The quickest estimate is runtime (hours) ≈ capacity (Wh) × 0.85 ÷ device power (W) for a typical AC load. A 1,000Wh portable power station running a steady 100W load therefore works out to about 8.5 hours (1,000 × 0.85 ÷ 100). That is a manufacturer rule of thumb, not a guaranteed or independently measured result. Actual time depends on the station, output path, load behavior and operating conditions.
To size a station safely, calculate both sides of the question: Wh tells you how long energy may last, while W tells you whether the station can deliver enough power through a suitable port in the first place.
Wh and W measure different things
Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy. A station rated at 1,000Wh has a larger energy reserve than one rated at 500Wh, so it can generally support the same load for longer. Wh is the number you use when estimating duration.
Recommended Free Tools
Watts (W) describe the rate at which a device consumes power. The station’s continuous output must meet or exceed the load’s draw. A large Wh rating does not make a low-output station suitable for a high-power appliance. Output ratings, startup or surge capability, and the port being used are separate checks.

For example, a 1,024Wh station such as the model listed on DJI’s official Power 1000 page is an illustration of capacity, not a universal recommendation. Whether it can run a particular appliance still depends on that appliance’s watts, startup demand and the station’s output and port limits.
Why the label capacity is not what an AC outlet delivers
The Wh figure is a rated battery capacity. When you use an AC outlet, the station’s inverter converts battery power into household-style alternating current, and conversion consumes some energy. The load therefore receives less than the nameplate capacity under normal conditions.
Anker SOLIX’s page, dated June 30, 2026, gives this quick estimate for typical AC loads:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

“For typical AC loads, use this quick estimate before choosing a size: Battery capacity (Wh) × 0.85 ÷ Device power (W).”
The 0.85 factor is a vendor rule of thumb. It is not an independently measured universal efficiency statistic, and it is not a promise that every model, port or operating condition will produce the same result. If the station’s manual gives a model-specific calculation, use that instead.

Calculate an estimated runtime step by step
- Record the station’s rated capacity. Find the Wh value in the specification sheet or manual. Use the capacity for the exact model and configuration, including any information about expansion batteries.
- Find the device’s average draw. Read the device label, specification sheet or manual. For an uncertain AC load, an optional plug-in watt meter can show the draw while the device is operating. A meter is a way to improve your input number; no particular meter model is required by this method.
- Add simultaneous loads. If a laptop, monitor and router will run together, add their watts before dividing. Use the combined average draw, not each device’s number separately.
- Choose the appropriate path. Apply the 0.85 estimate to a typical AC load only when no better, model-specific information is available. DC output can have different losses, so do not automatically apply an AC estimate to every DC port.
- Check output compatibility. Compare the combined running watts with the station’s continuous output rating. Check startup or surge demand and any restrictions on individual output ports in the model’s manual.
- Calculate hours and treat the result as an estimate. Divide the usable-energy estimate by average watts. Plan a margin rather than assuming the device will run until the display reaches exactly zero.
Worked runtime calculations
The following figures are arithmetic examples using Anker SOLIX’s 0.85 quick-estimate factor. They are calculations, not measured runtime tests.
| Station capacity | Average AC load | Calculation | Estimated runtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000Wh | 100W | 1,000 × 0.85 ÷ 100 | 8.5 hours |
| 500Wh | 50W | 500 × 0.85 ÷ 50 | 8.5 hours |
| 1,000Wh | 250W | 1,000 × 0.85 ÷ 250 | 3.4 hours |
| 2,000Wh | 400W | 2,000 × 0.85 ÷ 400 | 4.25 hours |
The first row is the commonly cited 1,000Wh/100W example. Doubling capacity while keeping the load constant doubles the estimated hours; doubling the load while keeping capacity constant halves them. Those relationships are useful for planning, but the numbers remain estimates under the stated AC assumption.

Suppose your average loads are 60W for a computer, 30W for a monitor and 10W for a router. The combined load is 100W, so a 1,000Wh station produces the same 8.5-hour estimate under the quick formula. If the computer later averages 90W, recalculate with 130W total rather than continuing to use the original figure.
A device that cycles
Some appliances switch on and off instead of drawing their maximum continuously. Use their average draw over the operating period. If a device alternates between 600W while active and 0W while idle, and its measured average is 300W, use 300W for the duration estimate. Do not treat the 600W peak as a continuous load unless it really is continuous.
Capacity alone cannot establish compatibility
A station can have enough Wh for many hours yet still fail to run a device if its inverter or port cannot supply the required watts. Before connecting a load, verify:

- Continuous output: the station’s sustained AC or DC rating must cover the device’s running draw and the draw of other devices operating at the same time.
- Startup or surge capability: motors and other equipment may demand more power when starting. Check the station’s stated surge rating and the appliance’s startup requirement.
- Port limits: individual AC sockets, USB outputs and DC ports can have their own restrictions. Goal Zero specifically advises checking restrictions on each output port.
- Connector and voltage: use the port type and voltage specified for the device. A capacity calculation cannot correct an incompatible connection.
Never infer that a device is compatible just because the station’s Wh number is larger than the device’s wattage. Wh answers duration; output and port specifications answer whether the load can run.
AC, DC and model-specific formulas
The quick 0.85 calculation is framed for typical AC loads. A device connected directly to a DC port may avoid the station’s AC inverter, while a device with its own adapter introduces another conversion stage. Because the losses differ, runtime can differ even when the device’s nominal wattage is unchanged.
Use the exact model’s documentation whenever it provides an equation or runtime table. The BLUETTI AC200MAX manual expresses operating time using capacity, depth of discharge, inverter efficiency and load power. That approach is more specific than applying a generic factor without checking the manual. Follow the manual’s definitions for each term and for the output mode you intend to use.
How to compare two stations for a real load
Compare the following fields side by side rather than choosing on Wh alone:
| Comparison point | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Rated capacity | Sets the energy available for a duration estimate. | Wh for the exact model and any stated configuration. |
| Continuous output | Determines whether the station can sustain the running load. | Maximum continuous W for the relevant output. |
| Startup or surge output | Determines whether a motor or other high-startup device can begin operating. | Surge W and its stated duration or conditions, if provided. |
| Ports and per-port limits | Determines whether the device can connect and whether a port bottleneck applies. | Port type, voltage and individual W limits. |
| Runtime assumptions | Explains why two advertised estimates may differ. | AC or DC path, discharge depth, efficiency factors and load assumptions. |
For example, two stations with similar Wh ratings can produce different results if one has a lower continuous inverter rating, stricter per-port limits or a different documented discharge depth. Compare like with like: the same output path and the same average load.

Measure an unknown load before buying capacity
When a device’s label lists only a maximum or a broad range, measure its real operating draw with an optional plug-in watt meter. Take readings during the conditions that matter: startup, normal operation and any high-load activity. For a cycling appliance, observe enough cycles to obtain a representative average. Then use that average in the runtime formula and separately check the highest observed or specified demand against the station’s output and surge ratings.
A meter improves the watt input; it does not measure the station’s remaining Wh directly. The station’s own display and manual may use different definitions for input, output and remaining capacity, so retain the model-specific guidance when interpreting those readings.
Common sizing mistakes and their fixes
Dividing Wh by the device’s peak watts
Problem: a peak value makes a cycling appliance appear to run for fewer hours than it normally will, while still failing to describe startup behavior accurately.
Fix: use average draw for duration and check peak or surge demand separately.
Ignoring other devices
Problem: calculating a laptop alone overlooks a monitor, network equipment or chargers sharing the station.

- Write down the exact station capacity in Wh.
- List every device that will run at the same time.
- Measure or estimate each device’s average W; use measured averages for cycling loads.
- Add those averages to get the simultaneous load.
- Estimate AC hours with Wh × 0.85 ÷ W only as a typical-load rule of thumb.
- Prefer a model-specific formula or runtime table when the manual provides one.
- Confirm continuous output, startup or surge capability and every relevant port limit.
- Recalculate if the device mix, operating mode or output path changes.
The reliable way to answer “how long will it run?” is therefore a two-part check: calculate duration from usable energy and average watts, then confirm that the station’s output and ports can actually start and sustain the devices. Treat every generic runtime as an estimate tied to its stated assumptions, not as a guarantee.
