To run compatible software from a pen drive, install the PortableApps.com Platform on the drive, open Start.exe from its root, and install and launch apps through the Platform menu. This keeps the Platform and app files on removable storage rather than requiring those files to live on your PC’s internal drive. It does not guarantee that every app keeps all of its data off the PC.
What you need before you start
- A Windows PC and a USB flash drive or other supported storage device. Choose capacity based on the apps and files you plan to keep on it; PortableApps.com does not specify a universal minimum.
- An internet connection if you plan to download the Platform or apps during setup.
- Permission to run software on the PC. A USB drive does not bypass workplace, school, or other device security policies.
PortableApps.com supports use from portable storage as well as local drives and synced cloud folders. A pen drive is convenient when you want to carry the Platform between computers; a synced folder depends on the relevant files being available on the device you are using. The official pages do not establish comparative speed or durability rankings for these options. PortableApps.com’s explanation of portable apps describes supported storage types.
Install PortableApps on a USB drive
- Download the PortableApps.com Platform installer from the official Platform support page.
- Run the installer and select your USB drive as the destination. PortableApps.com recommends installing the Platform at the root of the drive, rather than inside another folder.
- When installation finishes, open the USB drive in File Explorer and double-click
Start.exein the drive’s root. PortableApps.com gives this instruction in its Platform Support guide.
The Platform menu is the launcher for the apps you add. If Windows displays a security prompt, follow your organization’s rules and only proceed if you trust the software and are authorized to run it.
Add portable apps to the drive
Install from the built-in app catalog
- Open the PortableApps.com Menu.
- Select Apps > Get More Apps.
- Choose the apps you want from the catalog and complete the installation prompts.
Install a downloaded PortableApps.com package
- Download the app’s PortableApps.com Format installer, which ends in
.paf.exe. - In the Platform menu, choose Apps > Install a New App.
- Select the downloaded installer and follow its prompts, choosing the USB drive if asked for a destination.
PortableApps.com documents both installation routes in its Platform Support guide and Portable App Support instructions. App availability and instructions can vary, so follow the current directions for the specific app.

Run an app and close it safely
For apps installed through the Platform, open the menu and select the app. The support instructions also describe starting a supported standalone app by opening its executable in its installed folder. When finished, close the app and the Platform, then wait for drive activity to stop before removing the USB drive.
- Close each open portable app so it can save its settings and finish any cleanup.
- Exit the Platform if it is still open.
- Wait until the drive’s activity light stops flashing, if it has one.
- Use the Platform’s eject control or Windows’ safe-removal option, and unplug the drive only when Windows indicates it is safe.
Removing a drive during a write can corrupt app files or lose data. PortableApps.com’s guidance covers Platform use and ejection, safe removal, and safe portable app use.

Will portable apps free up space on your PC?
Storing the Platform and app files on a USB drive can keep those files off your PC’s internal storage. There is no universal space-saving figure: the amount depends on the apps and files you choose, and PortableApps.com does not provide a standard capacity or per-app host-storage measurement in the cited guidance.

“Portable” is not an absolute guarantee that an app leaves no trace on the computer. PortableApps.com says its own format is designed for portability, but software outside that format may leave data on the host PC or behave differently across computers. Some apps may also have compatibility limits. Check with the app’s provider if it matters whether settings, temporary files, or other data are written to the PC. PortableApps.com’s definition explains the concept; its support guide describes portability caveats.

Back up the drive and consider compatibility
A USB drive can be lost, damaged, or removed while an app is writing. Keep a separate backup of files you cannot afford to lose. PortableApps.com’s app-data-only backup feature does not cover data for apps outside PortableApps.com Format, so back up the whole drive if you rely on non-format apps or want a complete copy. The limitation is described in the Platform Support guide.
PortableApps.com does not promise that every app will work on every PC. A different computer may have different permissions, components, or security rules, and software not designed for the PortableApps.com Format may not travel cleanly. Confirm the app’s requirements and your authorization to run it on each computer.
