The right pool booster pump is the one that matches your pressure-side cleaner, electrical supply and plumbing—not simply the one with the largest-looking specification. Pentair’s published options include pumps with different port sizes and performance figures, but the available manufacturer information does not establish a tested winner for every pool.
What a pool booster pump does
A pool booster pump supplies water pressure to a compatible pressure-side automatic cleaner. It is separate from both the pool’s main filtration pump and a household water-pressure booster. The main filter pump must first deliver filtered water to the booster; the booster is not designed to run by itself.
The models below are compared using manufacturer-published specifications and compatibility notes. Those figures are not independent measurements, and the different specifications do not provide a fair head-to-head efficiency or cleaning-performance ranking.

These are the values each product page publishes, not equivalent measures across all three pumps: the LA01N lists horsepower and a pressure/flow point, the Boost-Rite lists a pressure/flow point, and HydroBoost lists THP and WEF. Do not use those unlike figures alone to predict which pump will clean better in your pool.

Choose by cleaner, electrical supply and plumbing
Start with the exact cleaner model
Find the cleaner’s model number and check its manual or manufacturer compatibility information before choosing a pump. Pentair lists the LA01N for Legend Platinum, Legend Platinum Truck Series and Legend automatic cleaners. Pentair’s Legend cleaner page names LA01N and LA-MS05 as compatible part numbers; that cleaner page is marked discontinued, so use it only as model-specific compatibility information, not as a current cleaner recommendation.
Match voltage and connections
Check the power available at the equipment pad and confirm the pump’s wiring configuration with its manual and a qualified professional. Then compare the pump’s connection size with the existing return-line layout and the cleaner’s hose requirements. LA01N has 3/4-inch ports; LA-MS05 and HydroBoost list 1-inch connections. LA01N includes hose and adapters, while the other two product pages identify hose accessories separately.

Replace like-for-like only after checking the details
For a replacement, use the existing pump model, voltage and fittings as a starting point, then verify that the new pump is suitable for the cleaner and installation. A matching name or similar-looking port does not by itself establish compatibility.

For a new installation, check the whole system
The booster connects to the filtration return side, so the layout must provide filtered water and the flow required by the selected pump and cleaner. Consider return-line routing, equipment-pad space, timer control and the installation instructions before choosing a model.

Installation and operation requirements for HydroBoost
The following placement and startup figures are specific to Pentair’s HydroBoost installation guide; check the exact manual and local rules for any other pump.
Placement and piping
- Connect the booster after the filter on the return line so it receives filtered water.
- Use at least 1-inch PVC. For a 1-inch suction-pipe run longer than 5 feet, the guide recommends a larger suction pipe.
- Install at least 5 feet from the pool or spa wall; the guide specifies 9.8 feet for Canadian installations.
- Keep the pump at least 3 feet from a heater outlet, no more than 8 feet above or 3 feet below water level, and in a ventilated location protected from excessive moisture.
- Pentair’s guide says, “Only qualified service professionals should install the booster pump.”
Startup and shutdown
- Make sure the cleaner is connected and the filter pump is running before starting the booster.
- For HydroBoost, the filtration system must provide at least 20 GPM to avoid dry running.
- Start the filter pump at least 30 minutes before the booster pump.
- When shutting down, stop the booster first and keep the filter pump running for at least 30 minutes afterward.
The guide warns that running the booster while the filter pump is off can damage the pump.

Bonding and electrical work
Pentair’s universal booster pump manual calls for a solid copper bonding conductor of at least 8 AWG in the stated US context and at least 6 AWG for Canadian installations. Electrical work and applicable code requirements should be handled by a qualified professional using the exact pump manual and local rules.

- LA01N: Check this option if your cleaner is among the Legend models Pentair names and its 3/4-inch ports and included hose and adapters fit your setup.
- Boost-Rite LA-MS05: Consider it as a replacement candidate when its 1-inch ports, voltage and cleaner requirements match; Pentair publishes a 50 psi at 13.2 US GPM specification.
- HydroBoost 360526: Check this option when its 1-inch NPT connections and 115/230 V supply fit; account for the separate hose kit and follow its installation guide’s requirements.
Manufacturer pages establish specifications and named compatibility, not a universal best pump or independent performance winner. Make the final choice from the cleaner manual, electrical supply, plumbing and installation conditions.
