For most people who need internet away from fixed broadband, the practical starting point is Starlink Mini paired with a Roam plan. Mini is the compact terminal: it has an electronic phased-array antenna, integrated Wi-Fi, a DC input and a backpack-friendly design. Roam is the service-plan family that determines where and how you may use it, how much data is included and whether features such as Standby Mode, in-motion use or travel beyond your home country are available.

The purchase decision is less about advertised peak speed than about four constraints: an unobstructed view of the sky, 25–40 watts of average electrical demand, a plan that matches your travel pattern and country-specific service rules. The calculations and policies below are based on Starlink specifications and service documents available through October 16, 2026; prices, eligibility, bundles and plan names can change, so the country-specific order page is the final authority.

What you are buying: a terminal plus a service plan

Portable satellite internet has two separate components. The terminal is the physical antenna, router and cabling. The service plan authorizes that terminal to connect to the satellite network under particular mobility, data and geographic rules.

Starlink Mini is the portable terminal documented for this use case. Starlink describes it as a compact kit designed to fit in a backpack while providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity. A Roam plan is not a different antenna; it is a subscription attached to the service address and account. You can therefore change plans without replacing Mini, subject to availability in your market.

Mini specifications that affect portability

Specification Starlink Mini Why it matters
Dimensions 298.5 × 259 × 38.5 mm Small enough for a backpack, but allow room for the stand, cable and power source.
Bare-unit weight 1.10 kg Weight of the terminal alone.
Weight with kickstand and 15 m cable 1.53 kg A more realistic carry weight before adding a power supply or case.
Networking Integrated Wi-Fi No separate travel router is required for ordinary client devices.
Power input 12–48 V DC, 60 W input rating Supports a wide DC-voltage range when the source and cable are correctly matched.
Average consumption 25–40 W Battery capacity and conversion losses are central to trip planning.
Ingress and environmental rating IP67 Type 4 with the DC cable installed Suitable for exposed outdoor use when the cable connection is properly seated; it is not a reason to submerge the terminal.
Operating temperature −30°C to 50°C Use within this stated operating range and protect batteries from their own temperature limits.

The 1.53 kg figure includes the kickstand and 15 m cable. A complete field kit weighs more once you add a USB-C cable or power station, protective packing and any mounting hardware. The long cable is useful when the best sky view is away from your sitting or working area, but it also adds bulk.

How to choose a portable terminal

When comparing portable satellite terminals, evaluate the attributes that change what you can actually carry and operate rather than relying on a headline speed number.

  • Packability: record terminal dimensions and the weight of the unit with its stand and cable, not just the bare antenna.
  • Networking: integrated Wi-Fi reduces the number of boxes and cables. A terminal without integrated networking may need a separate router and its own power draw.
  • Input-voltage flexibility: a 12–48 V DC input can work with more vehicle and battery systems, provided the cable and voltage are correct.
  • Average draw: use the sustained average, not only a maximum or start-up figure, when sizing a battery.
  • Weather and temperature rating: check whether the rating applies with the cable fitted and whether your batteries and connectors have narrower limits.
  • Cable requirements: proprietary connectors, long runs and adapters can introduce voltage drop, conversion loss or weather-sealing problems.

Mini is the only portable terminal for which this guide has a complete, current specification set. Other terminals should not be ranked here without verified figures for weight, power, environmental protection and networking; a smaller-looking antenna is not automatically easier to power or more capable while moving.

Power planning: the decision that determines whether portability works

Starlink lists Mini’s average consumption at 25–40 W. That is substantial compared with a phone or tablet and makes power planning as important as choosing a plan. The terminal’s input rating is 12–48 V and 60 W, so a source must provide the correct voltage and enough continuous power even when the system is operating near the upper end of its average range.

Can a power bank run Starlink Mini?

It can, but only when the complete setup meets Starlink’s documented requirement. For the Starlink Mini USB-C-to-barrel-jack cable accessory, Starlink specifies a USB Power Delivery source rated at least 100 W, 20 V and 5 A. A typical low-wattage phone power bank is therefore not an evidence-backed choice: it may negotiate only 5 V or 9 V, limit output to a few dozen watts or shut down under sustained load.

Look for all three values on the source and its USB-C port: 20 V output, 5 A capability and 100 W minimum USB-PD power. The cable must also be the specified USB-C-to-barrel-jack type, not a passive USB lead with an improvised plug. Check polarity, connector fit and the manufacturer’s compatibility information before connecting power.

Portable power station versus USB-C battery

A portable power station is a sensible category when you need several hours of operation, vehicle charging or extra outputs for a laptop and phones. A USB-C battery can reduce size and conversion steps, but only if its high-power PD profile is documented and it can sustain the load. Neither category guarantees a particular runtime: usable watt-hours, temperature, network activity and conversion efficiency all change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimate runtime from watt-hours

Use this planning equation:

Estimated runtime (hours) = battery capacity (Wh) × conversion efficiency ÷ Mini power draw (W).

For an illustrative 500 Wh battery and an assumed 85% usable conversion efficiency, the energy available to Mini would be about 425 Wh. At 25 W, that is approximately 17 hours; at 40 W, approximately 10.6 hours. A 1,000 Wh battery under the same assumption would provide roughly 34 hours at 25 W or 21.25 hours at 40 W.

These are calculations, not controlled runtime tests. Real results can be shorter because the battery’s stated capacity may be measured under different conditions, the inverter or DC converter consumes energy, cold reduces battery output and satellite traffic can change the terminal’s draw. Keep a reserve rather than planning to reach a battery’s last percentage.

Ways to reduce wasted energy

  • Use a documented DC path when your power station supports the required voltage and connector, avoiding an unnecessary AC inverter stage.
  • Keep the cable run only as long as needed to reach a clear sky view.
  • Turn off client devices and other outputs on the power station when they are not needed.
  • Keep batteries within their specified operating temperature and out of direct heat.
  • Carry a second charging method, such as a vehicle input or solar-compatible station, if losing connectivity would strand you.

Choosing a Roam plan

Roam plans control mobility and data allowances, while the terminal remains the same. Starlink’s plan page shows Roam 50 GB and Roam Unlimited examples. A March 2025 Critical Information Summary also documents 5 GB, 50 GB and unlimited allowances in its market snapshot. Because plan names, prices and availability vary by country and can change, treat those allowances as examples rather than a universal global catalog.

Plan example Documented allowance What is established What you must verify locally
Roam 5 GB 5 GB in the March 2025 market snapshot A limited allowance suitable only for light, occasional sessions if offered in your market. Current availability, price, overage or suspension behavior, and eligible mobility features.
Roam 50 GB 50 GB on the plan page and in the March 2025 snapshot A mid-tier allowance example for email, browsing, maps and intermittent work. Current price, rollover or overage rules, Standby Mode, in-motion eligibility and geographic limits.
Roam Unlimited Unlimited in the March 2025 snapshot and on the plan page The cited Help Center policy allows up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time, subject to the plan’s rules. Country eligibility, travel registration, coastal and ocean access, in-motion use and any local restrictions.

Estimate your data requirement

  • Light field use: messaging, email, weather maps and occasional web pages generally place less demand on an allowance than video or cloud backups.
  • Remote work: video meetings, large file transfers and operating-system updates can consume a limited allowance quickly. Schedule updates and backups over another connection where possible.
  • Shared groups: count every connected phone, laptop, camera and streaming device. A plan that works for one person may not cover a campsite or crew.

Do not assume “unlimited” means unlimited performance. The Critical Information Summary reports estimated download speeds of 30–100 Mbps, upload speeds of 10–30 Mbps and latency below 99 ms, while expressly stating that speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed.

Standby Mode and movement features

Standby Mode and in-motion eligibility are plan- and market-dependent. Confirm both in the current order flow before paying, especially if you want to pause service between trips or keep a connection while a vehicle or vessel is moving. A plan that works at a stationary campsite may not authorize use while driving or underway.

Coverage: country, borders, coast and open water

Roam supports countrywide use where Starlink is active, but “portable” does not mean worldwide or unrestricted. Coverage depends on Starlink service availability at the location, local regulatory authorization, your registered service country and the rules attached to the plan.

Using Mini in your home country

  1. Check the address or map for active service in the country where the terminal is registered.
  2. Verify that the Roam plan permits use away from the registered service address.
  3. At each destination, place Mini where buildings, trees, cliffs and vehicle roofs do not block its view of the sky.
  4. Allow the terminal time to acquire satellites and confirm service before relying on it for work or navigation.

International travel

International use requires compliance with the plan’s travel and registration rules. The cited Starlink Help Center policy says Roam Unlimited includes up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time. That is a limit on the documented allowance, not a blanket promise that every destination is authorized. Check the destination country, any required travel registration and the current account terms before crossing a border.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coastal, inland-waterway and ocean use

Coastal, inland-waterway and open-ocean access have separate limits and optional modes. Do not infer ocean coverage from a successful land test or from a plan labeled Roam. Confirm the exact water area, mode, movement restrictions and required plan in the current service documentation. A boat may also need a stable mounting position, weather protection for the power system and enough battery capacity for periods without shore power.

Sky view and physical setup

A clear sky view is a practical prerequisite. Mini cannot compensate for a permanent obstruction directly above the terminal, and a location that appears open from ground level may still be blocked by a roof edge, canopy or nearby trees.

Field setup checklist

  1. Scout the site: choose the most open available position, keeping the terminal away from walls, heavy foliage and metal structures.
  2. Set the kickstand or a secure mount: prevent sliding, tipping and cable strain. On a vehicle or boat, use hardware appropriate to vibration and wind.
  3. Route the 15 m cable: keep it clear of walkways and sharp edges, leave a gentle service loop and protect the connector from standing water.
  4. Connect power: verify the source voltage and, for the USB-C accessory, the 100 W, 20 V/5 A USB-PD requirement before energizing the terminal.
  5. Power up and wait for acquisition: connect your phone or laptop to Mini’s integrated Wi-Fi and check that the service is online.
  6. Test before packing away: open the account or status interface, confirm connectivity and perform the work you actually need rather than relying only on a speed test.

What performance to expect

The March 2025 Roam summary gives estimated ranges of 30–100 Mbps download, 10–30 Mbps upload and latency below 99 ms. These figures are not guarantees. Obstructions, satellite capacity, weather, congestion, the location’s regulatory status and the terminal’s current orientation can all affect results. Plan critical work around the possibility of interruptions and carry an alternative connection for emergencies.

For ordinary browsing, email, cloud applications and many video calls, those estimated ranges can be adequate. Large uploads, several simultaneous video streams and latency-sensitive applications are more sensitive to fluctuations. A speed test at one campsite is not a promise for another campsite, border crossing or stretch of water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Costs, requirements and what to verify before ordering

The available documents do not establish a single global hardware price or Roam subscription price. Prices, taxes, currency, hardware bundles and plan availability are country-specific and volatile. Use the order page for the country in which the account will be registered as the final source.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Confirm that Starlink service is active and authorized at your destinations.
  • Choose a Mini kit that includes the stand and cable length you can carry.
  • Budget for a compatible 100 W USB-C PD source or a power station with sufficient usable watt-hours.
  • Check whether your intended plan includes the data allowance and mobility features you need.
  • Verify international, coastal, inland-waterway or open-ocean rules separately; do not rely on the word “Roam” alone.
  • Confirm Standby Mode and in-motion eligibility if you will pause service or use the terminal while moving.
  • Plan a clear sky location and a secure way to keep the terminal stable.

Troubleshooting common failures

Mini does not power on

  • Check that the battery or station is switched on and has adequate charge.
  • For the USB-C accessory, confirm the port can deliver 100 W at 20 V/5 A; a port labeled only “fast charge” is not sufficient evidence.
  • Inspect the barrel connector, cable seating and polarity. Do not force an incompatible plug.
  • Try a direct DC output or another documented source if an inverter is shutting down under load.

Power cuts out after a few minutes

  • Look for a low-battery cutoff or an output time limit on the power bank.
  • Check whether the source is sharing its wattage with other USB devices.
  • Keep the battery within its temperature range and allow ventilation.
  • Recalculate runtime using 40 W rather than 25 W and include conversion losses.

Service is intermittent or unavailable

  • Move the terminal to a more open sky view and remove temporary obstructions.
  • Check that the account is active and that the plan allows the current country or water area.
  • For international travel, verify registration and the permitted duration outside the home country.
  • Remember that stated speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed; retain a backup connection for essential work.

Bottom-line buying decision

Choose Starlink Mini when you need a genuinely portable terminal and can supply 25–40 W for the duration of each session. Pair it with the Roam allowance that matches your data use, then verify mobility, travel and water-access rules for your country before ordering. A clear sky view and a correctly sized battery matter more in the field than a small difference in advertised speed. For USB-C operation, use the documented 100 W, 20 V/5 A PD requirement; for longer trips, size a power station from usable watt-hours and treat the result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime.
