A port-forwarding rule tells your router to send matching incoming internet traffic on a specified port and protocol to a chosen device on your local network. The rule does not start the service on that device: the app or server must be running, listening on the right port, and allowed through the device’s firewall. The connection must also be able to reach your router’s public address.

What port forwarding does

A router normally keeps unsolicited inbound connections from reaching devices on your home network. Port forwarding creates a specific exception: when traffic arrives at the router on a configured port and protocol, the router directs it to a designated local device and port. Google describes the rule as matching a specified port to a chosen device; other router interfaces may let you set additional matching details.

The rule is scoped to that traffic and destination. It does not expose every device on the network, and it does not make a service available by itself. If you are asking “What is port forwarding?” or “How do I open a port on my router?”, the key distinction is that you configure a route through the router, not a way to launch or repair the application.

What must be in place for a connection to work

  • The correct port and protocol: Use the port number and TCP, UDP, or both specified by the service’s documentation. Do not guess. Depending on the router, external and internal port fields may be separate.
  • A working service on the destination device: The app or server must be running and listening on the configured port. The device’s firewall must allow the connection.
  • A stable local address: The rule needs to point to the right LAN device. If that device’s local IP address changes, the rule can point to the wrong destination. Reserve an address for it in the router if supported.
  • A reachable WAN path: The router must have a public WAN address, or any upstream router or network translation must also be addressed. A rule on your home router alone may not be enough.
  • An outside-network test: A test from the same Wi-Fi may fail when the router does not support NAT loopback, even if outside access works.

Set up the rule in the right order

  1. Find the service requirements. Check the app, device, or server documentation for the required port number or range and whether it uses TCP, UDP, or both.
  2. Confirm the service is ready. Start the service on the intended device, verify that it listens on the required port, and check the device firewall for an applicable allow rule.
  3. Keep the destination address stable. In the router’s LAN or DHCP settings, reserve an address for the device, or otherwise make sure it retains the address the forwarding rule will use.
  4. Enter the forwarding rule. Open the router’s model-specific port-forwarding, virtual-server, or port-opening page. Choose the destination device, protocol, and required external and internal ports. Field names and screen layouts vary by router and firmware; Google’s and ASUS’s instructions show examples of these settings, not a universal interface.
  5. Check the WAN address. Compare the router’s WAN address with the address your internet connection presents publicly, and check whether the WAN address falls in a private or shared range described below. If there is an upstream router, its configuration may also matter.
  6. Test from outside your home network. Use a mobile device with Wi-Fi disabled or another internet connection. A failed test while connected to your home Wi-Fi may reflect missing NAT loopback rather than a broken external route.
  7. Review overlapping rules. If more than one rule could match the same traffic, check for duplicates and the router’s rule order. NETGEAR documents display-order matching on supported interfaces; behavior can differ by model.

Why port forwarding fails: locate the break

What you observe Where to check What it may mean
It works on the home network but not from the internet WAN address, upstream router, or ISP network Your router may be behind another layer of NAT or carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), so an incoming connection cannot reach the rule on the inner router.
The rule saves, but an outside connection times out Service status, listening port, host firewall, and protocol The router may be forwarding traffic correctly, but the destination device may not accept it. Recheck the service’s documented port and protocol as well as its firewall.
The rule worked, then stopped Destination device’s LAN address The device may have received a different local IP address, leaving the rule pointed at its old address.
A test from the same Wi-Fi fails NAT loopback and test location The router may not send a local device’s request back through the public WAN path. Retest using a genuinely external connection.
Two services or rules compete for the same traffic Duplicate rules, overlapping matches, and rule order The router may apply one matching rule before another. The exact behavior depends on the router interface and firmware.

Check for double NAT or CGNAT

Port forwarding can fail even when the rule and service are correct if the router’s WAN address is not directly reachable from the public internet. ASUS identifies these private IPv4 ranges: 10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255. A WAN address in one of these ranges can indicate another router upstream. In a multi-router setup, forwarding may need to be configured on the upstream router as well; ASUS warns that forwarding may not function properly if this upstream condition is left unaddressed.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The range 100.64.0.0–100.127.255.255 is reserved for shared address space commonly associated with CGNAT. If your WAN address is in this range, contact your ISP to ask whether inbound connections are available and what options it supports. The forwarding rule on your router cannot, by itself, make a shared ISP-side address directly reachable.

Check your router’s documentation for instructions specific to its model and firmware, and ask your ISP to clarify the connection type. A private or shared WAN address is a reason to investigate the upstream path, not to keep changing the same local rule.

Test from outside, not just from your own Wi-Fi

When a device on your LAN tries to reach a forwarded service using your public address, the router must support NAT loopback to send that request back inside. Google describes NAT loopback as allowing local devices to check a forwarded device through the public WAN path. If the test fails on home Wi-Fi, try a mobile connection with Wi-Fi switched off or another outside network before concluding that remote access is broken.

Keep the rule limited and secure

Forward only the ports and protocols the service actually requires. Keep the destination device and service updated and secured, and remove forwarding rules you no longer need. A port-forwarding rule deliberately creates an inbound path to the selected device.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Do not use a DMZ setting as a casual substitute for a specific forwarding rule. NETGEAR says its DMZ feature forwards all inbound traffic to a chosen LAN address and removes the router’s firewall protection for that device. That is a broader exposure than opening only a service’s required port.
