A power bank is a small rechargeable battery designed primarily to charge USB devices. A portable power station is a larger battery system that may add AC wall-style outlets, high-power USB ports and DC outputs for camping, work or emergency backup. There is no universal watt-hour (Wh) cutoff that separates the categories, so compare the actual specifications rather than the product label.
The practical decision comes down to four questions: what you need to power, how much energy it requires, which outputs it accepts and how much weight you are willing to carry. A phone-only traveler usually needs a power bank; someone running a monitor, router, CPAP machine or small appliance may need a power station with an inverter.
What is the difference between a power bank and a portable power station?
Power bank
A power bank is a battery pack with charging circuitry and one or more USB outputs. It is optimized for phones, tablets, headphones, cameras and other devices that charge through USB. Larger models can charge some laptops through USB-C Power Delivery (PD), but the laptop must support the offered voltage and wattage.
Power banks generally have no AC inverter. You cannot plug a normal wall-plug appliance into a USB-only model, even if its battery has enough stored energy. Port count, USB-C capability, charging protocols and maximum output vary substantially between models.

Portable power station
A portable power station combines a larger battery with multiple output systems. Depending on the model, it can provide AC outlets through an inverter, USB-A and USB-C ports, 12-volt DC outputs and sometimes specialized connectors. Many support more than one charging method, such as a household outlet, vehicle socket or solar panel.
The term is functional rather than a strict technical class. A compact station may be DC-only, while a large power bank may include laptop-capable USB-C. Read the specification sheet for capacity, continuous output, surge rating, ports, dimensions and weight.

Why watt-hours matter more than milliamp-hours
Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy in a way that can be compared across batteries with different voltages. Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe charge at a stated or assumed voltage and can be misleading when products use different internal voltages.
When a manufacturer provides Wh, use that value. If only volts and amp-hours are available, calculate:
Wh = volts × amp-hours
For a label expressed in milliamp-hours, first divide mAh by 1,000 to obtain amp-hours, then multiply by the voltage. Do not guess the voltage when the product label or manufacturer specifies it; use the stated value. The Federal Aviation Administration uses this volts-times-amp-hours method for passenger-battery rules.

Capacity does not equal guaranteed runtime
A 288Wh station does not necessarily deliver 288Wh to an appliance. USB regulation, AC inversion, cabling, the device’s own charger and the station’s reserve can reduce usable energy. Runtime also changes with temperature, battery age and whether the load cycles on and off.

For AC equipment, allow for inverter and charging losses; for USB equipment, check the output path and the device’s charging behavior. A device that draws 60W continuously from a 288Wh station cannot be promised a precise number of hours without the manufacturer’s usable-capacity and efficiency data.
Output power: the limit that determines whether a device will run
Capacity answers “how much energy is stored?” Output power answers “can the battery supply this load at all?” A station with ample Wh can still shut down if an appliance exceeds its inverter’s continuous rating.
Continuous output
Continuous output is the power the station can sustain under its stated conditions. Compare it with the appliance’s running wattage, including the power consumed by an attached charger or power brick. Leave headroom instead of selecting a unit whose rating is exactly equal to the label value.
Surge output
Motors, compressors and some power supplies draw a short startup surge above their running wattage. Refrigerators, pumps and certain tools may need a station with a separately specified surge rating and duration. A phone charger normally has no comparable motor surge, so this consideration is more important for AC appliances.

USB-C is a connector, not a guaranteed power level. Confirm whether the port supports USB-C PD, which voltage profiles it offers and its maximum watts. A laptop may charge slowly, refuse to charge or discharge while connected if the source does not meet its PD requirements. USB-A output is useful for many phones and accessories but generally offers fewer high-power laptop options.

AC, DC and voltage compatibility
An AC outlet is useful for equipment with a normal wall plug, but the station’s inverter must provide the voltage and frequency required by that equipment. DC outputs can be more efficient for compatible 12V equipment because they avoid an AC conversion, but the connector polarity, voltage and current rating must match exactly. Never force a connector or use an adapter that changes polarity without confirming compatibility.
Recharge methods and what to check
Wall charging
Wall input is usually the fastest and most predictable method. Check the station’s maximum input wattage and the supplied charger; a higher-rated charger does not make a station recharge faster than its input circuit permits.
Vehicle charging
A vehicle socket can replenish a station during a trip, but charging is often slower than from a wall outlet. Verify the station’s vehicle-input voltage, current limit and whether the vehicle socket remains powered when the ignition is off.

Solar input depends on panel voltage, current, connector type, sunlight, shading and the station’s allowable input range. A panel’s advertised peak wattage is not a guaranteed real-world rate. Confirm the open-circuit voltage and maximum current before connecting a panel, and use the input method specified by the station manufacturer.
Which one fits common situations?
Phone, earbuds and tablet during travel
Choose a power bank when your devices charge through USB and you want the smallest practical kit. Prioritize a USB-C port with enough output for the fastest device you intend to charge, total port count and a clearly stated Wh rating. A power bank measured in Wh is also easier to evaluate against airline limits.
USB-C laptop on a train, in a café or at a work site
A power bank can work if its USB-C PD profile meets the laptop’s requirement and the bank’s output is high enough. Check the laptop charger’s wattage and the bank’s maximum USB-C output rather than relying on the battery’s mAh figure. If the laptop requires a proprietary AC adapter or a higher wattage than USB-C can provide, use a station with a suitable AC inverter and enough continuous output.

Camping with lights, cameras and several USB devices
A station is generally more convenient when several people need power or when you want USB, DC and AC options in one unit. Balance capacity against carrying distance: a larger battery extends operating time but adds mass. Solar input can help during a multi-day trip, provided the panel and station are electrically compatible.
Running a router, monitor or other home-office equipment during an outage
Start with the combined running wattage of every device, then estimate the required hours. Include the router, display, computer and chargers rather than counting only the computer’s rated adapter. Select a station whose continuous AC rating exceeds the combined load and whose Wh capacity covers the desired duration after conversion losses. A station is not automatically an uninterruptible power supply; check whether it supports pass-through operation and whether its transfer time suits your equipment.
Medical equipment or appliances
Check the equipment maker’s electrical requirements and any approved backup-power guidance. For CPAP machines, heaters and compressors, account for startup and heating loads, which can be much higher than the average draw. Do not assume that an AC outlet, waveform description or battery capacity alone makes a station suitable for medically important equipment.
Manufacturer examples that show the range
The following figures are manufacturer-listed specifications for named models, not independent test results or category averages. Configurations can change, so verify the current listing before purchase.
| Example | Published capacity | Published outputs or features | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anker Prime Power Bank 20K | 20,100mAh / 72.36Wh | Two USB-C ports and one USB-A port | A USB-focused battery suitable for personal devices, subject to its exact output profiles |
| EcoFlow RIVER | 288Wh | 600W AC output; 11 pounds; wall and solar charging described | A compact station that adds AC capability while remaining relatively portable |
| EcoFlow DELTA | 1260Wh | Six AC outlets; 1800W total output | A substantially larger station aimed at outage, outdoor and professional-work use cases |
The figures demonstrate why a product name is not enough: the Anker example is measured in tens of watt-hours and USB outputs, while the cited station examples add AC inverters and much greater stored energy.
Can you fly with a power bank or portable power station?
For US passenger-aircraft travel, FAA guidance classifies rechargeable lithium batteries by watt-hours:
Best Value
- 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟑𝟓-𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩: With 6W idle power draw and 10% higher efficiency, this power station runs 20% longer than other 2kWh systems, keeping your fridge powered for 35 hours.

- 𝟔 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞: Supports up to 400W solar input. Power up via AC + solar, a wall outlet, a generator, solar panels, an alternator charger, or a car outlet—anytime, anywhere.
| Battery rating | FAA passenger guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 0–100Wh | Allowed within the applicable carry-on rules | Many ordinary power banks fall in this range, but confirm the label |
| 101–160Wh | Air-carrier approval is required | Contact the airline before arriving at the airport |
| Above 160Wh | Not permitted on passenger aircraft | Many large power stations cannot be taken on a passenger flight |
Spare lithium batteries, including power banks, must remain in the cabin rather than checked baggage. Airlines can impose stricter limits, and rules outside the United States may differ. Check the exact battery rating, your airline’s current policy and the departure jurisdiction before travel. Do not describe a station as airline-friendly solely because it is physically small.
How to calculate a travel battery’s rating
- Find the manufacturer’s Wh rating on the label or product documentation.
- If Wh is absent, identify the stated voltage and amp-hours.
- Multiply volts by amp-hours. If the label uses mAh, divide by 1,000 first.
- Use the resulting rating to check the FAA band and your airline’s policy.
Using an assumed voltage can produce the wrong result, so obtain the manufacturer’s value whenever possible.
Battery safety and thermal-runaway precautions
The FAA’s official PackSafe lithium-battery guidance warns: “Thermal runaway can occur without warning as a result of various factors, including if the battery is damaged, overheated, exposed to water, overcharged, or improperly protected.” Treat a swollen, cracked, leaking or unusually hot battery as a safety issue, not as a device to keep using until it is empty.
- Inspect the casing, ports and cable before use.
- Keep the battery dry and away from excessive heat, direct sun and combustible materials.
- Use the specified charger and cables, and do not cover ventilation openings while charging.
- Stop using a unit that swells, smokes, smells unusual or becomes abnormally hot.
- Follow the manufacturer’s storage charge and temperature guidance.
On an aircraft, notify the flight crew immediately if a battery or device overheats, expands, smokes or burns. Do not place a suspected failing battery in checked baggage or attempt to conceal a problem.
A practical buying checklist
- List every load. Record the connector, voltage and typical wattage for each device.
- Separate USB and AC needs. If everything charges by USB, an inverter may add unnecessary size and conversion losses.
- Estimate energy. Multiply each device’s average watts by the hours needed, then add a margin for charging losses and variability.
- Check output limits. Confirm continuous wattage, surge wattage and the exact USB-C PD profiles.
- Check capacity in Wh. Use the manufacturer’s rating and avoid comparing mAh numbers from different voltage systems as though they were equivalent.
- Check physical constraints. Compare mass, dimensions, handle design and noise if you will carry or use the unit nearby.
- Choose recharge inputs. Verify wall, vehicle and solar voltage/current limits and expected recharge time.
- Check travel eligibility. Calculate Wh and read the current airline policy before packing a lithium battery.
- Confirm safety features and warranty terms. Look for clear operating-temperature, charging and storage instructions.
Common problems and fixes
“My laptop is connected but still losing charge.”
Check the USB-C PD wattage and voltage profile against the laptop’s requirement. A low-power port may only slow discharge. If the laptop uses an AC adapter, compare the station’s continuous AC rating with the adapter’s input and try a different, compatible output.
“The station shuts down when I start an appliance.”
The appliance may exceed the continuous rating or its startup surge. Check both figures, reduce other connected loads and use a station designed for the appliance’s surge demand. Do not repeatedly reset an overloaded inverter.
“Solar charging is much slower than expected.”
Confirm panel voltage and current are within the station’s input range. Shade, angle, temperature and clouds reduce output, and the station may throttle input near its maximum. A panel’s peak rating is not a guaranteed charging rate.
Recommended Free Tools
“The power bank is not accepted at the airport.”
Ask for the battery’s Wh rating and show the manufacturer label or documentation. If it is above 100Wh, airline approval may be required; above 160Wh, it is not permitted on US passenger aircraft under the cited FAA guidance. Airline staff can apply stricter rules.
Bottom line: which should you buy?
Choose a power bank for compact USB charging of phones, tablets and compatible laptops. Choose a portable power station when you need AC outlets, multiple output types, higher continuous wattage or substantially more stored energy for camping and backup use. Compare Wh, watts, ports, recharge inputs, weight and travel rules for the exact model. Those specifications—not the marketing label—determine whether the battery will run your equipment safely and for the required time.
