Watt-hours (Wh) tell you how much energy a portable power station stores; watts (W) tell you how much power it can deliver at one time. Use Wh to estimate runtime and continuous output in W to determine whether the station can run your devices. Then check startup surge, port limits, voltage, frequency, temperature conditions and regional specifications before buying.

A large battery does not automatically run a high-demand appliance. A station can have ample Wh capacity but an inverter whose continuous or surge limit is below the appliance’s demand.

Wh and W answer different questions

Watt-hours measure stored energy

Capacity is expressed in watt-hours. A 1,024 Wh battery is rated to store substantially more energy than a 500 Wh battery, all else being equal. Wh is the figure used for a rough runtime calculation: load in watts multiplied by operating time in hours.

Rated capacity is not a promise that every watt-hour reaches an appliance. When you use an AC outlet, the battery’s direct-current energy passes through an inverter. Conversion losses, the station’s own standby consumption, discharge limits, temperature, battery age and the particular load can all reduce usable energy. USB and DC outputs may avoid some conversion steps, so their results can differ from AC operation.

Watts measure delivery rate

Output is expressed in watts and answers whether the station can supply a load at a given moment. Compare the combined running wattage of devices that will operate simultaneously with the station’s continuous output rating. Also check the separate limits for AC outlets, DC sockets, USB ports and any combined-output restriction.

Capacity and output are independent specifications. A high-Wh station with a modest inverter may run lights for a long time but fail to start a power tool. A lower-capacity station with a stronger inverter may start the tool but exhaust its battery sooner.

Continuous output versus surge output

Continuous output is the sustained limit

Continuous output is the level the inverter is designed to provide during normal operation. Add the running wattage of every device that will be on at the same time and keep the total below the applicable continuous rating. Leave practical headroom rather than selecting a station whose rating exactly matches your calculated load.

Surge covers short startup demand

Refrigerators, pumps, compressors, saws and other motor-driven equipment can draw considerably more power while starting than while running. A station may list a surge, peak or maximum output above its continuous figure. That higher number generally applies only for a short, specified period; it is not a sustained operating rating.

Find the appliance’s starting requirement in its manual, nameplate or manufacturer documentation and compare it with both the station’s surge rating and the duration for which that rating applies. If startup demand is not published, do not assume a large peak number will be sufficient. Look for measured device information or choose a station with substantial margin.

How to size a station step by step

  1. List the required devices. Record each appliance’s running wattage from its label or manual. If a device gives volts and amps instead, its nominal running power is approximately volts multiplied by amps; use the manufacturer’s stated wattage when available.
  2. Identify simultaneous loads. Add only the devices that must run at the same time. This sum is your starting continuous-output requirement. Include the station’s relevant AC, DC or USB limits rather than relying only on the headline output number.
  3. Mark motor and compressor loads. Check their startup demand and the station’s surge rating and rated duration. Treat an unspecified startup requirement as an uncertainty that calls for more capacity or device-specific measurement.
  4. Calculate energy demand. Multiply the combined load in watts by the desired operating hours. A 100 W load running for five hours has an idealized requirement of 500 Wh before losses.
  5. Add a planning margin. Anker SOLIX publishes the formula “Capacity needed (Wh) = total device wattage × hours of use × 1.2,” describing the 20% as a buffer for inverter-efficiency losses. This is that manufacturer’s rule of thumb, not a universal measured efficiency rate or a guaranteed runtime. For the 100 W, five-hour example, it produces a planning estimate of about 600 Wh.
  6. Match the output path. Decide whether the load will use AC, direct DC or USB. Conversion and standby losses differ, and a label capacity is not identical to guaranteed usable energy at every port.
  7. Check the complete specification. Confirm voltage, frequency, port-level limits, combined-output rules, recharge inputs, solar-input range, weight, warranty and support for the exact model sold in your country.

Estimating real runtime

The simple equation is:

ideal runtime (hours) = capacity (Wh) ÷ load (W)

For example, dividing a nominal 600 Wh capacity by a constant 100 W load gives six ideal hours. That result assumes all rated energy is usable and ignores conversion and standby consumption, so actual AC runtime can be lower. Variable loads make the estimate less direct: a refrigerator cycles rather than drawing its rated running wattage continuously, while a charger may taper as a battery fills.

Use the equation as a planning baseline, then account for the output route, environmental conditions, battery condition and any published discharge limits. No category-wide conversion-efficiency figure has been established that can responsibly guarantee runtime across different models.

Model example Capacity Continuous output Maximum or surge figures Important qualification
DJI Power 1000 1,024 Wh 2,200 W maximum continuous output for listed versions 2,600 W maximum output; 4,400 W peak output DJI states the 2,200 W continuous figure at 25°C and says output data varies by country and region. The Japanese version is listed with a 2,000 W continuous limit.
Goal Zero Yeti 700 Not stated in the cited specification summary 600 W AC 1,000 W surge The figures demonstrate the difference between sustained and short-duration output; they are not a category-wide performance benchmark.

Do not compare the 1,024 Wh capacity in the first example directly with the 600 W output in the second as though they were interchangeable measurements. One describes stored energy and the other describes delivery rate. For each candidate, read the exact country-specific specification and the conditions attached to the number.

Which specifications matter when comparing models

Specification Why it matters What to verify
Capacity (Wh) Sets the energy budget and influences potential runtime. Whether the figure is nominal, usable under a stated test, or subject to discharge limits.
Continuous output (W) Determines the sustained load the inverter can support. AC rating, temperature condition and whether the number applies to the whole station or one output.
Surge or peak output Supports brief motor or compressor startup demand. Duration, triggering conditions and the appliance’s actual startup requirement.
Voltage and frequency Determines whether AC equipment is compatible. The version sold in your region and the appliance’s required voltage and frequency.
Port and combined limits Several ports may share an internal limit even when the headline output is higher. Per-port wattage, total DC or USB limit and AC-plus-DC restrictions.
Charging inputs Controls how quickly and where the station can be recharged. AC input, vehicle charging, solar voltage range, connector and maximum solar wattage.
Weight and portability A larger battery and inverter usually affect transport practicality. Actual mass, handles, dimensions and the way you intend to move it.
Battery chemistry, safety and support Affects operating characteristics, protection features and ownership risk. The manufacturer’s chemistry disclosure, protection systems, warranty and regional service.

Voltage, frequency and regional versions

Output ratings can change between markets. AC equipment designed for one voltage or frequency may not operate correctly on another, even if its wattage is within the station’s limit. Confirm the station’s AC voltage and frequency, the appliance requirements and the model designation for your country.

DJI’s Power 1000 specification is a concrete example: the listed 2,200 W continuous figure is qualified at 25°C, while the Japanese version is listed at 2,000 W. A product page from another region is not a substitute for the local specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solar and other recharge options

Solar charging can extend time away from the grid, but a panel is compatible only when its voltage, connector and wattage fall within the exact station’s solar-input specification. Check the station’s allowable input range and maximum power before connecting a panel. A panel should be treated as an accessory that requires model-specific matching, not as a universal add-on.

Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them

Using Wh as though it were a watt limit

Symptom: A station has enough calculated energy but will not run a high-wattage appliance. Fix: Check continuous AC output and the appliance’s running wattage before considering capacity.

Ignoring startup demand

Symptom: A motor appliance clicks off or the station overloads when it starts. Fix: Compare measured or manufacturer-listed startup demand with surge rating and duration; do not rely on the peak number alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding every device instead of simultaneous devices

Symptom: The selected station is unnecessarily large and heavy. Fix: Add only concurrent loads for the output calculation, then calculate Wh separately for the total time each device will operate.

Assuming nominal capacity equals AC runtime

Symptom: Actual runtime is shorter than capacity divided by appliance wattage. Fix: Allow for inverter loss, standby use, temperature, battery condition and discharge limits; direct DC or USB operation may have different losses.

Copying a rating from the wrong region

Symptom: The local model has a different voltage or output limit from an overseas listing. Fix: Use the exact country-specific product specification and verify frequency as well as wattage.

A practical decision checklist

  • Write down every essential device and its running wattage.
  • Calculate the simultaneous running load and compare it with continuous output.
  • Identify motors, compressors and heating elements that may need startup or sustained high power.
  • Check surge rating and duration for motorized loads.
  • Multiply watts by hours for an initial Wh estimate, then apply a clearly identified planning margin.
  • Determine whether each load uses AC, DC or USB and review the relevant port limits.
  • Verify local voltage, frequency, temperature conditions and regional output figures.
  • Confirm charging methods, solar-input compatibility, weight, safety features and warranty.

The safest choice is the smallest station that meets the required continuous output and startup demand with sensible headroom, while providing enough usable energy for the intended hours. If either output or capacity is marginal, the station may fail in two different ways: it can overload immediately or run out of energy before the job is complete.
