Polymer welding joins compatible thermoplastics by heating their mating surfaces until the material softens or melts, then bringing the interface together so it consolidates as it cools. The term covers several processes—not one universal technique—and the right choice depends on the resin, joint shape, access, production needs, and required quality.
What polymer welding means
In this article, polymer welding refers chiefly to joining thermoplastics. Many methods create a weld by softening or melting material at the joint; they differ in how heat is delivered or generated and how the parts are held and consolidated. A method that works for one resin or part design is not automatically suitable for another.
Technical references describe hot-tool, hot-gas, extrusion, infrared, laser, ultrasonic, vibration, spin, friction, and electromagnetic approaches. The names are not interchangeable recipes: each implies different equipment, joint access, process controls, and material considerations. The ASM Handbook chapter on plastics welding surveys these methods, applications, process parameters, and evaluation.
How the main process families differ
A useful first distinction is the source of heat. The categories below orient the selection process; they do not rank methods or establish universal performance limits.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Family | How heat is generated or delivered | Examples and practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| External heating | Heat is applied to the joint from a tool, gas stream, radiant source, or focused beam. | Hot-tool or hot-plate, hot-gas, extrusion, infrared, and laser welding. Depending on the method, heating may involve contact with a tool or a non-contact source; the seam’s shape and accessibility matter. |
| Mechanical motion | Vibration or friction generates heat at the interface. | Ultrasonic, linear or orbital vibration, spin, and friction welding. Joint geometry and the way parts can move or be pressed together affect suitability. |
| Electromagnetic heating | An electromagnetic field heats the material or an interface component. | Resistance, induction, dielectric, and microwave processes. Some approaches use a susceptor or implant at the joint, making material and electrical compatibility relevant. |
These groupings describe mechanisms, not a universal comparison of speed, strength, cost, or suitability. Reviews of plastics welding and laser welding likewise organize the field by process and material considerations rather than offering a single best method for every part: Grewell and Benatar’s review, the overview of laser welding of thermoplastics, and the overview of welding methods for medical plastics.
How to choose a method for a particular part
A specific process recommendation cannot be made from the phrase “polymer welding” alone. Start with the part and its acceptance requirements, then consult a qualified process specialist or equipment supplier for a process window and validation plan.

- Identify the resin and part form. Establish the polymer or resin grade and whether the work involves molded components, sheet, or pipe. Compatibility is process-specific; do not assume that every plastic can be joined with every method.
- Define the joint. Record its geometry, dimensions, fit, and the seam’s accessibility. Determine whether the process can heat and consolidate the intended interface without obstructing adjacent features.
- Set production and control needs. Consider the required volume, repeatability, available equipment, and which process variables must be controlled. The heating mechanism alone does not determine whether a method fits the application.
- Specify acceptance criteria. Decide what the weld must withstand and how it will be inspected or tested. A weld that looks continuous is not, by appearance alone, proof that it meets a mechanical or application requirement.
- Validate the process on representative parts. Establish suitable settings and acceptance checks for the actual resin, thickness, joint, and production conditions. Standards can help define process variables or test methods, but they do not replace the full standard or application-specific qualification.
Standards and weld quality
Process variables: ISO 23512:2021
ISO 23512:2021, Plastics — Joining of thermoplastic moulded components — Specification of variables for thermal joining processes, covers a defined set of thermal joining processes for thermoplastic molded components. Its listed methods include ultrasonic welding, staking and spot welding; infrared welding; hot-gas convection welding; linear and orbital vibration welding; spin welding; laser welding; hot-plate welding; and hot-air, electrical and infrared heat staking.

The standard defines a thermal joining process specification for each listed process, including essential variables and qualified ranges. ISO’s page says the 2021 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2026, so it remains current as of that review. ISO describes its purpose this way: “This document defines the thermal joining process specification (TJPS) for each of the thermal joining processes listed above, to ensure that all the essential variables are properly considered, including the qualified range of each variable, in order to establish and maintain component quality at an acceptable level.” Its scope is specific; it is not a general instruction manual for every plastic or joining method.

Mechanical evaluation: ASTM C1147
ASTM C1147, Standard Practice for Determining the Short Term Tensile Weld Strength of Chemical-Resistant Thermoplastics, is a reference for evaluating short-term tensile weld strength. The ASTM page identifies C1147-01(2012) and says possible methods include machine, extrusion, and hot-gas welding. It cautions that no single profile or procedure is standard for all plastics at various thicknesses. Use the practice’s applicable requirements and a test plan suited to the actual material and part; a test result should not be generalized beyond the specimens and conditions evaluated.
Manual hot-gas work and equipment
For hands-on hot-gas welding of compatible thermoplastics, a hot air plastic welding kit is a relevant equipment category. It is not a general-purpose solution for every polymer or joint. The filler rod and process settings need to match the workpiece material and the chosen procedure. Technical references establish hot-gas welding as a recognized method, but that does not verify the performance or industrial suitability of any particular consumer kit. For production work with defined quality requirements, select equipment and qualify the process against those requirements rather than treating a manual repair tool as an industrial process by default.

What information is needed for a process recommendation
Before asking for a specific method, gather the details that determine whether a process can make and reliably verify the joint:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Polymer or resin grade, and any relevant material compatibility requirements.
- Whether the components are molded, sheet, or pipe, along with thickness and dimensions.
- Joint design, geometry, and access to the seam.
- Expected production volume and available process-control capability.
- Required joint performance, inspection approach, and acceptance criteria.
With these inputs, a process engineer can narrow the options and establish trials, settings, and quality checks. Without them, naming one welding method as the answer would overstate what can be concluded.
