Choose PostgreSQL when jobs need to be committed atomically with application data and your team can operate a queue table, worker claims, retries, and cleanup. Choose Redis when its queue-oriented structures—such as lists for work handoff or Streams for tracked consumers—fit your coordination needs better. Neither is automatically faster or more reliable: the right choice depends on failure recovery, transactional coupling, operational requirements, and performance measured on your workload.
How PostgreSQL and Redis queues differ
A queue needs more than a place to put jobs. It must define how workers claim work, what happens when a worker fails, when jobs are retried or deleted, and how the system behaves during restart or failover. PostgreSQL and Redis can both support these workflows, but they put the responsibility in different places.
| Decision area | PostgreSQL queue | Redis queue |
|---|---|---|
| Where queue state lives | In database rows that can participate in transactions with application records. | In Redis data structures, separate from application state unless the application also stores its state there. |
| Worker coordination | Workers claim rows using locks; FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED lets them avoid waiting on rows already locked by peers. |
Lists support atomic pending-to-processing handoff patterns. Streams add consumer groups, acknowledgments, and pending-entry tracking. |
| Waiting for work | LISTEN/NOTIFY can wake workers, while the job table remains the source of truth. |
Workers can block while reading lists or Streams. Pub/Sub does not retain messages for offline consumers. |
| Delays, priority, and fan-out | These can be represented in a job table, but increasingly complex workflows require more application logic. | Sorted sets can support delayed or priority work; Stream consumer groups can track independent progress over retained entries. |
| Operational considerations | Can avoid adding a service when PostgreSQL is already operated, but queue activity must not undermine its primary database workload. | Offers queue-focused structures, but persistence, memory use, eviction, and recovery need deliberate operation. |
PostgreSQL 16 documentation cautions that skipping locked rows creates an inconsistent view of data. That makes SKIP LOCKED useful for queue-like worker claims, not a general-purpose way to read a consistent result set. The locking mechanism is not a complete queue implementation: job lifecycle, leases, retries, and cleanup remain application responsibilities.

When PostgreSQL is the better fit
Jobs must commit with application changes
If creating or changing an application record must also create a job, storing both in PostgreSQL lets the transaction commit or roll back both changes together. That avoids a gap in which the application update succeeds but publishing the corresponding job does not. Workers can then claim eligible rows from the same durable database.

Your existing database can handle the added workload
A PostgreSQL queue is attractive when PostgreSQL is already a core service and queue volume remains compatible with its main workload. It may mean fewer deployed services, but it still adds database writes, locks, indexes, and cleanup. Assess the effect on the application’s database rather than assuming that reuse is operationally free.
You can own the queue lifecycle
A practical worker pattern is to claim a bounded batch, mark the jobs claimed or record a lease in the same short transaction, commit, and only then perform lengthy external work. Use a stable ordering rule if predictable ordering matters. Set a lease or timeout and a retry policy so a worker crash does not leave a job claimed indefinitely. Make job handling idempotent where retries could repeat an external side effect.

When Redis is the better fit
You need queue-oriented handoff and recovery patterns
Redis list patterns can move work atomically from a pending list to a processing list. A reclaimer can return jobs left in processing when a worker dies. This pattern still needs a visibility timeout, retry limits, and a policy for work that repeatedly fails; the data structure alone does not decide those rules.
You need tracked consumers or independent consumer groups
Redis Streams consumer groups track pending entries and acknowledgments, and different groups can make progress independently over retained stream entries. This can fit workflows where multiple independent services need to consume the same stream of work. A worker should acknowledge only after completing the work and any required durable state update. Configure retention and pending-entry recovery deliberately, and define what happens after repeated failures, such as routing exhausted jobs to a dead-letter path.

You need delayed or priority work
Redis documents sorted-set patterns for scheduling delayed jobs and representing priority. These patterns can be useful when those capabilities are central to the workflow. PostgreSQL can store due times or priorities too, but the application must implement the selection and scheduling behavior; complexity grows as more workflow rules are added.
How to choose between Lists and Streams
Use a Redis list pattern when the core need is moving jobs through pending and processing states, and your application can manage reclamation and retries. Use Streams when consumer-group tracking, acknowledgments, pending-entry inspection, or independent group progress is important. Streams do not remove the need to decide retention, retry, and acknowledgment policies.

Do not substitute Redis Pub/Sub for a durable queue when consumers may be offline. Redis describes Pub/Sub as fire-and-forget: it does not provide persistence, replay, or consumer tracking. Use a persistent queue structure when work must remain available for later recovery.

What failure recovery and durability require
PostgreSQL: recover claims, not just rows
The job row is durable queue state, but a worker can fail after claiming a job. Record a lease or claim timestamp, detect expired claims, and make the job eligible for retry according to an explicit policy. Keep claim transactions short; holding database locks while performing slow network or other external work increases contention and complicates recovery.

Redis: match durability settings to the loss you can tolerate
Redis persistence and replication configuration affect whether recent queue writes survive a restart or failover. Redis documents that asynchronous replication can lose recent writes or consumer-group state after failover. If losing recently accepted work or progress is unacceptable, choose and operate persistence and recovery settings accordingly; the word “queue” alone is not a durability guarantee.
Both: design for retries and duplicate effects
Queue recovery can cause a job to run again when a worker’s completion status is uncertain. Make handlers safe to retry where possible, define attempt limits and backoff, and decide how to surface permanently failing work. When a job changes application state in a different system from the queue, specify how those writes are reconciled after partial failure.
Using PostgreSQL notifications without losing jobs
LISTEN/NOTIFY is best treated as a wake-up signal, not the queue itself. PostgreSQL delivers notifications only after the transaction that issued them commits. Store the job and its payload in a table, then notify workers with a key or other small signal so they can query for eligible rows. Have workers inspect the table after reconnecting or periodically, because a notification should not be the only way to discover durable work.

How to compare performance and operating cost
There is no workload-matched PostgreSQL-versus-Redis benchmark established here, so a blanket claim that one is faster is not justified. Measure both designs with realistic job sizes, concurrency, and persistence settings. Include more than enqueue throughput:
- Enqueue and claim latency, plus throughput under expected contention.
- Impact on PostgreSQL’s primary workload or Redis memory use and eviction risk.
- Behavior during worker crashes, restarts, and failover, including recovery time and lost or repeated work.
- Retry, retention, and cleanup costs as the queue grows.
- The operational effort required to monitor and recover the chosen design.
For a fair comparison, test the same job lifecycle and failure scenarios, not just how quickly each system accepts a write. Include the actual persistence, replication, and recovery configuration you intend to run.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose PostgreSQL if atomicity between application changes and job creation is a primary requirement, and the database can absorb the queue workload.
- Choose Redis if its list handoff, Stream consumer groups, or sorted-set scheduling patterns directly fit the workflow and you can operate the required durability and recovery configuration.
- Before either choice, specify claim or acknowledgment behavior, worker-crash recovery, retry limits, idempotency, retention, and cleanup.
- Benchmark the complete workflow and its failure modes before treating performance as a deciding factor.
