Choose a colocation rack by proving that the specific rack positions can receive your required continuous power and remove the resulting heat. Then size the number of footprints, clearances, cable routes, and expansion positions that those limits require. A facility’s advertised total megawatts—or an average kW-per-rack figure—does not prove that it can support a few unusually dense racks.
The practical question is not simply “How many kilowatts does one rack use?” It is whether power delivery, cooling, physical layout, resilience, and future capacity all work together for your actual rack-by-rack load plan.
What power density means in colocation
Rack power density is the continuous electrical load a rack position is designed and contracted to support, normally expressed in kilowatts (kW). In a colocation facility it is a site capability, not merely a nameplate value on your cabinet. The answer depends on electrical distribution, breaker and receptacle configuration, cooling capacity, airflow controls, rack location, and the provider’s operating rules.
The Open Compute Project (OCP) Colocation Facility Guidelines v4.0.2 classify maximum rack density as acceptable at 8 kW or more and optimum at 12 kW or more. Those are bands in that guideline, published in 2025; they are not universal guarantees or market-wide standards. A provider may support more or less at a particular site, row, or position.

For early design, Oracle lists 15 kW per standard server/network rack and 17 kW or more for a specialty, dense, or high-performance rack. Oracle labels these planning values, not a promise that every final rack mix will fit. Product-specific review can produce a higher requirement.
Why total facility capacity is not enough
Electrical and cooling systems respond to where heat is produced, not only to the arithmetic sum of all racks. OCP gives a useful example: a row of twelve 12 kW racks draws 144 kW and may be supportable, while three 36 kW racks plus nine 4 kW racks also draw 144 kW but may not be. The concentrated racks can exceed local circuit, airflow, or heat-removal limits even though the row total is identical.
Ask for assurance against your proposed distribution. A statement such as “the room has 10 MW available” does not establish that three adjacent positions can each run at 30 kW continuously, with the required redundancy, while neighboring racks remain within their thermal limits. Request a row- or zone-level commitment that identifies the positions covered, the maximum continuous load at each position, and the assumptions about adjacent racks.

1. Calculate continuous and peak electrical demand
List every server, accelerator, storage system, switch, optical device, fan, and rack accessory. Use measured or manufacturer operating figures where available, and separate:
- Normal continuous draw.
- Expected sustained high-load draw.
- Short-duration or startup peaks.
- Future equipment that will be installed during the next deployment phase.
Sum the equipment for each rack, then add an explicit allowance for network and support hardware. Do not hide uncertainty inside a single average. Providers need the highest credible continuous load at each position and the electrical characteristics behind it. If equipment telemetry is available, include observed sustained values alongside nameplate ratings so the provider can see both expected operation and the conservative design case.
2. State voltage, phase, and feed requirements
Two racks with the same kW can require different infrastructure if one uses single-phase power and the other uses three-phase feeds, or if their equipment needs different voltages and receptacles. Document the number of power feeds, connector type, circuit rating, and whether A/B redundant feeds are mandatory. Confirm whether the quoted kW is per feed, per rack, or the usable total after redundancy. A nominal rack limit that counts both A and B feeds together may provide less usable capacity than a figure stated per feed.
3. Map the load by position
Create a rack elevation or row map showing the planned kW for every position. Mark dense racks, empty positions, network rows, and any equipment that cannot share a row because of airflow or service constraints. This map is the basis for a provider commitment; an average rack figure is not. Include the proposed order of installation so the provider can test the first phase and the later, denser phase rather than approving only an abstract end state.

Power, cooling, and space are one decision
NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD planning documentation describes “the three main resource constraints in an air-cooled data center environment” as power, cooling, and space. A power limit can change the layout and cable paths; a cooling limit can force the same deployment across more rack footprints. Treat these constraints together rather than selecting a cabinet first and checking heat later.
Air cooling questions
- What airflow volume can the position receive and exhaust, and in which direction?
- Are hot-aisle or cold-aisle containment systems installed or required?
- Are blanking panels, side panels, brush strips, or specific rack doors mandatory?
- Can concentrated loads be placed next to one another, or must they be distributed?
Air-cooled capacity is affected by neighboring equipment and by bypass air. A rack may have adequate electrical service but still be unusable at its planned load if the room cannot deliver cool air to its inlets and return hot air without recirculation. Ask whether the provider’s airflow figure is a design maximum, a continuously supported operating value, or a value dependent on containment being installed and maintained correctly.
Liquid and specialty cooling
Published guidance does not establish a universal kW threshold at which liquid cooling becomes necessary. Ask the provider which air, rear-door, direct-to-chip, or other liquid systems are permitted, who supplies them, and what connections, leak detection, maintenance, and service clearances they require. A high-density deployment may need a different facility zone rather than a standard air-cooled rack. Confirm whether liquid systems affect insurance, maintenance windows, monitoring, or the provider’s responsibility for incident response.
Compare more lower-density racks with fewer high-density racks
| Factor | More lower-density racks | Fewer high-density racks |
|---|---|---|
| Facility support | Usually easier to fit within ordinary per-rack limits, but still requires row-level power and cooling validation. | Requires proof that each selected position, its local distribution, and its cooling path support the concentrated load. |
| Floor space | Uses more rack footprints and potentially more aisle and service area. | Uses fewer footprints if the site can support the density and required cabinet dimensions. |
| Cabling | Longer or more numerous horizontal and vertical cable routes may be needed. | Can shorten equipment-to-equipment paths, but dense racks may require larger overhead or underfloor routes and careful separation. |
| Resilience | Failure domains can be spread across more positions, but there are more cabinets, PDUs, and connections to maintain. | Fewer cabinets can simplify management, while a single rack failure may remove more capacity. |
| Expansion | May make incremental additions easy if adjacent positions and power are available. | Future growth depends on scarce high-density positions, cooling increments, and compatible electrical feeds. |
| Commercial comparison | More footprints can increase space and connection commitments even when each rack is easier to support. | Fewer footprints do not automatically mean a lower bill; high-density positions, special cooling, and reserved increments may be priced differently. |
There is no universal price-per-kW comparison across colocation providers. Request an itemized quote for the exact cabinet positions, committed power and feeds, cooling arrangement, installation work, and expansion reservation. Compare what is contractually usable, not a marketing rate detached from the rack map.

Choose fewer dense racks only when the provider commits to the exact rack distribution and the additional service, airflow, and redundancy requirements are acceptable.
Size the physical footprint and service area
Rack-unit height is only one dimension. Confirm external width and depth, door swing, cable bend radius, front and rear working clearances, overhead or underfloor pathways, and the space needed to remove heavy equipment. Include adjacent network, patching, monitoring, and spare-equipment positions in the plan. A footprint count that excludes these areas can understate the space required for safe operation.
NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD guide requires EIA-310-compatible enclosed 19-inch racks at least 48U high for that system and recommends cabinets measuring 800 mm by 1,200 mm to improve cable management and service access. Those are deployment-specific requirements, not universal colocation rules. A provider may offer a different cabinet size or prohibit customer-supplied cabinets, so obtain written approval before ordering anything.

Account for expansion space
Reserve adjacent positions only if the provider can reserve the matching power and cooling increments. A vacant rack without a committed circuit or thermal capacity is not usable expansion capacity. Ask how long the reservation lasts, what lead time applies to additional feeds or cooling, and whether construction or permitting dependencies could delay the next phase. Confirm that the reserved positions are physically compatible with the original cabinets and that the provider will preserve cable routes and service clearances as the row fills.

Facility rules can determine whether an otherwise suitable rack is accepted. Equinix customer installation guidance, for example, describes airflow-management requirements in its colocation environment. At the selected site, confirm:
- Whether the provider supplies the cabinet or permits a customer cabinet.
- Required aisle orientation, containment, blanking panels, and side panels.
- Allowed equipment depth, weight, door type, and cable-entry method.
- Rules for customer-supplied PDUs, busways, sensors, liquid systems, and leak detection.
- Who installs, labels, tests, and maintains power and cooling components.
Do not purchase a rack, PDU, or cooling accessory until the provider confirms compatibility and permission in writing. The facility’s dimensions and installation policies determine whether those items can be used. Include approval lead times in the deployment schedule; a technically compatible component can still delay installation if it requires a site inspection or special work order.
Use an evidence hierarchy when comparing providers
| Evidence type | What it is useful for | What it cannot prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Early planning value | Building a preliminary load model, such as Oracle’s 15 kW standard-rack and 17 kW-or-more specialty-rack figures. | The final rack mix, exact circuit arrangement, or site commitment. |
| Published facility guideline | Understanding general design bands, such as OCP’s 8 kW acceptable and 12 kW optimum categories. | Capacity at your selected rack position or for a nonuniform load. |
| Site-specific engineering confirmation | Validating the proposed rack-by-rack distribution, feeds, cooling method, clearances, and redundancy. | Future capacity unless expansion is explicitly reserved and contracted. |
| Service agreement or order document | Defining what power, cooling, availability, maintenance, and response obligations are included. | Unwritten assumptions made during a sales conversation. |
Use the hierarchy in sequence: planning figures help you size the request, facility guidelines help you identify possible fit, engineering confirmation tests the exact layout, and the contract defines what remains available after installation. If the figures conflict, ask the provider to identify the controlling value and the operating conditions attached to it.
Questions to put in the provider request
- Capacity: What maximum continuous kW can this particular rack position support? Is the figure per rack, per feed, or usable after A/B redundancy? What total power is committed to the row or zone?
- Distribution: Does the assurance cover our rack-by-rack load map, including the densest adjacent positions, rather than a uniform average?
- Cooling: Which cooling method and airflow capacity support the load? What containment, blanking, door, or liquid-cooling controls are required?
- Electrical details: Which voltages, phases, circuits, receptacles, and redundant paths are available, and what happens during maintenance or a component failure?
- Physical fit: What cabinet width, depth, height, weight rating, front/rear clearance, cable route, and adjacent-equipment rules apply?
- Operations: Who installs and maintains PDUs, sensors, containment, and any customer-supplied equipment? What inspections or approval steps are required?
- Expansion: Can adjacent rack space and matching power and cooling increments be reserved? What lead time, construction work, and pricing changes apply?
- Contract coverage: Which power and cooling values, redundancy levels, and operating conditions are explicitly covered by the service agreement?
A practical selection workflow
- Build the rack map. Record continuous, peak, and planned future loads for every position, plus voltage, phase, feeds, and equipment dimensions.
- Set an engineering margin. Keep the margin visible rather than treating the provider’s maximum as your normal operating target. The required margin depends on your equipment and operating policy; no universal percentage is established by the cited guidance.
- Request a location-specific design. Send the map to each provider and require confirmation for the exact row, rack positions, airflow direction, and neighboring loads.
- Check the physical plan. Overlay cabinet dimensions, service clearances, cable routes, network positions, containment, and equipment-removal paths.
- Test failure and maintenance cases. Verify what load remains available when a feed, cooling unit, or distribution component is offline, and whether the stated capacity is still valid.
- Contract the assumptions. Put usable kW, feed configuration, cooling method, redundancy, clearances, installation rules, and expansion reservations in the order or service agreement.
- Revalidate before shipping equipment. Confirm that the final bill of materials has not changed the rack map, weight, airflow, connector, or heat load.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the room average
An average kW-per-rack number conceals dense positions. Submit the actual distribution and obtain a written response for the proposed rack mix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEquating electrical capacity with cooling capacity
A circuit can deliver power that the room cannot remove as heat. Require separate electrical and thermal confirmation for the same rack location.
Ignoring service clearances
A cabinet that fits on a floor plan may block doors, cable bends, hot-air returns, or equipment removal. Include working clearances and adjacent infrastructure before counting footprints.

Assuming empty space is expansion capacity
Unoccupied positions do not guarantee future circuits, cooling, or construction availability. Reserve the increments contractually and document lead times.
Buying equipment before approval
Rack dimensions, PDUs, airflow accessories, and liquid systems can conflict with site rules. Obtain provider approval before purchase.
Quoting a density without its conditions
A headline kW figure may depend on a particular cabinet, feed arrangement, containment system, or neighboring-load pattern. Record those conditions beside every figure in your comparison so two offers are not treated as equivalent when they are not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line for your rack decision
Start with the rack-by-rack load map, not a facility average. Use OCP’s 8 kW and 12 kW bands and Oracle’s 15 kW and 17 kW-or-more figures as planning references only. The deciding evidence is a site-specific commitment that covers continuous power, heat removal, load distribution, cabinet and service requirements, redundancy, and expansion. If a provider cannot validate those details for the proposed positions, the quoted density is a planning claim—not capacity you can safely deploy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 8 kW per rack enough for a colocation deployment?
OCP classifies at least 8 kW as an acceptable maximum-density band and at least 12 kW as optimum in its 2025 guideline. Those bands are reference points, not guarantees. Compare them with your rack map and obtain confirmation for the exact positions, feeds, cooling path, and neighboring loads.
Should I plan around Oracle’s 15 kW or 17 kW figures?
Oracle presents 15 kW for a standard server or network rack and 17 kW or more for a specialty, dense, or high-performance rack as early-design planning values. Use them to start a model, then replace them with product-specific loads and a site-specific engineering commitment.
Can a facility with 144 kW available support any 144 kW rack mix?
No. OCP’s example contrasts twelve 12 kW racks with three 36 kW racks plus nine 4 kW racks. The totals are both 144 kW, but concentrated racks can exceed local electrical or thermal limits. Request validation of the rack-by-rack distribution.

When does liquid cooling become mandatory?
No universal kW threshold is established. Ask the provider whether air, rear-door, direct-to-chip, or another liquid system is allowed at the selected location, and confirm connections, leak detection, maintenance, and service-clearance requirements.
Does an empty adjacent rack count as expansion capacity?
Not by itself. Expansion requires reserved space plus matching power and cooling increments. Confirm reservation duration, lead time, construction dependencies, and contractual coverage.
Can I bring my own rack, PDU, or cooling accessory?
Only if the site permits it. Confirm cabinet dimensions, airflow controls, electrical interfaces, installation responsibility, inspection steps, and written compatibility approval before purchasing equipment.
What rack dimensions should I specify?
Use the equipment’s actual requirements and the provider’s rules. For example, NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD guidance calls for EIA-310-compatible enclosed 19-inch racks at least 48U high and recommends 800 mm by 1,200 mm cabinets for cable management and service access. These requirements are deployment-specific, not universal.
How much power margin should I add?
The cited guidance does not set a universal percentage. Keep your margin explicit, distinguish continuous from peak demand, and ask the provider to validate the operating and failure cases for your equipment and policy.
How can I compare colocation pricing for different densities?
There is no universal price-per-kW benchmark. Request itemized, site-specific quotes and compare the contractually usable power, feeds, cooling arrangement, cabinet and service space, installation obligations, and reserved expansion increments rather than comparing headline density alone.
The Bottom Line
Choose the rack layout that a provider can validate at the exact positions you will use. Density numbers are planning aids; contracted power, cooling, airflow, clearances, redundancy, and expansion reservations determine whether the deployment is actually supportable.
