Choose PostgreSQL when a primary/standby or single-region design meets your resilience needs and you depend on PostgreSQL’s mature extensions and conventional operating tools. Choose CockroachDB when distributed SQL is a first-order requirement: nodes share reads and writes, data is replicated across failure domains, and horizontal growth and multi-region placement belong in the database architecture itself.
The difficult part is the boundary between those choices. CockroachDB speaks the PostgreSQL wire protocol and accepts many familiar SQL patterns, but PostgreSQL compatibility is not identical behavior. Extension support, data types, transaction isolation, schema changes, query plans, and upgrade procedures can differ. If independent upgrade schedules matter, compare complete release runbooks for your exact version and topology rather than comparing version numbers alone.
The short decision
PostgreSQL and CockroachDB solve different default problems. PostgreSQL traditionally starts as a single-node, single-writer relational database. Teams can add read replicas, partitioning, sharding frameworks, and failover systems, but each addition creates another design and maintenance decision. CockroachDB starts with a distributed SQL model: every node can read or write, data is replicated, and consensus keeps the cluster operating when nodes or localities fail.
That difference matters most when your application must span regions, continue serving through infrastructure failures, or grow transaction capacity by adding nodes. It matters less when you operate comfortably in one region, can tolerate a primary/standby failover model, and rely heavily on PostgreSQL-specific extensions or semantics.

Cockroach Labs described the distinction on April 24, 2026: “PostgreSQL is traditionally deployed as a single-node, single writer, relational database, while CockroachDB is a distributed SQL database where every node can read or write, built for horizontal scale and fault tolerance.” That is an architectural description, not a claim that every workload will be faster or cheaper on CockroachDB.
What distributed SQL changes in practice
PostgreSQL’s composed scale-out model
A PostgreSQL deployment can be highly available and geographically distributed, but the database does not automatically turn a set of servers into one shared, multi-writer system. Teams commonly choose a primary, one or more standbys, read replicas, table partitioning, a sharding framework, and a failover or connection-routing layer. Those are viable patterns. They also require decisions about which data is authoritative, where writes go, how replicas are promoted, how partitions are placed, and how applications react during a failure.
This model is attractive when operational boundaries are clear. A single writer can simplify transaction reasoning, and PostgreSQL’s established tooling and extensions can be decisive. The cost is that horizontal scale and multi-region behavior are assembled from several moving parts rather than supplied as one distributed database abstraction.

CockroachDB’s shared distributed model
CockroachDB replicates data across the cluster and uses consensus to coordinate replicas. Every node can accept reads and writes, so adding nodes is intended to increase both storage and transactional capacity. Replication across failure domains allows the cluster to continue operating through node or locality failures, subject to the placement and quorum design you choose.
For a multi-region application, this means the database can be designed as one distributed system spanning locations instead of a collection of separately coordinated PostgreSQL databases. Data placement still matters: latency, locality, quorum, and application access patterns must be tested. “Distributed by design” removes a class of infrastructure composition; it does not remove the need to model where data should live.

When the architecture difference is material
- Choose the distributed model when writes must remain available across multiple failure domains and adding nodes should expand the same logical database.
- Prefer PostgreSQL’s conventional model when most traffic is local to one region, a controlled primary/standby failover is acceptable, and extension compatibility is more important than built-in multi-region distribution.
- Do not select either product from a topology diagram alone. Measure the transaction paths, failover objectives, data locality, and operational skills your team actually has.
PostgreSQL compatibility is a starting point, not a guarantee
CockroachDB supports the PostgreSQL wire protocol and familiar drivers, which can reduce application changes. Cockroach Labs characterizes it as “PostgreSQL-compatible at the SQL interface level, but it is not identical to PostgreSQL in architecture or feature behavior.” Treat that sentence as a migration boundary: client libraries may connect successfully while application behavior still changes.
Extensions and database-specific features
Inventory every PostgreSQL extension, custom type, operator, function, trigger, and stored procedure before committing to a migration. An extension that is central to indexing, geospatial work, authentication, or reporting may not have an equivalent implementation. The absence of an immediate connection error does not prove that an extension’s behavior is available or compatible.
Transaction isolation and concurrency assumptions
CockroachDB uses multiversion concurrency control (MVCC) and supports SNAPSHOT and SERIALIZABLE isolation levels. Other traditional SQL isolation levels are mapped internally. Applications, ORMs, and reporting jobs that explicitly request a PostgreSQL isolation level therefore need representative tests, not a simple configuration copy.
Review code that assumes a particular visibility rule, lock behavior, serialization outcome, or retry path. Test both successful transactions and the application’s handling of aborted or retried work under contention. The relevant question is not whether the SQL parses; it is whether the resulting correctness and latency behavior matches your contract.
Types, coercions, and query behavior
CockroachDB has its own type system and performs fewer implicit coercions than PostgreSQL. Queries that relied on PostgreSQL’s automatic conversions may fail at prepare time, return a different type, or require an explicit cast. Check generated SQL from ORMs, ad-hoc reporting queries, views, materialized data pipelines, and migration scripts.

Query plans also require validation. A plan that is efficient on a single PostgreSQL writer is not evidence that the distributed execution strategy will be efficient, and a query that is harmless in one topology may incur cross-region coordination in another. Capture representative reads and writes, including the largest joins and the busiest transactional paths, then compare correctness and service-level behavior on the target design.

Schema changes and application compatibility
Run migrations against a realistic copy of the schema and data. Check whether each change can coexist with the previous application version during a rolling deployment. Pay particular attention to renamed columns, changed types, new constraints, generated SQL, stored procedures, and background jobs that may lag behind the main release.
Compatibility testing should include the drivers and ORM versions you intend to keep. A PostgreSQL-compatible protocol reduces client friction, but it does not eliminate differences in metadata, error codes, transaction state, or feature support.
How to evaluate independent upgrade schedules
“Independent upgrades” can mean several different things: upgrading replicas without stopping the writer, running database and application releases on separate calendars, avoiding a full-cluster outage, or choosing when to take a major-version migration. Write down the exact meaning for your team before comparing products.
PostgreSQL minor releases
PostgreSQL documentation distinguishes minor and major releases. Minor releases preserve the internal storage format. The normal procedure is to replace the executables while the server is down and then restart it. That is operationally simpler than a major migration, but it still requires a maintenance window and a tested restart, failover, and rollback procedure for your topology.

PostgreSQL major releases
A major release can change the storage format. Documented approaches include dump and restore with pg_dumpall, pg_upgrade, and replication-based migration. pg_upgrade avoids the usual dump and restore of user data, but it still creates and migrates into a new cluster. The choice affects downtime, storage, replication setup, extension binaries, rollback, and the amount of application testing required.
CockroachDB release-specific rules
CockroachDB is designed as a distributed system, but the available compatibility window between old and new binaries, the order in which nodes may be upgraded, and the behavior of schema changes depend on the exact release and deployment topology. The reviewed material does not establish a universal zero-downtime guarantee or one policy that applies to every CockroachDB deployment.
For that reason, do not promise independent or rolling upgrades merely because the database has multiple nodes. Obtain the upgrade guidance for the precise release, test it on the same topology, and record the required finalization steps. A distributed database can reduce outage risk while still requiring coordinated version transitions.
The upgrade questions that belong in every runbook
- Node order: Can each node or replica be upgraded separately, and what happens if one node remains on the old binary longer than planned?
- Compatibility window: Which combinations of old and new binaries are supported, and for how long?
- Schema compatibility: Can the old and new application versions both read and write the schema during the transition?
- Dependencies: Which extensions, drivers, ORMs, migration tools, and observability agents must move in lockstep?
- Failure handling: What is the failover procedure if an upgrade step fails, and how do you restore service without committing to an unsupported downgrade?
- Downtime budget: How much write downtime is acceptable for a major PostgreSQL migration or a CockroachDB release finalization?
- Evidence: Which test proves that the rollback path works, rather than only proving that the forward upgrade works?
Operations: composed components versus database-managed distribution
PostgreSQL gives operators considerable control over the pieces of a highly available architecture. You can select replication modes, failover tooling, partitioning strategies, and sharding approaches that fit an existing platform. That flexibility is valuable, but the team owns the integration points and the failure drills.

The payoff is a single logical system designed for distributed operation. The trade-off is that operators must understand distributed consensus, locality configuration, cross-region latency, and the database’s release rules. Simpler topology does not mean simpler behavior; it means more of the behavior is inside the database rather than in separate products.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Licensing and procurement need a separate review
Technical compatibility does not answer licensing or commercial questions. Cockroach Labs’ licensing FAQ says versions beginning with 24.3.0, including specified later patch releases, are available under the CockroachDB Software License. The same FAQ lists Enterprise and Free self-hosted options and says cloud deployments automatically have an Enterprise license.
Confirm which terms apply to your planned deployment, organization, and revenue level. Review self-hosted and cloud arrangements separately, and record obligations for redistribution, support, and scaling. PostgreSQL’s project license and CockroachDB’s license terms should be reviewed by procurement or counsel as two distinct questions; do not infer one from the other or treat protocol compatibility as a licensing shortcut.

Select PostgreSQL when these conditions dominate
- Your required topology is one region with a primary/standby or read-replica design.
- Your application depends on PostgreSQL extensions, custom types, stored procedures, or exact PostgreSQL isolation semantics.
- Your team already operates PostgreSQL major-version migrations with
pg_upgrade, dump and restore, or replication-based methods. - You value the broadest conventional PostgreSQL tooling and can accept separately managed failover, partitioning, or sharding components.
- Independent upgrade scheduling means controlling application and database maintenance windows, not independently changing every database node.
Select CockroachDB when these conditions dominate
- Distributed SQL is a requirement rather than a future optimization.
- Nodes must share reads and writes, with data replicated across failure domains.
- You need one logical database spanning regions and are prepared to test locality and cross-region transaction behavior.
- Horizontal growth should add capacity through the cluster instead of adding a separate sharding or failover composition.
- You can validate PostgreSQL compatibility at the level of extensions, types, isolation, migrations, query plans, and drivers.
Choose neither by assumption
If your requirements sit between these profiles, run a time-boxed proof of architecture. A PostgreSQL primary/standby design may satisfy resilience with less migration risk, while CockroachDB may remove enough operational composition to justify its compatibility work. The answer depends on your actual workload and failure objectives, not on the label “distributed.”
A migration and proof-of-concept plan
- Inventory the current contract. Export the schema, extension list, custom types, stored procedures, isolation settings, migration history, driver and ORM versions, and the queries that matter most to users.
- Classify each requirement. Mark every feature as protocol-level, SQL-level, extension-level, operational, or licensing-related. This prevents a successful connection test from being mistaken for full compatibility.
- Build representative data. Include production-shaped row counts, skewed keys, the largest indexes, long-running reports, and the busiest write transactions. Small synthetic samples hide type and plan problems.
- Replay correctness cases. Test concurrent updates, explicit isolation settings, constraint failures, retries or aborted transactions, timeouts, and application recovery after a node or locality failure.
- Test schema evolution. Run each migration while both old and new application versions are active. Verify reads, writes, background jobs, and rollback at every intermediate state.
- Exercise the upgrade runbook. Use the exact release pair and topology you intend to operate. Record node order, compatibility windows, maintenance time, monitoring signals, and the recovery path for a failed step.
- Compare operating effort. Count the components and decisions required for PostgreSQL failover, placement, sharding, and upgrades, then compare them with the CockroachDB configuration, release process, and specialist knowledge your team must maintain.
- Document the decision. State the accepted failure modes, maximum write downtime, extension exceptions, supported client versions, licensing assumptions, and the event that would trigger a future re-evaluation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Equating protocol compatibility with behavioral identity. A familiar driver proves that a connection can be made; it does not prove extension, type, isolation, or query-plan equivalence.
- Calling a multi-node topology independently upgradeable without a release test. Verify binary compatibility, schema compatibility, finalization, and rollback for the exact release.
- Ignoring the application’s transaction contract. Isolation-level mapping and fewer implicit coercions can change correctness even when ordinary queries continue to run.
- Comparing products without comparing architecture. PostgreSQL plus replicas, sharding, and failover may meet the requirement, but the operational burden belongs in the comparison.
- Using a generic performance claim. No material benchmark or capacity figure establishes a universal winner. Measure your own cross-region latency, transaction mix, failover objectives, and upgrade window.
- Leaving licensing until after the technical selection. CockroachDB terms changed for versions beginning with 24.3.0; confirm current terms and review PostgreSQL licensing separately before procurement.
Bottom line for teams planning now
PostgreSQL is the safer default when your design can remain a primary/standby or single-region system and PostgreSQL-specific behavior is central to the application. CockroachDB is the stronger architectural fit when distributed SQL, replicated multi-region operation, and horizontal growth are requirements you do not want to assemble from separate systems.
Independent upgrade schedules are not awarded automatically by either product. PostgreSQL offers a well-documented distinction between simpler minor upgrades and major migrations using tools such as pg_upgrade, dump and restore, or replication-based approaches. CockroachDB may support rolling procedures, but the supported sequence and compatibility window are release- and topology-specific. Make the final choice only after a representative compatibility test and a rehearsed upgrade and rollback runbook.
