The Acer Predator Helios 18 AI is a configurable, high-performance gaming laptop, but available testing does not establish that it matches a gaming desktop. In PC Gamer’s 2025 review, the PH18-73 test unit paired an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX with an RTX 5090 laptop GPU configured at 175 W. Its large dual-mode screen is a highlight, while size, cost and short unplugged gaming time limit its appeal as a portable machine.

How strong is its gaming performance?
A 175 W RTX 5090 laptop GPU alongside a Core Ultra 9 275HX makes the reviewed PH18-73 a high-end gaming laptop. The GPU’s stated power configuration is important context: laptop performance depends on the system’s power and cooling limits, the chosen game settings and the exact configuration. Results can also change when DLSS or frame generation is enabled; generated frames should not be treated as equivalent to frames rendered natively.
“Desktop-class” is best understood as shorthand for ambitious performance in a large laptop, not proof of desktop equivalence. A mobile RTX 5090 is a laptop component, and the cited reviews do not provide a controlled, matched comparison with a gaming desktop. A defensible desktop comparison would need the same games, settings, resolution and testing conditions, with power modes and both test systems identified. Without that, claims that this laptop matches a desktop go beyond the available evidence.

What is the 18-inch dual-mode screen like?
PC Gamer calls the tested 18-inch dual-mode 4K Mini LED panel a standout for SDR, praising its vibrant colors and deep blacks. The option to switch between 3840×2400 at 120 Hz and FHD at 240 Hz gives the screen two distinct operating modes, but changing modes required a reboot in PC Gamer’s review. That interruption matters if you expect to switch resolutions frequently.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

That is a test-specific observation, not a guarantee that every HDR scene or configuration will look the same. The screen’s size and resolution suit a mostly stationary setup better than a compact travel-first laptop.

How portable is it, and what is battery life like?
TechRadar describes the laptop as large and expensive. Its review unit had a 99 Wh battery, and the publication measured just under 90 minutes in its PCMark10 gaming battery test. That is a result from one review test, not a promise of typical runtime. Gaming unplugged is therefore limited; the laptop is better suited to moving between desks than to extended gaming away from power. See TechRadar’s review for its test context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Predator Helios 18 AI worth buying?
It makes the most sense for someone who wants a very large laptop screen and high-end gaming hardware in one machine, and who expects to use it mainly near a power outlet. Its screen and powerful GPU configuration are attractive, but the size, short tested unplugged gaming runtime and high reported prices make it a poor fit for buyers prioritizing light travel or long sessions on battery.

At the other end, Acer’s PH18-73-99A8 listing showed $6,999.99 and out-of-stock status at the time reported. Compare current prices for the exact SKU rather than treating either figure as a universal price for the family.
