For most Android weather apps, choose Approximate location. It is generally sufficient for city forecasts, radar, alerts and nearby-station selection while exposing less geographic detail. Choose Precise only when a feature genuinely depends on a very specific position, such as a hyperlocal sensor or a narrowly drawn alert boundary. Android 12 (API level 31) and later let you change this choice per app.

What the two Android location choices mean

Android’s precision setting controls how much geographic detail an app receives after you grant location access. It is separate from whether the app may use your location at all. On Android 12 and later, a runtime permission request can present Precise and Approximate choices when the app requests both fine and coarse location permissions.

Choice Android’s documented estimate What a weather app can normally do Privacy effect
Approximate About 3 square kilometers (about 1.2 square miles) for LocationManagerService or FusedLocationProvider Identify a city or region, select a forecast grid, load radar tiles, show warnings and choose a nearby observation station Shares a broad area rather than a near-doorway position
Precise Usually within about 50 meters (160 feet), sometimes within a few meters or better All approximate-location tasks, plus finer station selection and features that depend on a specific local boundary or sensor Shares a more detailed geographic position

Those figures are provider estimates, not guarantees. Building materials, satellite visibility, Wi-Fi and cellular availability, weather, device hardware and the app’s provider can all affect the result. “Precise” does not promise a perfect pin, and “approximate” does not mean the app receives no useful location.

Why approximate location is usually enough for weather

Weather services rarely need to know which doorway you are standing beside. They normally convert a position into a city, a forecast-grid cell, a radar tile, a warning polygon or the nearest reporting station. A broad area of roughly 3 square kilometers is generally enough for those operations.

City and regional forecasts

A forecast screen usually asks a server for conditions at a city, postal area or grid coordinate. Several streets of positional uncertainty will not change the forecast product the service returns. Approximate access therefore provides the weather information most people want without sharing a highly detailed location.

Radar and satellite maps

Radar imagery is displayed as map tiles covering a region. The app needs a useful map center, not a coordinate accurate to a few meters. Approximate location can center the map on your area; you can then pan and zoom manually.

Warnings and alerts

Weather warnings are commonly represented as polygons or broad administrative areas. Approximate access can place you in the relevant area for ordinary storm, heat, flood or wind notifications. A service may still ask for more detail if it draws an unusually narrow boundary, but the app should explain that requirement rather than treating precise access as mandatory for every screen.

Nearby observation stations

Approximate coordinates are normally sufficient to choose a nearby station. Precise access can improve the ranking where stations are close together, at different elevations or on opposite sides of a local boundary, but that is an optimization rather than a requirement for a standard forecast.

When precise can matter

Precise access is reasonable for a feature that truly depends on a specific point, for example:

  • Choosing among very closely spaced personal or neighborhood sensors.
  • Applying a local alert boundary that changes over a short distance.
  • Supporting a specialized outdoor feature that needs a detailed position to match terrain or an observation site.

Even in those cases, a well-designed app should offer manual city, postal-code or map selection when possible. That lets you use the feature without granting more location detail than you are comfortable sharing.

How the Android 12+ permission prompt works

The two-button precision choice appears only when the app requests fine and coarse location together. Android’s guidance says an app should not request fine location by itself; it should request coarse location when coarse information is enough for the use case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install or open the weather app. The app may ask for location when you first open the forecast or when you turn on a location-based feature.
  2. Read the requested purpose. If the app explains that it needs your area for local weather, that normally points to an approximate grant. If it describes a specific sensor or boundary, decide whether that extra detail is worthwhile.
  3. Select Approximate or Precise. On Android 12 (API level 31) and newer, both options can be shown when both permissions were requested. Choose Approximate for ordinary forecasts and Precise only for a feature that needs it.
  4. Choose the access duration. Depending on the Android version and the app, you may also see options such as while using the app, only this time or another duration. This controls when the app may read location; it does not make an approximate grant precise.
  5. Check the first result. Confirm that the forecast city, radar center and alerts are sensible. If they are not, search for a city manually or adjust the app’s location source before upgrading precision.

Android supplies only approximate information after an approximate grant, even if the app declared fine permission. An app cannot obtain a precise coordinate merely because fine permission appears in its manifest.

A practical decision guide

Your weather use Recommended setting Reason
Daily city forecast Approximate The forecast is tied to a city or regional grid, so a broad area is normally sufficient.
Hourly forecast for your area Approximate Hourly data is still delivered for a grid or station area rather than a doorway.
Radar map Approximate The app can center regional map tiles without a meter-level position.
General severe-weather alerts Approximate Most warnings cover polygons or broad areas.
Closest-station selection in a dense area Try Approximate first; use Precise if the result is materially wrong Precise can distinguish nearby stations, but it is not required in every location.
Hyperlocal sensor or very narrow boundary feature Precise, if you want that feature The feature may depend on a position within tens of meters or less.
Privacy-first use with manual city selection No location permission or Approximate Entering a city or postal code avoids continuous device-location sharing.

Accuracy: what the numbers do and do not promise

Android documents approximate location as an estimate accurate to within about 3 square kilometers (about 1.2 square miles) for LocationManagerService or FusedLocationProvider. Precise location is usually within about 50 meters (160 feet), and can sometimes be within a few meters or better.

These are not service-level guarantees for every reading. A phone indoors, in a dense city, near tall buildings or with limited satellite and network signals may behave differently. An app may also round, cache or map the coordinate to its own forecast grid. Consequently, changing to Precise may not change the forecast at all if both coordinates fall in the same grid cell.

Conversely, an Approximate result can occasionally place you on the wrong side of a small local boundary. If a warning, station or city is clearly wrong, first try selecting the location manually. Grant Precise when the app’s specific feature needs it, not simply because a more detailed number sounds inherently better.

Privacy, battery and data trade-offs

Privacy exposure

Approximate location reduces the geographic detail available to the app. It does not make the app anonymous: the app may still receive an area, and other data such as your account, IP address or manually selected city can reveal context. It does, however, limit the precision of the Android location value itself.

Battery and network use

Approximate location is not a guaranteed battery-saving mode, and Precise is not a guaranteed battery penalty. Battery and data use depend on how often the app requests a location, which provider it uses, whether it refreshes in the background and how it processes results. The Android permission choice alone does not establish a fixed battery difference.

Least-privilege default

For a typical forecast app, Approximate is the least-privilege choice: it supplies enough information for the core weather experience while limiting unnecessary detail. You can raise the precision later for a feature that demonstrates a real need.

Background weather updates and Android 10+

Foreground precision does not automatically grant background access. On Android 10 and newer, an app that wants to read location while it is not in use must separately declare and obtain ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION. Google Play restricts background location to apps whose core functionality requires it, so a weather app should justify persistent background updates and prefer visible, user-initiated refreshes when feasible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Background access never becomes more precise than the foreground grant. If you selected Approximate for the app, its background readings are approximate too. Granting background access therefore does not bypass your precision decision.

For users, a weather app can usually update when you open it, use a scheduled notification that does not require continuous location, or rely on a saved city. Consider “Allow all the time” only when the app’s stated alert feature genuinely depends on location while you are not using it.

Changing Approximate or Precise in Android settings

Android 12 and later allow you to change an app’s precision choice in system settings, even when the app targets an older SDK. Menu names vary by phone manufacturer and Android release, but the route is generally:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Location, then App location permissions (the label may be App permissions or similar).
  3. Select the weather app.
  4. Keep the existing access duration, then turn Use precise location on or off.
  5. Return to the app and verify the city, station and alert behavior.

You can also revisit the permission prompt from the app if it offers a location-permission control. If the switch is absent, the phone’s manufacturer may place it under a different submenu, or the app may not have requested both fine and coarse permissions.

Why Android may appear to turn off Precise

You changed the setting in the permission dialog

Android treats the choice as an app-specific grant. Selecting Approximate during a later prompt or denying an upgrade request changes what the app receives, even though location access itself remains allowed.

The app process was restarted after a downgrade

Android’s runtime-permission guidance states that when a user downgrades an app’s location access from Precise to Approximate, the system restarts the app process. The restart can look like a crash or can return you to the launcher. Reopen the app; the new precision will apply after it starts again.

Upgrading from Approximate to Precise does not restart the process according to the same guidance. An app should still re-check permission after either change instead of assuming its previous state remains valid.

The app targets an older SDK

The Android 12 codelab notes that the new precision options are not visible in the same request flow for apps targeting SDK 30 or lower. Android 12+ system settings can nevertheless expose your preferred accuracy. In that situation, use the app’s entry in Location permissions to set the precision, then relaunch the app if its interface does not immediately reflect the change.

What weather-app developers should implement

Request the pair of permissions together

Declare and request ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION and ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION together when the app has a legitimate reason to support both. Do not request fine location alone. If the core forecast needs only a region, request coarse access at the point where that feature is used.

Design a useful approximate-mode experience

Android Developers explicitly advises: “Your app should still work when the user grants only approximate location access.” A weather app should therefore:

  • Load the main forecast with the approximate coordinate.
  • Map the area to a city, forecast grid or warning region without demanding a meter-level result.
  • Provide manual city, postal-code or map selection when a result is ambiguous.
  • Explain the benefit of Precise only next to the feature that needs it.
  • Avoid blocking the core weather screen solely because the user declined Precise.

Detect the effective precision, not just the manifest

If Android grants Approximate, the app must treat the effective location as approximate regardless of the permissions it declared. The app should check the current grant whenever it resumes, after a permission result and after process recreation. It should select a lower-detail workflow rather than assuming a fine coordinate exists.

Handle the downgrade restart

Persist the selected city, pending navigation and unsent settings before requesting permission. When the process returns, restore that state and re-check the permission. This prevents a precision downgrade from losing a partially completed setup flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep background requests proportional

Ask for ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION only when location while the app is not visible is central to the feature. Explain the alert behavior, request foreground access first where appropriate, and ensure background operation never claims more precision than the foreground grant.

Troubleshooting common weather-app problems

The forecast shows the wrong city

  • Check whether the app is using the last saved city instead of the current device location.
  • Refresh while the app is open so it can obtain a new reading.
  • Search for the city or postal code manually and save it.
  • If a nearby-station feature still selects the wrong site, try Precise temporarily and compare the result.

The app repeatedly asks for Precise

The app may be requesting a feature that its developer has tied to fine location, or it may be failing to handle Approximate correctly. Grant Precise only if you want that feature; otherwise continue with manual location entry or contact the developer. A normal forecast should not be unusable solely because Approximate was selected.

Location works in the foreground but not for alerts

Check whether the app has separate background permission on Android 10 or newer. Review notification permission and battery restrictions as well. Background location remains Approximate when foreground access is Approximate, so changing the precision alone will not grant background access.

The app closed after changing to Approximate

A process restart is expected when Android downgrades Precise to Approximate. Reopen the app, confirm the permission under Settings and repeat the forecast or alert setup if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no Precise toggle

The app may not have requested both fine and coarse permissions, your Android version may use different labels, or the manufacturer may place the control elsewhere. Open the app’s Location permission page in Settings. If the control still does not exist, the app’s current permission request may support only one precision level.

Privacy checklist before granting location

  • Use Approximate for city-level forecasts, radar and ordinary warnings.
  • Choose “while using the app” or a one-time option when continuous access is unnecessary.
  • Use manual city or postal-code entry when you do not want to share device location.
  • Grant Precise only for a feature whose explanation matches a real need.
  • Review background access separately; it is not implied by foreground permission.
  • Revisit the app’s Location permission page periodically and remove access you no longer use.

Frequently asked questions

Will Approximate location make my weather forecast inaccurate?

Usually not for a city or regional forecast. Approximate access covers a broad area that normally maps to the same forecast grid, radar region or warning polygon. It can matter when the app must distinguish very close stations or a narrow local boundary; manual location selection is an alternative.

Can an app get my precise location after I choose Approximate?

No. Android supplies approximate information after that grant, even when the app declared fine permission. The app can ask you to upgrade for a feature, but it cannot turn an approximate grant into a precise coordinate on its own.

Does allowing Precise always use more battery?

No fixed battery difference is guaranteed. Usage depends on request frequency, provider behavior, background operation and the app’s implementation. The precision switch alone is not a reliable battery-saving control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I switch from Precise to Approximate while the app is open?

Android restarts the app process when the user downgrades precision. Reopen the app and let it rebuild its location-dependent state. Switching from Approximate to Precise is documented as not restarting the process.
