For straightforward charts, start with PowerPoint’s built-in chart feature. If figures are extensive or updated often, Microsoft recommends creating the chart in Excel and linking it to the workbook. For recurring work that needs specialized business charts or Excel-connected workflows, dedicated add-ins may be worth considering. Microsoft’s online presentation templates help with slide design, but they are not the same thing as reusable chart templates.

Which PowerPoint chart option fits your work?

Option Best suited to What it offers
PowerPoint charts Common chart types and one-off or occasional presentations Insert and format charts in PowerPoint; use Excel as the source when data is extensive or changes regularly. Microsoft’s chart workflow
Microsoft presentation templates Deck layout and visual consistency Downloadable presentation designs; a template is not necessarily a chart-specific design. Microsoft’s presentation templates
think-cell Recurring business presentations and specialized chart needs The vendor advertises more than 40 customizable chart types, templates, and Excel-to-PowerPoint reporting. think-cell product information
Mekko Graphics Business charts and workflows using Excel data The vendor describes more than 30 chart types, Excel-based chart creation, and links to Excel PivotTables. Mekko Graphics features

These descriptions are not a side-by-side performance test. Before choosing an add-in, check its current licensing, supported PowerPoint and Excel versions, and compatibility with your platform; those details are not established here.

1. PowerPoint’s built-in charts: the sensible starting point

For familiar chart types, you can create and format a chart without adding another product. In PowerPoint, choose Insert > Chart, select a chart type, then replace the sample figures in the worksheet that opens. Use the chart controls to adjust elements, styles, and filters. Microsoft’s instructions for adding a chart cover this workflow.

This route makes sense when the chart is straightforward and its data does not require a separate, frequently refreshed source. Microsoft’s Office chart-type guidance can help with selection, but available options may differ by Office application and version. Confirm the chart type in your own installation.

For large or regularly changing datasets, start in Excel

Microsoft advises: “If you have lots of data to chart, create your chart in Excel, and then copy it into your presentation.” If you want the slide chart to reflect updates to the workbook, link the chart to the original Excel file. This makes Excel the maintained data source rather than relying on a one-time copy. See Microsoft’s guidance on creating charts in Excel and using them in PowerPoint.

2. Microsoft presentation templates: for deck design, not chart reuse

Microsoft’s online PowerPoint presentation templates provide a starting point for slide and deck design. Microsoft says finished work can be saved as a PowerPoint file or PDF. A presentation template may help make a deck look coherent, but that does not mean it contains the chart you need or supplies a reusable chart style.

How to choose without overcomplicating the workflow

  1. Identify the chart you need. If a standard native chart covers it, begin in PowerPoint. If you require a specialized type, verify that the add-in supports it in your setup.
  2. Decide where the data should live. For extensive or frequently updated data, use Excel as the source and link the chart when updates should flow into the presentation.
  3. Separate chart styling from deck design. Choose a presentation template for slide layout; do not assume it provides reusable chart formatting.
  4. Check the recurring workflow. For add-ins, assess whether chart types, Excel connections, and template resources solve a repeated task—not just whether the feature list is long.
  5. Verify access before switching. Confirm current licensing, supported versions, and platform compatibility with the vendor and your organization.
