Choose a power bank by matching its usable capacity and output to the devices you carry, then check its watt-hour (Wh) rating before flying. A USB-C label or a large milliamp-hour (mAh) number alone does not tell you whether it will charge your laptop quickly—or whether it meets your airline’s rules.
Start with the devices you need to charge
List the phones, tablets, or laptops you plan to charge and how long you expect to be away from an outlet. Then compare each power bank’s capacity, output, ports, and compatibility against those needs. More stored energy can mean more size and weight, so a larger bank is not automatically the better everyday choice.
Capacity: compare mAh carefully
Power banks are commonly advertised in milliamp-hours, but mAh figures do not show energy by themselves unless you also know the voltage. For air-travel limits, use the bank’s marked Wh rating whenever it is available. If only mAh is listed, the FAA’s conversion is: Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × voltage. Use the battery voltage specified for that product rather than assuming one. The FAA explains the calculation in its passenger battery guidance.
Output: check what your device can accept
A power bank’s advertised maximum output is not a promise that every connected device will charge at that power. USB Power Delivery (USB PD) negotiates power between compatible devices; the bank, device, cable, and selected port all affect the result. USB-IF describes PD as flexible power delivery over USB Type-C. Its page discusses capabilities up to 240 W for capable full-featured USB-C cables and connectors under PD 3.1; that is a standard-level maximum, not a claim that an individual bank supports it. USB-IF’s document library lists USB PD Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2 dated September 14, 2026. See the USB-IF USB Power Delivery overview and document library.

For a laptop, check its required input power and charging protocol against the bank’s specifications. A phone-oriented bank with low output may charge a laptop slowly or may not provide useful charging while the laptop is in use. Confirm port-level output, supported protocols, and cable ratings for the exact devices you intend to connect.
Compare power banks by the specifications that matter
When comparing models, use the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact version being sold. Check these points rather than relying on a headline capacity or a generic USB-C claim:

| Power-bank rating | FAA passenger guidance |
|---|---|
| 0–100 Wh | Allowed without airline approval; carry-on only. |
| 101–160 Wh | Airline approval required; no more than two spare lithium-ion batteries in this range per passenger. |
| More than 160 Wh | Not allowed on passenger aircraft. |
These are FAA rules for the stated passenger guidance, not a guarantee that every airline or international itinerary will accept a bank. Airlines and international requirements may be stricter. The International Civil Aviation Organization announced new power-bank specifications effective March 27, 2026; check your operating airline and route for current implementation details. Review the FAA’s battery guidance and ICAO announcement before travel.
Check a rating when only mAh is shown
To calculate Wh, divide mAh by 1,000 to convert to amp-hours, then multiply by the battery voltage. For example, the calculation requires both the mAh figure and the product’s specified voltage; a mAh number by itself is insufficient. If the voltage or Wh rating is unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than using an assumed voltage to decide whether the bank meets a flight limit.

Keep the bank protected from damage and short circuit, and follow the product’s safety documentation. Do not pack a known damaged battery for travel. If a bank is swollen, recalled, unusually hot, or otherwise damaged, stop using it and consult the manufacturer and relevant authority. The FAA’s lithium-battery PackSafe guidance, last updated August 11, 2026, advises travelers to check applicable safety information before packing.
