The right portable photo printer depends first on the print you want: pocket-size stickers, instant-film keepsakes, or 4-by-6-inch photos. Those formats come with different image quality, media costs, and carrying requirements, so there is no single best choice for everyone. The five models below are useful options to compare by use case—not a universal ranking.
Start with the print format
Compact photo printers range from pocketable devices that make small prints to larger machines that approach home-printer output. A printer may be easy to carry on its own but less convenient once you add its paper, film, battery, or paper tray.
- Small sticker prints: Choose a 2-by-3-inch or similarly compact format for phone photos you want to peel and stick.
- Instant-film keepsakes: Instax prints have a distinctive film appearance. Mini, Square, and Wide are different formats, and film packs are not interchangeable.
- Larger photos: A 4-by-6-inch printer makes more substantial prints, but its battery and paper setup can add bulk.
Paper dimensions are not always the same as the image area. Check the finished print size and whether the media has borders before buying.

These models represent different formats and tradeoffs. The specifications and judgments below come from the cited manufacturer pages or the 2026 Digital Camera World guide; they are not results of independent hands-on testing for this article.

Canon SELPHY QX20: compact dye-sublimation prints
The QX20 is a small dye-sublimation printer with a built-in rechargeable battery and integrated paper tray, according to Canon U.S.A. It accepts card-size XC-20L paper measuring 2.1 × 3.4 inches and square XS-20L paper measuring 2.7 × 2.7 inches. Those formats suit small keepsakes rather than standard 4-by-6-inch prints.
Canon’s U.S. store currently marks the product unavailable through that store. That does not establish whether it is available from other retailers or in other regions, so check the exact model and compatible paper SKU locally.
Canon SELPHY CP1500: 4-by-6-inch output
The CP1500 supports dye-sublimation printing on 4-by-6-inch and smaller formats. Canon lists Wi-Fi, AirPrint, USB, memory-card, and app printing on its U.S. product page. It is the option here for buyers who prioritize larger prints over pocketability.

Battery operation requires the optional NB-CP2LH battery. Canon rates that battery for up to 54 prints per charge; this is a manufacturer rating, not a guarantee of real-world output in every use. Account for the extra battery and paper-tray bulk when judging the complete carry setup.
Canon says CP1500 prints emerge dry and water-resistant and claims longevity of up to 100 years, subject to the conditions described in its product-page footnote. Treat that as a manufacturer claim, not a promise for prints stored in every environment.
Fujifilm Instax Mini Link+: small real-film prints
The Mini Link+ makes small Instax Mini film prints rather than conventional photo-paper prints. Digital Camera World lists a 54 × 86 mm print, 240 g weight, Bluetooth, and iOS and Android support. Its guide estimates 20 sheets at about $23 / £14.05, or roughly $1.15 / 70p per print; those are the guide’s cited media-price estimates, not guaranteed current local prices.

The small output and comparatively high per-print cost are important tradeoffs if you plan to print often. Fujifilm’s smartphone printer range page describes the Mini Link 3, but that is a separately named model. Confirm app and device compatibility for the exact Mini Link+ model rather than assuming details for the Link 3 also apply.
Polaroid Hi-Print 2×3: pocket-size option
Digital Camera World calls the Hi-Print 2×3 the most compact pick in its roundup. The available source details do not establish enough primary-source technical specifications or cartridge information for a fuller comparison. Before buying, verify the current model, its phone compatibility, and the exact media it uses.
Canon Ivy 2: peel-and-stick Zink prints
The Ivy 2 prints 2-by-3-inch photos on Zink paper, which has color-forming material embedded in the paper and does not require a separate ink refill. Digital Camera World lists Bluetooth, a weight of 177 g, and an estimated media cost of about 60¢ per print at the pack price cited in its guide. These are guide-reported figures, not independent measurements or a current price guarantee.

The guide identifies frequent recharging and weaker image quality than dye-sublimation as tradeoffs. Consider it if peel-and-stick convenience matters more than a conventional photo finish.
How the print technologies differ
Dye-sublimation
Dye-sublimation printers use paper and dye ribbon together. Canon identifies this technology in both SELPHY models. Digital Camera World places dye-sub toward the higher-fidelity end of portable printing, making it a sensible direction to consider if photo appearance matters more than the smallest possible printer or the lowest media cost.

Zink
Zink paper contains the material that forms the print, so separate ink refills are not used. The cited guide describes Zink as generally cheaper to run than dye-sub but often less faithful in image quality. Actual value depends on the compatible paper price where you live and how much you print.

Instant film
Instax printers expose film packs to create prints with an analog character. The format and appearance differ from photo-paper prints, and the guide notes that the per-print cost is higher. Match the printer to the correct Mini, Square, or Wide film rather than choosing by brand alone.

Use the comparison as a shortlist, then check the full carry kit and ongoing media supply. For a printer that uses an optional battery, distinguish the printer’s own portability from untethered operation; for every model, confirm the compatible paper, film, or cartridge SKU and its current local availability.

- Check supply availability. A low printer price is of little use if its proprietary media is difficult to source where you live.
