Choose a window air conditioner when you have a compatible, permitted window and can install it securely. Consumer Reports’ buying guidance finds that portable models generally cool less effectively, cost more, use more energy and make more indoor noise than similarly sized window units. Choose a portable model when your window, lease or building rules prevent a window installation, or when keeping the window usable is important. Both types still need a way to reject heat outdoors; a portable unit is not ductless.

The decision in one minute

Your situation Best starting point What to verify
A standard compatible window and permission to install an air conditioner Window AC Opening dimensions, electrical capacity, support, sealing and drainage instructions
The window type, lease or building rules rule out a window unit Portable AC That the supplied exhaust panel fits the window and that the hose can reach it without sharp bends
You want the window to remain partly open or want the compressor outside the room U-shaped or saddle-style window AC The actual model’s window range, support requirements and sound information
A very sunny room, kitchen, unusually high ceiling or more than two regular occupants Either type, sized carefully Apply the relevant capacity adjustments rather than buying the largest unit

Installation feasibility is the first filter. Cooling performance, energy use, noise and convenience matter only after the appliance can be installed safely and legally.

How the two designs work

Window air conditioner

A window unit places its indoor heat exchanger and fan toward the room while the compressor and outdoor heat exchanger sit outside the window opening. It removes heat from indoor air and releases that heat outdoors through the portion of the cabinet outside the building envelope. Because the compressor is outside, less mechanical noise is produced in the room than by a portable unit of similar nominal capacity.

The cabinet must be supported and sealed in the opening. Gaps around the sides, an unlevel installation or missing insulation let cooled air escape and warm outdoor air enter. ENERGY STAR advises following the supplied insulation instructions and leveling the unit; the exact bracket, sash and drainage requirements depend on the model and window.

Portable air conditioner

A portable unit sits on the floor and connects to an outdoor exhaust route, normally through a supplied window panel. The hose carries heat and exhaust air outside. The appliance therefore still changes the building envelope: the window or another approved opening must accommodate the panel or duct.

In a single-hose design, Consumer Reports explains that the appliance uses conditioned room air to cool its mechanical components and then exhausts that air outdoors. This creates negative pressure, which can pull warm, unconditioned air into the room through cracks and other openings. That mechanism should not be assumed for every portable design; check whether a model uses one hose, two hoses or another arrangement and read its installation instructions.

Cooling capacity: why the BTU number can mislead

Do not compare two headline BTU figures as if they represented identical real-world cooling. The U.S. Department of Energy specifies a portable-air-conditioner test method at 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix CC. Consumer Reports notes that portable and window ratings are not directly comparable because the rating bases and test conditions differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing models, record the rating basis printed on each specification sheet, not just the large number on the box. Ask whether the figure is a DOE seasonally adjusted cooling capacity, an older nominal rating or another manufacturer value. A portable unit and a window unit with the same stated BTU can therefore deliver different useful cooling in the same room.

Capacity is not a substitute for a proper installation. A powerful unit with an open window gap, an excessively long hose or a poorly sealed panel can perform worse than a smaller unit that is correctly fitted.

How to size an air conditioner for your room

Use room area as a starting point, then adjust for conditions. ENERGY STAR’s general guidance assumes an 8-foot ceiling and lists these examples:

Room area Starting capacity
100–150 square feet 5,000 Btu/h
150–250 square feet 6,000 Btu/h
250–300 square feet 7,000 Btu/h
300–350 square feet 8,000 Btu/h

The complete ENERGY STAR chart extends from 5,000 to 34,000 Btu/h and covers rooms through 2,000–2,500 square feet. Those are program examples, not a replacement for the selected model’s instructions or a detailed cooling-load calculation.

Apply the room-condition adjustments

  • Heavy shade: reduce the starting capacity by 10%.
  • Very sunny room: increase the starting capacity by 10%.
  • Occupancy: add 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two.
  • Kitchen: add 4,000 Btu/h.

Oversizing is not harmless. A unit that is too large can reach its target temperature quickly and cycle off before removing enough humidity, leaving the room cool but clammy. Undersizing can make the compressor run continuously and still fail to reach the setpoint. Measure the room, consider the adjustments, then confirm the manufacturer’s permitted capacity and installation limits.

Energy efficiency and running cost

For comparable room conditions, Consumer Reports’ buying guidance favors window units: portable models are generally less efficient and more expensive to operate. The single-hose negative-pressure effect can add to the cooling burden by drawing in warm air. Efficiency still varies substantially by model, so compare the current efficiency metric and estimated annual energy use on the product’s required label rather than relying on the form factor alone.

A U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program example updated in December 2024 illustrates why model efficiency matters. Under its explicit assumptions—12,000 Btu/h room air conditioners, 750 operating hours per year, a nine-year product life and federal-facility electricity prices of 11.1 cents per kilowatt-hour as of July 2024—the modeled annual use was 584 kWh for the best-available example, 612 kWh for its ENERGY STAR example and 826 kWh for a less-efficient example. The corresponding modeled annual electricity costs were $64, $67 and $91.

DOE said in a March 2023 rule announcement that the typical new room air conditioner uses 39% less energy than its 1990 counterpart. The same announcement projected approximately $1.5 billion per year in electricity-bill savings and 106 million metric tons of carbon-dioxide reductions over 30 years across the covered product categories. Those projections apply to the rule’s combined categories, not to one window unit or one household.

Noise and comfort

A portable AC keeps its compressor and other mechanical components inside the room, so it is usually noisier where you sleep, work or watch television. Window units place the compressor outside the room, although the indoor fan and vibration can still be audible.

Some ENERGY STAR-listed window designs use a U-shaped or saddle configuration. These models can preserve the ability to open and close part of the window and place more of the compressor outside the room. Variable-speed compressors can provide quieter, steadier temperature control and improved efficiency. These are model-specific features, not universal properties of every window unit; check the actual sound information and installation diagram.

Window, floor and seasonal footprint

Window AC footprint

A window unit occupies the opening and remains visible from outside. It keeps floor space clear, but it may block the window, require a support bracket and need seasonal removal in climates where you do not use cooling for part of the year. Measure the opening’s width, height and sill depth, and check whether the window slides vertically or horizontally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Portable AC footprint

A portable unit occupies floor space and remains visible inside, while its window panel and hose occupy part of the opening. It can be rolled away or stored more easily than a permanently supported window cabinet, but the exhaust assembly must be installed whenever the unit operates. A hose that is stretched, sharply bent or routed through an unsuitable opening can restrict airflow and reduce performance.

Installation: step-by-step checks

Before buying either type

  1. Measure the room and note ceiling height, sun exposure, kitchen use and the number of regular occupants.
  2. Measure the candidate window in the directions required by the model: opening width, opening height, sill depth and sash travel.
  3. Check your lease, condominium rules, historic-district requirements or building policy for exterior equipment, brackets and open windows.
  4. Confirm the electrical requirements, including voltage, plug type, circuit guidance and whether an extension cord is prohibited.
  5. Inspect the sill, frame and surrounding wall for damage that could prevent a secure, level installation.

Installing a window unit

  1. Read the model’s installation manual before lifting the cabinet. Confirm the permitted window type and minimum and maximum opening dimensions.
  2. Install the supplied brackets, rails or supports exactly as shown. Do not substitute improvised supports for hardware specified by the manufacturer.
  3. Set the unit so it is level in the direction required by the manual. Incorrect tilt can affect drainage and stability.
  4. Extend the side panels or insulation pieces to close gaps. Seal the perimeter as instructed so cooled air does not leak around the cabinet.
  5. Secure the sash and any safety fasteners, then verify that the cabinet cannot shift when the window is operated.
  6. Connect power only after the installation is complete, and test cooling, fan operation, drainage and unusual vibration.

Installing a portable unit

  1. Place the appliance on a level floor with the clearance specified by the manual. Keep air inlets and outlets unobstructed.
  2. Assemble the supplied exhaust hose and window panel. Confirm that the panel matches a vertical, horizontal or sliding window as applicable.
  3. Seal unused portions of the opening around the panel. A loose panel allows hot outdoor air and insects into the room.
  4. Route the hose with the fewest bends and without crushing, extending or modifying it unless the manufacturer explicitly allows that configuration.
  5. Connect any drain hose or empty the condensate reservoir as directed. Different models use different drainage arrangements.
  6. Run the unit and check for air leaks, error messages, water accumulation, excessive vibration and stable exhaust airflow.

For sliding windows, compatibility is model-specific. A panel designed for a sash window may not seal a horizontal slider or a much wider opening. Look for the manufacturer’s stated window range and an approved adapter rather than assuming a universal fit.

Purchase and installation cost

The appliance price is only one part of the cost. Consumer Reports’ guidance places portable models above similarly sized window units on purchase and operating cost in general, while a window installation may require a bracket, assistance with lifting or paid seasonal removal. A portable installation can avoid exterior brackets but may require a compatible sealing panel, adapter or replacement hose.

Because prices, electrical work and local labor vary by model and region, there is no honest universal dollar difference. Compare the complete first-season cost: appliance, approved support or window kit, any professional installation, electricity at your tariff and storage or removal needs. A local utility may offer rebates through an ENERGY STAR rebate finder, but eligibility, qualifying models and amounts vary; verify the current terms before treating a rebate as part of your budget.

You rent and the lease bans window units

A portable AC may be the practical alternative if the lease allows a sealed exhaust panel. Confirm the building’s rules for modifying a window and make sure the panel can be removed without permanent changes.

Your window is a horizontal slider or casement style

Do not assume a standard window cabinet will fit. Check for a model explicitly approved for that opening; otherwise compare portable units with an exhaust panel or an accessory designed for the actual window geometry.

You need to open the window occasionally

Investigate a U-shaped or saddle-style window model whose design preserves part of the window’s operation. Verify the exact opening range, weather sealing and structural support before purchase.

The room is a sunny kitchen or has several occupants

Use the ENERGY STAR adjustments rather than simply selecting the next-largest product. Kitchen heat, direct sun and occupancy can materially increase the load, while an oversized unit can remove less humidity.

Maintenance and troubleshooting

Weak cooling

  • Confirm that the selected capacity and rating basis are appropriate for the room.
  • Clean or replace filters according to the manual.
  • Check that a window cabinet is sealed and level or that a portable panel and hose have no leaks or crushing.
  • Close doors and windows in the cooled zone and reduce direct solar gain with blinds or shades.

Room feels cool but damp

The unit may be oversized or cycling off too quickly. Recheck the room-area calculation and adjustments; do not automatically increase capacity.

Portable unit blows warm air back into the room

  • Inspect the hose connection and panel seal.
  • Make sure the hose is not disconnected, sharply kinked or recirculating exhaust.
  • Check the condensate instructions and any full-tank warning.

Window unit vibrates or leaks

  • Turn it off and verify that the cabinet and brackets match the manual.
  • Recheck level, fasteners, side seals and the sash lock.
  • Do not continue operating a cabinet that is shifting or inadequately supported.

Noise is unacceptable

Check whether the sound is normal fan operation, vibration from an uneven installation or a mechanical fault. A model with a compressor inside the room will generally have a higher indoor noise burden than a window design with the compressor outside; consult the manufacturer if measured or described sound levels do not match expectations.

What the current DOE rules mean for buyers

DOE’s portable-air-conditioner page identifies the test method in 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix CC. Standards established in the 2020 final rule have been required since January 10, 2025. DOE also lists a May 16, 2025 proposed notice to withdraw its earlier determination that portable air conditioners qualify as covered products. A proposal is not a final change, so use the current labeling, compliance information and manufacturer documentation for a product you are buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The existence of a regulatory test method does not make portable and window BTU labels interchangeable. It tells you how the portable category is evaluated; you still need to compare each product using its stated rating basis and efficiency information.

A practical buying checklist

  • Permission: Is exterior equipment, a bracket or a window panel allowed?
  • Fit: Do the opening dimensions and window movement match the installation diagram?
  • Capacity: Did you account for area, sun, occupants, kitchen heat and ceiling height?
  • Rating: Are you comparing the same kind of capacity and efficiency metric?
  • Sealing: Can every gap around the cabinet or exhaust panel be insulated and secured?
  • Noise: Where are the compressor and fan located, and what sound information does the model provide?
  • Electrical: Does the circuit meet the manual’s requirements without an unsafe extension-cord setup?
  • Water: What drainage or condensate-emptying routine does the model require?
  • Seasonal plan: Can you remove, store and reinstall the appliance safely?
  • Total cost: Have you included accessories, installation, electricity and possible removal?

For most rooms with an allowed, compatible opening, a correctly sized and sealed window AC is the sensible starting point. A portable AC earns its place when installation restrictions, window geometry or the need to preserve access outweigh its typical efficiency, noise and cooling disadvantages.
