and verify that the settlement definition is identical. Because liquidity, pricing, rules and U.S. regulatory status vary, there is no evidence-based universal claim that prediction markets are always cheaper or that sportsbooks always pay more.
