Most FancyZones snapping failures come from one of five settings: FancyZones is disabled, the drag activation method is different from what you expect, Windows snap hotkeys are not overridden, the target app is elevated or excluded, or monitors use different DPI scaling. Work through those checks in order; each isolates a different class of problem without rebuilding your whole layout.
FancyZones is part of Microsoft PowerToys. Microsoft describes it as “a powerful window manager utility in PowerToys that helps you arrange and snap windows into custom layouts for improved productivity and workflow efficiency.”
Start by identifying what is failing
Before changing settings, reproduce the problem with an ordinary desktop application such as File Explorer or Notepad. Drag that window on one monitor and then try Win + an arrow key. Note whether zones never appear, appear but refuse the window, or work for ordinary apps but fail for a particular program. That distinction matters:
- No zones appear for any window: check that FancyZones is enabled and verify its drag activation mode.
- Mouse snapping works but
Win+ arrow does not: enable the Windows Snap hotkey override and choose the movement mode that matches your layout. - Only one program fails: check administrator elevation, popup or child-window settings, and the exclusion list.
- Only a multi-monitor arrangement fails: inspect DPI scaling and the option that allows zones to span monitors.
- A capture, virtualization, or window-management utility interferes: review known compatibility conflicts and exclude the conflicting app when appropriate.
Change one setting at a time and test the same window again. This prevents a working configuration from being obscured by several simultaneous changes.

Confirm FancyZones is enabled and choose the right drag activation
- Open PowerToys Settings.
- Select FancyZones in the left navigation.
- Turn on the FancyZones utility if it is disabled.
- Open the layout editor and make sure a layout is selected for the monitor on which you are testing.
- Drag a normal window while using the activation method described below.
FancyZones can show its zone overlay in three different ways. The checkboxes are independent, so the behavior depends on which combination you choose.

If zones appear only after pressing Shift, that is expected rather than a failure. If they never appear, test the immediate mode temporarily by clearing both activation options. If immediate mode works, re-enable your preferred gesture and test that gesture by itself. A mouse utility that remaps buttons can prevent the non-primary-button method from being detected, so use Shift as a control test.
Make Win + arrow move windows between zones
FancyZones does not automatically replace the standard Windows Snap shortcuts. To make the arrow keys move a window through your custom zones, open PowerToys Settings → FancyZones and enable Override Windows Snap hotkeys (Win + arrow). FancyZones must be running for that override to take effect.

For a reliable test, place a window in one zone with the mouse, then press Win + Right Arrow once. If nothing happens, confirm the override is enabled and that another utility has not claimed the same shortcut. If the window moves but takes an unexpected route, switch between Zone index and Relative position; that difference explains most apparently incorrect keyboard movement.

Run PowerToys as administrator for elevated applications
Windows applies a security boundary to applications running with administrator privileges. A non-elevated PowerToys process may be unable to manage an elevated window, so FancyZones can work normally everywhere else yet fail for that one program.
Microsoft identifies Windows Terminal and Task Manager as examples. Its compatibility information also lists HWiNFO64 and TeamSpeak 3 as applications that require elevated PowerToys for FancyZones interaction.

- Close any PowerToys Settings window and exit PowerToys from its system-tray menu.
- Start PowerToys with Run as administrator.
- Accept the Windows elevation prompt.
- Reopen FancyZones settings, verify that the utility remains enabled, and test the elevated application.
Running with elevation increases what PowerToys can control, so use it only when you need to manage elevated windows. If ordinary applications stop snapping after a change, first verify that PowerToys is still running; the elevation change itself does not replace the FancyZones activation and hotkey settings.
Allow popup and child windows, then inspect exclusions
Some programs do not present every window as a standard top-level application window. Dialog boxes, launchers, tool palettes, and other secondary windows may therefore ignore your zones even when the main window snaps correctly.
- Open PowerToys Settings → FancyZones.
- Enable Allow popup windows snapping if the failing window is a dialog or floating popup.
- Enable Allow child windows snapping if the failing window belongs to a parent application and is created as a child window.
- Open Exclude applications from snapping to zones and inspect every entry that could match the program.
- Remove the affected executable or matching name from the exclusion list, then test again.
Exclusion matching can be broader than it looks. Microsoft notes that an entry such as Notepad matches both Notepad.exe and Notepad++.exe. Adding the .exe extension narrows the match. If one application is unexpectedly excluded, search for a short name or a partial entry before adding more exceptions.

Use the narrowest rule that solves the problem. Enabling popup and child-window snapping globally can make more secondary windows eligible for zones, while removing an exclusion can affect every window whose name matches that entry. After each change, test both the main window and the dialog that originally failed.

Correct multi-monitor and DPI settings
FancyZones treats monitor geometry and DPI scaling as part of the layout. To use zones that span monitors, enable Allow zones to span across monitors and set all connected monitors to the same DPI scaling factor. Mixed scaling factors can prevent a spanning layout from behaving as expected.
Different scaling can also produce a visual edge mismatch: a window snapped to a screen edge may show a border a few pixels away from the physical edge. That offset is a consequence of the monitors reporting different scale factors, not necessarily a corrupt layout.
- Open Windows display settings and record the scaling percentage shown for each connected monitor.
- Use the same scaling percentage on every monitor involved in the spanning layout.
- In PowerToys Settings → FancyZones, enable the option that allows zones to span across monitors.
- Reopen the layout editor, assign the intended layout to each display, and test a window moved from one monitor to the other.
If you cannot use the same scaling because the displays have different physical sizes or accessibility needs, use separate layouts per monitor instead of a spanning layout. That avoids the cross-monitor DPI requirement while preserving snapping on each individual display.
Check for known compatibility conflicts
Other utilities can intercept window movement, redraw the desktop, or manipulate screenshots before FancyZones receives the event. Microsoft lists known compatibility issues involving VMware Workstation Player, Windows Virtual Desktop, WindowsFX, active-win, ShareX, Screenpresso, and Greenshot.

Do not assume every installed utility is incompatible. First close or pause one suspected application and repeat the same drag test. If FancyZones immediately works, the conflict is likely limited to that program or its integration mode.
For screen-capture conflicts, Microsoft documents a practical workaround: add the incompatible capture application to FancyZones’ excluded-applications list. This prevents FancyZones from trying to place that utility’s own windows, but it also means those excluded windows will not snap. Apply the exclusion only to the program that causes the conflict, not to a broad name shared by unrelated applications.

If built-in layouts work but one custom layout does not, the problem is probably confined to that layout definition rather than to mouse activation, keyboard control, or application compatibility. Open the FancyZones layout editor and select a built-in layout as a control test. If windows snap there, recreate the custom arrangement from the editor and assign it again to the affected monitor.

Make a backup copy before editing or replacing that file. A backup lets you restore custom layouts if a manual change produces an invalid arrangement. Keep PowerToys closed while moving a configuration file, then reopen it and confirm that the layout editor displays the expected entries. If the editor still shows a broken layout, remove that layout through the editor and create a new one rather than hand-editing unfamiliar fields.
Use a narrow troubleshooting path instead of resetting everything
The following sequence keeps the investigation focused on the window type and input method that fail:
- Test a standard window with the mouse. If no overlay appears, resolve the FancyZones enabled state and drag activation mode first.
- Test the same standard window with
Win+ arrow. If mouse placement works but the shortcut does not, enable the hotkey override and select the appropriate movement mode. - Test the original application. If only it fails, determine whether it is elevated, a popup or child window, or listed in exclusions.
- Test one monitor at a time. If single-monitor snapping works but spanning does not, match DPI scaling or use independent monitor layouts.
- Pause utilities that alter windows or capture the screen. If the failure disappears, add only the confirmed conflicting program to the exclusion list.
- Test a built-in layout. If it works while a custom layout fails, back up the custom-layout file and rebuild the affected layout in the editor.
This order distinguishes a global FancyZones configuration problem from an application-specific or monitor-specific limitation. It also preserves your working settings, because each branch has a separate cause and remedy.

When to stop changing settings
FancyZones is functioning when a normal window can be placed with the chosen drag gesture, the configured arrow-key mode moves it predictably, and the originally affected application behaves according to its window type and privilege level. At that point, further global changes are unlikely to help. Keep the working layout, activation method, DPI arrangement, and exclusions documented so a future PowerToys update or monitor change can be diagnosed against a known-good baseline.
