Short answer: portable photo printers are not interchangeable when it comes to paper, batteries or expected print life. Canon’s SELPHY QX20, for example, accepts only its documented XS-20L square sticker paper and XC-20L/XC-60L card-format sticker-paper sets. It prints in about 40 seconds, charges through USB-C, and takes approximately 80 minutes to charge from empty under normal conditions. Canon states a 100-year print-longevity figure, but also warns that actual results depend on the image, display and storage conditions. Store both unused media and finished photos indoors, away from sustained heat, humidity, direct light and dirty handling.
What paper works in a portable photo printer?
Paper compatibility is model-specific. A printer that looks like it uses ordinary photographic paper may actually require a proprietary cartridge or sheet set in which the paper and ink system are designed to work together.
For the Canon SELPHY QX20, Canon documents three compatible media sets:

These are integrated ink-and-paper consumables. Generic photo paper is not documented as compatible with the QX20, so do not substitute sheets from another printer or ordinary photo paper simply because the dimensions look similar. The printer’s feed mechanism, coating and color-transfer process are designed around the specified sets.

How many sheets can you load?
The QX20 feed accepts up to 10 sheets. Loading fewer sheets is sensible when you are making only a small number of photos, but never exceed the stated limit. Overfilling can interfere with feeding and makes it harder to keep the sheets aligned.
Which side faces down?
Load the media with the printing surface facing down. Avoid touching that surface; fingerprints, skin oils and dust can affect the finished image. Handle the sheets by their edges and keep the unused stack clean until it goes into the printer.
How to load paper and make a reliable print
- Confirm the media code. Check that the package is XS-20L, XC-20L or XC-60L before opening it. The format you want determines whether you need square or card media.
- Prepare a clean work area. Keep food, liquids, loose fibers and abrasive objects away from the sheets. Do not bend the stack or touch the printable surface.
- Load no more than 10 sheets. Place the stack in the feed according to the QX20 manual, with the printing surface down. Do not force a stack that does not sit flat.
- Check the image and format in the printer’s control software. Select the square or card layout that matches the loaded media. A mismatch can crop the image or leave an unintended border.
- Start the print and keep the output path clear. The QX20 takes approximately 40 seconds per print according to Canon’s specification. Leave room for the sheet to move through the printer and do not pull on it while it is feeding.
- Handle the finished photo by its edges. Give the surface a moment to settle, then place it on a clean, flat surface or apply the sticker backing only when you are ready to mount it.
If a sheet does not feed, stop rather than pushing it farther into the mechanism. Remove power only as instructed by the manual, inspect for an overloaded stack or incorrectly oriented media, and reload within the 10-sheet limit. Persistent feeding errors require the model’s service instructions rather than improvised tools.

Battery life, charging time and print speed
The QX20 has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery and charges through USB-C. Canon’s regional specification gives an approximate full-charge time of 80 minutes from zero. That is a charging-time specification, not a promise of a particular number of prints per charge.

Charging procedure
- Connect the USB-C cable to the printer and a compatible power source.
- Allow the printer to charge fully before a long session, especially if it has been stored for an extended period.
- If the battery was completely depleted after storage, allow for the approximately four-hour recovery period described in the manual rather than assuming the usual 80-minute time.
- Keep the charging area ventilated and dry. Disconnect and follow Canon’s support guidance if the unit becomes unusually hot, shows physical damage or will not accept a charge.
Planning for travel or events
Because Canon does not publish a universal prints-per-charge figure for this model, estimate your session by the number of sheets you actually carry, then bring a USB-C charging option. A full battery is useful insurance, but it does not remove the need to pack enough compatible media. Remember that the feed holds only 10 sheets at a time, so larger batches require repeated loading.
How durable are the printed photos?
Canon publishes “100 years” as a print-longevity figure for the current QX20 specification. Treat that number as a manufacturer-stated or predicted result under particular test and storage assumptions, not as a guarantee that every photograph will remain unchanged for a century.

The qualification matters because longevity depends on more than the printer. The image itself, the amount and type of light it receives, temperature, humidity, airborne contaminants and handling can all influence visible change. A photo kept in a stable indoor album is not exposed to the same stresses as one left on a sunny dashboard or in a damp room.
What the 100-year figure does and does not mean
- It is a Canon specification for the QX20, not a universal rating for all portable photo printers.
- It does not establish a guaranteed shelf life for every print, sticker or application surface.
- It should not be read as proof that colors, contrast and paper condition will remain identical in every environment.
- It is most useful as a comparison point when other manufacturers publish their own test-based longevity information with comparable conditions.
How to store unused paper and finished prints
The reviewed Canon documentation does not provide one universal shelf-life period or a single storage-temperature number for QX20 media or prints. You should therefore avoid promises such as “the paper lasts X years” or “the photo is safe at Y degrees” unless a current package or manual gives that exact value.

Unused paper
- Keep unopened media in its original packaging until needed.
- Store it indoors in a stable, dry location away from prolonged heat and high humidity.
- Keep the sheets flat and protected from dust, bending and direct sunlight.
- Separate square and card-format packs so the wrong media is not loaded accidentally.
- Discard or set aside sheets that are visibly dirty, creased or damaged instead of forcing them through the feed.
Finished photos
- Choose a cool, dry indoor location with stable conditions.
- Limit prolonged direct light, especially strong sunlight, if you want to reduce fading risk.
- Keep prints away from condensation, damp storage areas and sustained heat.
- Handle the image surface by the edges and use clean, dry hands.
- For long-term keeping, place photos in an album, box or other enclosure that prevents rubbing and limits exposure to dust and light.
These are risk-reduction practices, not a replacement for Canon’s qualification. Environmental exposure can still produce different results from one print to another.
How the QX20 compares with the questions you should ask about any portable printer
When comparing models, focus on the media system rather than the printer’s size alone. The following checklist uses the QX20’s documented specifications as a reference and identifies what remains model-specific elsewhere.

Troubleshooting common portable-printer questions
“My generic paper will not work.”
That is expected when the model uses integrated consumables. For the QX20, use only the documented XS-20L, XC-20L or XC-60L sets. Check the package code and format before loading anything; do not trim ordinary paper to approximate the supported size.

“The printer says the paper is wrong.”
Confirm that the selected layout matches the loaded square or card media, that the stack is below 10 sheets and that the printable surface faces down. Remove visibly damaged sheets. If the error remains, consult the QX20 manual or Canon support rather than repeatedly cycling the same stack.
“The battery seems to charge slowly.”
An approximately 80-minute full charge applies to a normal empty battery. A battery that was fully discharged during initial or extended storage may take approximately four hours, according to the manual. Leave it connected for that recovery period before judging the battery or charger.
“Will my photo really last 100 years?”
The 100-year number is Canon’s stated longevity figure, not a universal guarantee. Protect the print from sustained heat, humidity and direct light, and keep handling clean. The final result varies with the image and its environment.

Use a stable indoor location, preferably an album or enclosure that limits light, dust and rubbing. Canon does not publish one universal storage temperature or shelf-life number for this model, so avoid treating any unverified figure as official.
Practical buying decision
The QX20 suits someone who wants a small, battery-powered printer with two sticker formats and accepts the ongoing use of model-specific media. Its documented strengths are clear format choices, USB-C charging and an approximately 40-second print time. Its trade-offs are the proprietary integrated consumables, a 10-sheet feed limit and the absence of a published prints-per-charge figure.
If your priority is inexpensive, widely interchangeable paper, verify compatibility before buying: the QX20 is not documented for generic photo paper. If your priority is keeping photos for years, compare each manufacturer’s test conditions and storage caveats instead of selecting a printer on a longevity number alone.
