If you want a portable Bluetooth speaker with strong bass, start by deciding how much size and weight you are willing to carry. The five current candidates here range from the compact, rugged-use JBL Charge 6 to the much heavier JBL Boombox 3. The available sources do not provide comparable independent bass measurements across all five, so this is a practical comparison guide—not a sound-quality ranking.

How to choose a portable speaker for bass

“Strong bass” can mean different things: a fuller low end at everyday listening levels, bass that stays prominent as volume rises, or simply a bigger, more room-filling sound. The supplied sources do not establish which of these five speakers delivers the most bass in a controlled comparison. Treat manufacturer descriptions as product claims, not proof of superiority.

Consider the trade-offs that affect daily use alongside bass: enclosure size and weight, whether the speaker has a handle or strap, protection against water or drops, battery-life claims, and the features you need. A larger speaker may be less convenient to carry; a smaller one may suit trips where portability matters more than maximum output.

Five portable Bluetooth speakers to consider

JBL Charge 6: a compact, rugged-use candidate

JBL describes the Charge 6 as waterproof and drop-proof and advertises up to 28 hours of playtime. That runtime is the manufacturer’s claim; actual battery life can vary with listening volume and use. The evidence available here does not include a comparable independent bass measurement for this model. See JBL’s Charge 6 product page for its product information.

JBL Boombox 3: deeper-bass positioning, with a substantial carry burden

JBL says the Boombox 3’s redesigned enclosure includes a subwoofer “unleashing much deeper bass.” That is JBL’s product positioning, not an independent comparison result. JBL lists the speaker at 6.7 kg (14.7 lb), making its weight a meaningful consideration if you plan to carry it regularly.

JBL’s specifications list a dynamic frequency response of 40 Hz–20 kHz, IP67 protection, and up to 24 hours of maximum music-playing time. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not comparable test results for all five candidates. Check JBL’s Boombox 3 specifications for the full details.

Bose SoundLink Max: compare its carry design with Sony’s

RTINGS’ comparison says the SoundLink Max is lighter than the Sony ULT FIELD 5 and has an integrated handle, while the Sony uses a removable strap. That distinction may matter more than a small difference in sound descriptions if you expect to move the speaker often. Bose provides an official SoundLink Max support and specifications page; the available evidence does not establish a full specification or bass-performance comparison against every speaker here.

Sony ULT FIELD 5: removable-strap carry option

The cited RTINGS comparison supports a limited carry-design comparison: the ULT FIELD 5 uses a removable strap, while the Bose SoundLink Max has an integrated handle and is lighter. It does not establish a complete performance ranking or a comparative bass result for the two models. See RTINGS’ Bose SoundLink Max versus Sony ULT FIELD 5 comparison for that specific comparison.

At-a-glance comparison

Model What the cited sources establish Important limitation
JBL Charge 6 JBL describes it as waterproof and drop-proof and advertises up to 28 hours of playtime. No comparable independent bass measurement is established here.
JBL Boombox 3 JBL lists 6.7 kg (14.7 lb), IP67, a 40 Hz–20 kHz dynamic frequency response, and up to 24 hours of maximum music-playing time; it promotes the redesigned subwoofer as delivering deeper bass. Specifications and runtime are manufacturer claims; its weight is a notable carrying trade-off.
Bose SoundLink Max RTINGS says it is lighter than the Sony ULT FIELD 5 and has an integrated handle. The evidence here does not support a full specification or bass comparison across all five.
Sony ULT FIELD 5 RTINGS says it uses a removable strap, unlike the Bose’s integrated handle. The cited comparison does not establish a full performance ranking.
JBL Xtreme 5 Included in What Hi-Fi?’s September 4, 2026 buying guide, which names the Bose SoundLink Max as a close rival. The cited excerpt does not establish directly comparable bass results or complete specifications.

Which one fits your priorities?

  • Choose for easier everyday carrying: consider the Charge 6 if its rugged-use positioning and advertised runtime suit your needs; the evidence here does not prove it has the strongest bass.
  • Consider a larger speaker if bass is the priority and weight is acceptable: the Boombox 3 is the clearest bass-forward product claim in this group, but JBL’s description is not a comparative test, and the listed weight is 6.7 kg (14.7 lb).
  • Compare carry methods before choosing between Bose and Sony: RTINGS identifies an integrated handle and lower weight for the Bose, versus a removable strap for the Sony.
  • Check current details on newer models: the Charge 6 and Xtreme 5 appear in recent buying coverage; verify the exact generation and specifications before purchasing.

What to verify before buying

  • Bass at your usual volume: seek listening tests that compare the exact models at similar volume levels. A brand’s bass description is not a substitute for a controlled comparison.
  • Portability: check the published weight and dimensions, and whether you prefer a handle or strap.
  • Protection: confirm the specific water, dust, or drop rating for the model and understand what the rating covers.
  • Battery expectations: treat advertised maximum playtime as a claim, not a guaranteed result for every listening condition.
  • Connectivity and charging: review each manufacturer’s current specifications for the features you need; the cited sources do not provide a consistent feature comparison across all five.
  • Generation and availability: confirm the model name and exact generation on the product listing, especially when considering newer choices.
