Pre-painted terrain is worth the premium when you need a coherent, playable Warhammer 40,000 table immediately. Unpainted terrain is the better value when you can assemble and finish it yourself, because it costs less up front and lets you control the colors, weathering, basing and conversions. A mixed table—pre-painted centerpieces combined with unpainted MDF or 3D-printed ruins—is often the most practical compromise.

The right choice depends on four things: your deadline, total budget, tolerance for hobby work and the visual style you want. The comparisons below separate the purchase price from the time and finishing work that can make the cheaper option more expensive in practice.

What you are actually paying for

A pre-painted set bundles three services into the box: the terrain itself, a factory-applied color scheme and the labor needed to make every piece presentable. Unpainted terrain removes the second and third services. You pay less at checkout, then supply assembly, priming, painting, weathering and basing yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because the terrain does not become cheaper merely because the box is cheaper. Your own time has a value, and a club, store or event organizer may value a consistent table more than an individual hobbyist does. Conversely, the ability to repaint a wall, add battle damage or match an army’s basing scheme can be worth more than the hours saved by a factory finish.

Price comparison: what the available figures show

A comparison dated 14 October 2026 describes a pre-painted set as containing the equivalent of two Battlezone sets. In that comparison, the unpainted equivalent is valued at €278, using Games Workshop product pricing as reported by Only Wargames Fans in 2026. The painted version is described as €42 more than that unpainted value. Those figures are a snapshot of the products and prices considered in that article, not a permanent price list.

Wargamer’s 2026 report places the unpainted Combat Patrol: Battlezone box at approximately $170 / £105 and says the ready-painted range launched at just over twice the equivalent grey-sprue price. The dollar and pound figures are regional examples, so taxes, shipping and local retail pricing can change the result.

Professional painting can erase the apparent saving. The same October comparison estimates €300–€600 to have an equivalent quantity painted professionally, excluding the terrain itself. That is an editorial estimate rather than a quoted Games Workshop service fee, and rates vary with the painter’s quality level, preparation requirements and backlog.

For a wider category benchmark, Warlord Games Europe’s 2026 catalogue lists 2 mm laser-cut MDF kits from €15.50 to €54. These are not Games Workshop 40K kits, so they illustrate the cost position of MDF terrain rather than a direct Battlezone substitute. Pre-painted HDF products appear separately in that catalogue.

Is the pre-painted premium worth it?

When the premium makes sense

  • You need a table for a fixed date. A store opening, club league or tournament can justify paying to remove assembly and painting from the critical path.
  • Several people will use the terrain. A shared collection benefits from a uniform finish that does not depend on one volunteer’s available weekends.
  • You want visual consistency more than personal authorship. Factory-painted pieces arrive with a coordinated palette and repeatable finish.
  • You dislike painting terrain. Terrain is large and repetitive; buying the finished version avoids a task that can otherwise crowd out painting armies.

When unpainted is the better value

  • You already own primer, paints and tools. The incremental cost of finishing the terrain is then mostly materials and time.
  • Your table has a specific setting. Industrial orange, icy blue, desert tan or heavily weathered metal may not match a factory scheme.
  • You expect to expand gradually. Unpainted kits can be finished in batches and added when your games grow.
  • You enjoy conversions. Cutting, magnetizing, adding signage or combining kits is easier before a finished surface has to be protected.

There is no authoritative published average for hobbyist labor hours, paint consumption or the total cost of finishing a full table. Do not treat a quick ruin-painting demonstration as a guaranteed table-wide schedule.

Quality and finish: what can and cannot be assumed

Pre-painted terrain provides a consistent baseline straight out of the package. That is its strongest quality advantage: every matching wall, floor and barricade starts in the same color family. It may still look uniform, however, especially if a narrative table needs different materials, grime levels or focal-point details. Hand-painted barricades, scatter terrain and weathering can break up that factory regularity.

The October 2026 price comparison states that its writers had not handled the kits. Consequently, mould lines, sprue attachment marks and factory paint consistency were not verified in that source. Inspecting the actual pieces, photographs from multiple buyers and the seller’s return policy is sensible before making a large purchase.

Unpainted terrain does not automatically have better or worse detail. It exposes the same mould, cut or print quality before you apply a finish, then gives you control over how much of that detail to emphasize. A quick tabletop job can leave some texture understated; a display finish can pick out rivets, cables and chipped edges but requires more preparation and skill.

Games Workshop defines its Battle Ready standard as: Battle Ready models have their main areas coloured and a simple finish on their bases. The same 2022 Warhammer Community guidance identifies Battle Ready as the minimum standard for events at Warhammer World. For terrain, that standard is a useful target rather than a requirement that every surface receive display-level detail.

Fastest way to paint a complete table

The efficient approach is a repeatable batch process, not a separate display project for every ruin. Finish all pieces at one stage before moving to the next, and reserve fine details for areas players will see most often.

  1. Clean and prepare. Remove visible mould lines, sprue tabs and flash. For MDF, dry-fit parts, sand rough edges and seal exposed fibers if the manufacturer recommends it. For resin or prints, follow the maker’s washing and curing instructions before priming.
  2. Prime dark. A dark spray primer hides gaps and gives recesses instant shadow. Work outdoors or in a properly ventilated spray area, and let the primer cure according to its label.
  3. Apply one broad base color. Use a large brush, roller or airbrush where practical. Coverage matters more than precision at this stage; leave the deepest recesses dark.
  4. Shade the recesses. A wash settles into panel lines, cracks and rubble. Apply it in batches and watch for pooling on large flat surfaces.
  5. Drybrush the edges. A lighter, mostly dry brush catches stone chips, corners and raised metal. Two progressively lighter passes usually add more readability than detailed line work across every panel.
  6. Add one accent color. Pick a repeatable element—warning stripes, doors, cables, lights or hazard panels—and apply it only where it improves navigation and visual interest.
  7. Base selectively. Add rubble, sand, tufts or flock to ground pieces and major bases. Avoid textures that prevent models from standing flat or block doorways.
  8. Protect and inspect. Check that every piece sits level, that doors and floors remain accessible, and that the finish will tolerate repeated handling before storing it.

A terrain guide demonstrates that spray primer, broad drybrushing and washes can take a ruin from grey plastic to a fully painted tabletop standard in under an hour. That is a technique example for a ruin, not a promise that an entire table will be completed in under an hour.

Games Workshop’s simple Battle Ready route uses base, shade and technical paints; Contrast paints combined with technical paints are another fast option. Choose the system that gives consistent coverage across a batch rather than switching methods for every piece.

How to customize pre-painted terrain without ruining it

A factory finish is a starting layer, not a permanent restriction. The challenge is matching the existing palette and sheen.

Low-risk additions

  • Apply a thin brown or black wash to recesses, then remove excess from flat panels before it dries.
  • Use a restrained edge highlight on the most prominent walls and platforms.
  • Add removable scatter terrain, barricades, posters, cables or objective markers in a coordinated color scheme.
  • Use weathering powders or carefully controlled acrylic chips on exposed corners.

Higher-impact changes

  • Repaint a single feature color across every matching piece so the change looks intentional.
  • Use oil or acrylic grime effects only after testing on an inconspicuous area; solvents can soften or stain some factory coatings.
  • Mask and repaint large panels when you need a new faction or environment identity.
  • Add magnets, removable signs or kitbashed components before sealing the piece.

Mixing factory-painted pieces with custom additions requires attention to color temperature, contrast and surface finish. A newly painted scatter piece can look disconnected if it is cleaner, brighter or glossier than the older terrain. A final unifying wash or matte varnish can help, but test compatibility first.

Material comparison

Material Typical cost position Detail Handling and durability Customization
Laser-cut MDF Low Medium High in the cited guide; assembly and edge sealing are part of the process High after sealing and painting
Injection-molded plastic Medium to high High Medium in the cited guide High; straightforward to match with Games Workshop plastic kits
Resin High Very high Medium in the cited guide; pieces are often heavier Medium to high; some products are sold pre-painted
3D-printed terrain Variable; marginal cost can fall after printer or maker setup Variable by design and print settings Depends on print material, wall thickness and design Very high; commonly supplied unpainted and ready to prime
Foam-board DIY Very low material cost Depends on the builder Variable and strongly affected by sealing Very high, with labor and finish as the trade-off

MDF: the budget table filler

MDF is efficient when you need a lot of coverage for relatively little money. Laser-cut panels assemble into large footprints and are easy to repaint. Seal exposed edges before painting if you want to reduce swelling and fuzzy fibers. Assembly time, glue drying and the need to keep floors square are the main costs that a low sticker price hides.

Injection-molded plastic: the compatibility choice

Plastic offers crisp repeated detail and the easiest visual match with Games Workshop scenery and models. It accepts spray primer, acrylics, washes and drybrushing predictably. The material generally costs more than MDF, and large kits can still involve substantial cleanup.

Resin: detail and mass

Resin is attractive for ornate gothic panels, mechanical clutter and deep surface texture. Heavier pieces are less likely to move during play but can damage models or boards if dropped. Wash and cure printed or cast resin exactly as directed by the manufacturer, and inspect thin parts for brittleness before gaming.

3D-printed terrain: expandable and unusual

3D printing is useful for unusual shapes, made-to-order additions and gradual expansion. Quality varies with the design, layer height, material and post-processing. A printed set can be mixed with other manufacturers’ pieces, but matching scale, floor height and wall thickness before printing a large batch prevents expensive surprises.

Gameplay checks before you buy or paint

Terrain is not only scenery. Games Workshop’s terrain rules use categories such as craters, barricades, debris, hills, woods and ruins. Evaluate each set against the way your group actually plays.

  • Stable footprint: pieces should not rock or slide when a model brushes them.
  • Model access: doors, ladders and interior floors need enough clearance for the bases in your collection.
  • Line-of-sight value: a table needs a deliberate mix of blocking ruins and lower scatter, not a collection of attractive but tactically useless walls.
  • Base thickness: added flock, rubble or cork can lift models and change whether a doorway or objective remains usable.
  • Storage: fragile antennas and tall towers need protected compartments or removable sections.
  • Repeatability: if a club uses the set, mark orientation or footprint limits so pieces are placed consistently between games.

A practical decision guide

Choose pre-painted terrain when

You need a playable table immediately, are outfitting a club or store, or value a consistent presentation more than the painting process. Budget for a few complementary scatter pieces and selective weathering if the factory finish looks too uniform.

Choose unpainted plastic when

You want high detail, Games Workshop-compatible styling and complete control over colors, damage and basing. It is the strongest all-round choice for a hobbyist who enjoys painting and expects to keep the table for years.

Choose MDF when

Filling a large surface on a tight budget is the priority and you are comfortable assembling, sealing and painting laser-cut kits. MDF is especially effective for industrial walls, hab-blocks and broad ruin footprints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose resin when

Surface detail and heavier, substantial pieces justify a higher spend. Confirm that your storage and gaming boards can handle the weight, and inspect thin parts before committing to a large set.

Choose 3D-printed terrain when

You want unusual architecture, made-to-order expansion or the ability to add one compatible piece at a time. Verify scale and print quality with a small order or sample before producing a full table.

Choose foam board when

Your budget is minimal and you want complete control over dimensions. It is a good route for a distinctive narrative board if you are willing to trade money for cutting, sealing and finishing labor.

Why a hybrid table often wins

Use one or two pre-painted centerpieces—such as a large ruin or fortified objective—as visual anchors. Fill the remaining board with unpainted MDF or 3D-printed ruins, then paint those additions to echo the anchors’ dominant colors. This approach puts the factory finish where it is most visible, keeps expansion affordable and gives you room to add narrative details over time.

Before finalizing the scheme, paint a test wall and one scatter piece. Compare them under the lighting used for games, check that model bases still sit flat after basing, and place the sample beside the pre-painted centerpiece. A small compatibility test is cheaper than repainting an entire table.

Protecting a table that will be played on

Flock and loose rubble wear faster than painted plastic because armies, dice and sleeves drag across them. Wargames Terrain Workshop recommends roughly a 50/50 water-and-PVA mixture for flocked surfaces, with a second application after the first has dried, to slow that wear. That guidance applies to the maker’s fibreglass boards; it is not a universal recipe for every material or adhesive.

Keep varnish thin on moving parts, avoid sealing pieces before washes have fully cured, and test any spray finish on a spare component. Store large sections vertically only when their joints and basing can support the load; otherwise, flat storage with padding protects corners and antennas.

Bottom-line decision

Buy pre-painted terrain when the value is measured in saved time, immediate presentation and consistent results. Buy unpainted terrain when control, lower purchase cost and the hobby process matter more. For most long-term collections, combining a few finished focal pieces with self-painted MDF, plastic or 3D-printed additions delivers the best balance of speed, price and customization.
