Potassium-based salt substitutes lower sodium by replacing part of sodium chloride with potassium chloride. “Reduced-sodium salt” is only a product description; it does not tell you what replaced the sodium chloride or how much sodium was removed. Compare the ingredient list, serving size, sodium, and potassium on the current Nutrition Facts panel. Potassium-enriched products may modestly lower blood pressure, but they can be unsafe for people with impaired potassium excretion or medicines that raise potassium.
The short answer: these terms are not interchangeable
Regular table salt is primarily sodium chloride. A potassium-based substitute is a blend in which some sodium chloride is replaced with potassium chloride, sometimes with flavoring agents to make the taste more familiar. That formulation is the reason it can reduce sodium while retaining a salty flavor.
Reduced-sodium salt does not identify a single recipe. One product may use potassium chloride; another may use a different blend, a smaller amount of sodium chloride, or flavoring ingredients. The phrase alone does not establish the percentage of sodium removed, the amount of potassium added, or whether the product is appropriate for you.

What each label term means
Regular table salt
Conventional table salt is mostly sodium chloride. Its sodium content is high because sodium chloride is the source of the salty taste. Iodized versions also contain a small amount of an iodine compound; that addition does not change the basic sodium-versus-potassium distinction.
Potassium-based salt substitute
Potassium-based substitutes partially replace sodium chloride with potassium chloride. The 2025 adult blood-pressure guideline describes this category as products containing a partial sodium-chloride replacement, sometimes with flavoring agents. The replacement can be expressed as a percentage of the blend, but formulas differ, so a product’s own label is more useful than the category name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn an ingredient statement, potassium chloride may appear directly. Under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 2020 guidance, manufacturers may use “potassium salt” as an alternate name for potassium chloride under the conditions described by the agency. “Potassium salt” is therefore not a mysterious third mineral; in this labeling context it refers to potassium chloride.
Reduced-sodium salt
“Reduced-sodium” is a product-level claim, not a universal formulation. It tells you that the manufacturer presents the item as lower in sodium than a reference product, but it does not, by itself, tell you the reference, the exact reduction, or the replacement ingredient. Read the Nutrition Facts panel rather than assuming that every reduced-sodium salt contains potassium.

How to compare two products at the shelf
Use the same serving size whenever possible. If the products use different serving sizes, calculate or otherwise account for the difference before deciding that one is lower in sodium. A tiny stated serving can make a number look favorable even when a person uses substantially more.
| Comparison point | Potassium-based substitute | Product labeled “reduced-sodium salt” | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary blend | Some sodium chloride is replaced by potassium chloride; flavoring agents may also be present. | Not established by the phrase alone. | Read every ingredient in order of predominance. |
| Sodium | Usually lower than an otherwise comparable regular-salt product, but the amount varies. | Reduction and reference product vary by formulation. | Compare milligrams per serving and serving size. |
| Potassium | Added potassium is expected, although the amount varies by blend. | May contain potassium, another ingredient, or no potassium-based replacement. | Check potassium on Nutrition Facts and the ingredient list. |
| Taste in cooking | May taste similar to sodium chloride; a bitter aftertaste is possible when heated. | Depends on the actual ingredients and cooking method. | Look for use directions and test a small portion first. |
| Medical suitability | Requires caution with kidney disease or medicines that reduce potassium excretion. | Cannot be judged from the front label; potassium content determines much of the concern. | Ask a clinician or pharmacist when potassium is medically relevant. |
Do not rank products by the words “natural,” “light,” or “reduced” on the front panel. Ingredient order and the two mineral amounts are the decision-making evidence.
What the blood-pressure evidence shows
The 2025 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association adult blood-pressure guideline reports that, compared with regular table salt, potassium-enriched salt substitutes are associated with an approximate 5 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure and 1.5 mm Hg reduction in diastolic blood pressure. The average varies by population and by how much sodium is replaced. It is an estimate across evidence, not a guaranteed change for an individual or for every product sold under a reduced-sodium label.
The guideline highlights a large cluster-randomized trial of 20,995 adults in China. Participants either had a history of stroke or were at least 60 years old with uncontrolled blood pressure. The intervention salt contained 75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride; the comparison group used regular salt. In that trial context, the guideline reports a 3.3 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure and relative reductions of 12% to 14% in stroke, major adverse cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality. The trial did not show an increase in hyperkalemia in that population.
Those results should be read with their boundaries intact. Much of the trial evidence comes from East Asia, products in the studied ratios have had limited U.S. availability, and taste and hyperkalemia remain practical limitations. A product with a different potassium percentage, a different diet, or a different medical population may not produce the same result.

The intervention is most likely to matter when it replaces salt that a person adds while cooking or at the table. It cannot remove sodium already present in bread, sauces, canned foods, snacks, restaurant meals, or other prepared foods.

Healthy kidneys normally remove excess potassium. When kidney function is impaired, or when a medicine reduces potassium excretion, adding potassium chloride can raise blood potassium to a dangerous level. The 2025 guideline specifically identifies chronic kidney disease and medicines such as potassium-sparing diuretics as situations in which hyperkalemia risk matters.
The American Heart Association advises people with kidney disease or medicines that affect potassium to discuss salt substitutes with a health professional. That advice applies even when the package advertises a lower sodium number.
Ask before using a potassium-based product if you have
- chronic kidney disease, reduced kidney function, or a history of abnormal potassium results;
- a condition for which your clinician has told you to restrict potassium;
- use of a potassium-sparing diuretic or another medicine that can increase potassium;
- recent changes in blood-pressure, heart, or kidney medicines; or
- uncertainty about whether a prescribed medicine affects potassium handling.
A pharmacist can check the medicine list, while a clinician can interpret kidney function and laboratory results. Do not stop a prescribed medicine to make a salt substitute possible, and do not assume that a small amount is harmless without professional advice.
Taste, heat, and how to make a switch
Potassium salt can taste similar to sodium chloride, but the American Heart Association notes that a bitter aftertaste may become more noticeable when it is heated. Because no single formulation represents the entire category, a product that works well in a cold salad may not taste the same in a simmered sauce.

- Check safety first. If kidney disease, abnormal potassium, or a potassium-affecting medicine applies to you, obtain professional advice before buying a potassium-containing product.
- Read the full label. Record the serving size, sodium, potassium, and ingredients. Look for sodium chloride and potassium chloride, including “potassium salt” where that alternate name is used.
- Match the product to the use. Decide whether you want to season food at the table, mix it into cold foods, or cook with it. Heat can make bitterness more apparent.
- Test a small portion. Use the substitute in one dish rather than changing every recipe at once. This lets you identify an aftertaste without wasting a full meal.
- Use other flavor sources. Herbs, spices, citrus, vinegar, garlic, onion, and unsalted aromatics can reduce the amount of any salt blend needed.
- Track the rest of the diet. Keep checking packaged and restaurant foods; a successful shaker swap does not offset a high-sodium prepared-food pattern.
- Recheck the label when you repurchase. Manufacturers can change a formula, serving size, or Nutrition Facts panel. Use the current package rather than an old comparison.
Why a salt-shaker change is only one part of sodium reduction
An FDA document published in 2020 reported that people in the United States consumed an average of 3,400 milligrams of sodium per day, nearly 50% above the 2,300 mg/day federal limit cited in that document. The same FDA material reported that over 70% of sodium consumed comes from processed and prepared foods.
Those figures explain why a potassium-based substitute can be useful but incomplete. If most of your sodium comes from deli foods, packaged meals, sauces, soups, breads, snacks, or restaurant dishes, changing the salt used at home addresses only the portion you control directly. Compare labels on those foods, choose lower-sodium versions, rinse applicable canned foods, and ask restaurants about preparation when practical.
Do not compensate for a salt substitute’s weaker taste by adding a larger quantity. More of a lower-sodium product can still deliver substantial sodium, and a potassium-containing product can deliver more potassium than intended.

2020 alternate-name guidance
In final guidance issued in 2020, the FDA said it intended to exercise enforcement discretion for using “potassium salt” instead of “potassium chloride” in ingredient statements under the conditions described in the guidance. The agency explained that the policy could help consumers recognize potassium chloride as a salt substitute while supporting its Nutrition Innovation Strategy. The practical lesson is to treat the two terms as connected when you read a U.S. ingredient list, not as evidence of two unrelated additives.

Decision guide: which label deserves your attention?
Choose a potassium-based option only after a safety check
If your clinician has not identified a potassium restriction, you can compare a potassium-based product’s sodium reduction and taste for the foods you season. If kidney function or medication could affect potassium, obtain individualized advice first rather than relying on a generic “reduced-sodium” promise.
Treat an unspecified reduced-sodium label as a question, not an answer
Start with the ingredients. If potassium chloride is present, evaluate the potassium amount and apply the same safety check. If it is absent, determine what else lowers sodium and whether the resulting sodium number is meaningful at the serving size you actually use.
Keep regular salt in perspective
Regular salt may be the simplest taste reference, but it provides no sodium reduction. If you use it, measure it and concentrate on the larger sources of sodium in prepared and restaurant foods. A gradual reduction can help your palate adapt without assuming that one substitute fits every recipe.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Mistake: assuming every reduced-sodium salt contains potassium. Correction: verify potassium chloride and the potassium amount on the label.
- Mistake: comparing milligrams without comparing serving sizes. Correction: normalize the serving or compare the amount you actually use.
- Mistake: treating “potassium salt” as a separate, unknown ingredient. Correction: in the FDA’s U.S. labeling guidance, it is an alternate name for potassium chloride under specified conditions.
- Mistake: assuming a successful trial guarantees your result. Correction: keep the guideline’s averages, population, 75/25 blend, and East Asian evidence context in view.
- Mistake: ignoring kidney disease or medicines. Correction: ask a clinician or pharmacist before adding potassium chloride.
- Mistake: using a substitute only in a high-sodium diet. Correction: review packaged and restaurant foods, which contribute much of total intake.
- Mistake: judging taste from one preparation. Correction: test the product in the cooking method you actually use; heating may reveal bitterness.
- Mistake: assuming the FDA’s 2026 rule changed every product. Correction: regard the rule as permission for manufacturers and read each current package.
What to record when comparing products
A short label log can prevent misleading comparisons. For each product, note:
- brand-independent product name and purchase date;
- serving size and the amount you normally use;
- sodium per listed serving;
- potassium per listed serving;
- the first several ingredients, especially sodium chloride and potassium chloride;
- whether the food will be eaten cold or heated; and
- any clinician-provided potassium or sodium limits.
This approach is more reliable than choosing by a package color or a single front-panel claim. It also makes it easier to notice when a reformulated product no longer matches the one you previously used.
Bottom line for shoppers
Potassium-based salt substitutes are a specific sodium-reduction strategy: partial replacement of sodium chloride with potassium chloride. “Reduced-sodium salt” is broader and requires label inspection. The 2025 blood-pressure guideline reports a modest average benefit for potassium-enriched substitutes versus regular salt, including results from a large 75% sodium-chloride/25% potassium-chloride trial, but the evidence and product availability vary. Kidney disease and potassium-affecting medicines change the safety decision. Check the label, account for serving size and cooking heat, and address sodium in prepared foods rather than relying on a shaker swap alone.
