Practice the Awkward Bit is a browser app for rehearsing everyday difficult conversations: set a scene, choose how cooperative the other person should be, and try out what you might say. Gemma plays the other person, then gives a short reflection and an alternative wording. Its creator says Gemma 2 2B runs locally in the browser through WebLLM, rather than sending the conversation to an inference API.
What can you practice?
The app is aimed at people who find it difficult to get a first sentence out. Its example situations include declining an invitation, asking for something back, and joining a conversation. You set the scene and select how cooperative the other person should be; Gemma then role-plays that person while you experiment with replies.
After the exchange, the app offers one thing you expressed clearly, one suggestion, and another way to phrase your response. A retry feature lets you return to an earlier message and test a different reply. These are practice prompts, not scripts guaranteed to work in every relationship or situation.
What does a practice session look like?
- Choose a scene. Describe the awkward exchange you want to rehearse, such as turning down an invitation.
- Set the other person’s cooperation level. This changes the kind of role-play you face.
- Try your replies. Gemma plays the other person in the conversation.
- Review the reflection. The app points out something you expressed clearly, offers a suggestion, and proposes alternate wording.
- Retry an earlier reply if useful. Rewind to experiment with a different response.
For a warm decline that leaves room for future contact, the creator gives this example: “Thanks for inviting me! I’m going to stay in tonight, but I’d like to join you another time.” Adapt the wording to your circumstances rather than treating it as a universal formula.

How does the local Gemma setup work?
According to creator Sasivarnan R, the interface uses React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS 4, with Gemma 2 2B running through WebLLM in a dedicated browser worker. The app uses separate prompts for role-play and reflection; the reflection returns structured JSON, and the app checks that any quoted reply came from the user.
The creator describes local inference as keeping the conversation transcript out of an inference API and avoiding a per-conversation API bill. That is a description of the app’s architecture, not an independent privacy audit. The initial model download requires internet access, and the app is not a fully offline install.

The creator also says Gemma’s terms apply. Review the applicable terms before use, especially if your intended use depends on particular data or usage conditions.

The stated environment is a desktop browser with WebGPU. The app relies on the user’s hardware, but the creator does not specify supported browsers, operating systems, minimum hardware, or compatible computer models. That means a particular computer or graphics processor cannot be assumed to work; compatibility details are not established.

The creator’s post, published October 3, 2026, said the demo was private while awaiting access for judges. That was its status on that date and does not confirm whether the app is publicly accessible now.
How much confidence should you put in the feedback?
The creator reports testing model loading, replies, reflection, rewind, and save-and-restore in a desktop browser, and says tests, type checks, and the build passed. These are creator-reported results rather than independent verification. The same account warns that feedback can sometimes invent details. Treat suggestions as prompts to consider, not as authoritative judgments about what happened or what you should say.

Does the app save conversations?
Conversation memory is the default, according to the creator. Optional localStorage saving and text export are also described. Those features are distinct from the creator’s claim that the transcript is not sent to an inference API; neither statement, by itself, is a comprehensive privacy audit of the complete app or the device where you use it.
