Yes. Portable internet is a practical name for ways to get online away from a fixed home connection: share cellular data from a phone, use a dedicated mobile hotspot, or—where specialized service is available—connect through portable satellite equipment. In each case, Wi-Fi is usually just the short-range link from the connection source to your laptop or other devices; the source still needs internet service and coverage.
What “portable internet” means
Portable internet is not one universal network or a single kind of product. It describes access you can use away from a fixed broadband line. The connection may come from a cellular network, satellite service, or a nearby public Wi-Fi network. These options differ in where they work, what service they require, and whether you carry a device that supplies the connection.
The Federal Communications Commission uses a more specific definition for the E-Rate program: a Wi-Fi hotspot is “a device (sometimes referred to as a ‘mobile hotspot’ or ‘portable hotspot device’) that is intended to provide Wi-Fi connectivity to a hotspot user as its sole function.” That definition is limited to the E-Rate program, rather than a general definition of every way to access the internet on the go. FCC 24-76, E-Rate Support for Wi-Fi Hotspots (2024).

Share your phone’s cellular connection
A smartphone with mobile data can share that connection with a laptop, tablet, or other nearby device through its hotspot or tethering feature. The phone acts as the connection source and creates a local Wi-Fi connection. Whether hotspot use is enabled and how much data it can use depend on the phone and carrier plan.

Use a dedicated cellular hotspot
A dedicated mobile hotspot is separate hardware that connects to a cellular network and creates Wi-Fi for other devices. Verizon distinguishes this type of device from the hotspot feature or app built into a smartphone or tablet. Its device FAQ says a dedicated hotspot needs an eligible plan and a strong network signal; device compatibility and plan eligibility should be checked with the carrier. Verizon: Mobile hotspot device FAQs.
A separate unit may suit someone who wants to leave the phone available for calls or avoid using the phone as the hotspot, but battery life and the number of supported connections depend on the specific device. These are considerations to compare, not guaranteed advantages of every model.

Use satellite-connected portable equipment
Portable satellite-connected equipment is another category. Thuraya describes its WE product as a satellite/LTE hotspot that can share Wi-Fi with multiple devices. Its page sits in a legacy-products section, so current availability, coverage, prices, and service terms are not established by that page; verify them with the provider before treating it as a purchase option. Connect to public Wi-Fi
A café, hotel, or other venue’s Wi-Fi can provide internet access while you are away from home. This is portable in the everyday sense, but it is tied to that location and is not an independent connection you carry with you.

How to choose an option that will work where you need it
- List the places you need to connect. Check provider coverage for those specific locations, and consider whether you will use the connection indoors, outdoors, or while moving. The FCC National Broadband Map shows provider-reported mobile coverage areas where consumers should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle; its mobile map does not show indoor coverage. A coverage map is a starting point, not a guarantee of performance inside a building. FCC: How to Use the National Broadband Map.
- Confirm device and plan compatibility. Check that the hotspot works with the selected network and that the plan permits hotspot use. For a dedicated device, Verizon says an eligible plan and strong signal are required. Verizon: Mobile hotspot device FAQs.
- Read the data and speed terms. Compare the plan’s allowance and what happens after any premium or high-speed data amount is used. Plan features, prices, and eligibility vary and can change; Verizon’s connected-device FAQ is an example of carrier-specific plan conditions, not a market-wide standard. Verizon: Connected device plans FAQs.
- Check international roaming before travel. Confirm availability and charges for the destination, and whether a travel add-on or particular plan is required. Rogers warns that international use can incur roaming charges without an applicable travel pack or plan; that is Rogers-specific guidance, not a universal tariff. Rogers: Where can I connect to the internet using a mobile internet device?
- Match the setup to your devices and routine. Consider how many devices and people need to connect, whether you want to preserve your phone’s battery, how often you will use the hotspot, and whether carrying and charging a separate unit is worthwhile. Check the chosen model’s battery and connection limits rather than assuming they are the same across devices.
Does a portable hotspot include internet service?
No. A hotspot device provides a way to share a connection, but cellular models still need compatible service, an eligible plan, and usable network coverage. Buying the device alone does not establish that it includes data service. Satellite equipment likewise depends on the provider’s service and coverage terms. Public Wi-Fi is different: the venue supplies the connection, and access depends on what that venue offers.

For U.S. mobile coverage, the FCC National Broadband Map is useful for comparing reported provider coverage in a location. Its mobile coverage information describes expected connection outdoors or in a moving vehicle, not indoor reception. Walls, the precise location, network conditions, and the device can affect whether a connection works in practice, so a map should not be treated as a promise of service at a particular desk, room, or travel stop. FCC: How to Use the National Broadband Map.
