Running a Polymarket trading bot 24/7 takes more than keeping a script online. You need reliable market discovery and data, safe authentication, correctly formed orders, position reconciliation, and a plan for disconnects, throttling, and geographic restrictions. Polymarket’s official documentation describes the platform interfaces and constraints; it does not prescribe a hosting setup or establish that any strategy will be profitable.

What does a 24/7 Polymarket bot need to do?

A continuously running bot must keep its view of the market and its own account state current, decide whether an action is allowed, submit an order using the right identifiers and parameters, and verify what actually happened. A successful API response is not by itself proof that an order filled or that a resulting position has settled.

Polymarket’s interfaces serve different jobs. Gamma provides event and market discovery and metadata; CLOB provides order books, prices, and order management; the Data API provides positions and activity. Separate WebSocket channels carry public market updates and authenticated account events. The official SDKs offer a unified interface and handle common concerns such as pagination, errors, and wallet setup.

Keep market identity distinct from outcome identifiers

Discovery must resolve the event and market version before the bot acts. Polymarket’s first-order guide says the trading identifier differs by market version: a CTF market uses a token ID, while a Protocol V2 market uses a position ID. Do not assume that identifiers are interchangeable or hard-code a single identifier scheme across every market.

How should the bot keep market and account state current?

A practical design can use CLOB REST requests for snapshots and the public market WebSocket for live order-book and market-lifecycle updates. The authenticated user WebSocket is a separate channel for account order and trade events; public market data does not tell the bot everything about its own orders.

WebSocket connections need application-level heartbeat handling. Polymarket’s Real-Time Data documentation states: “The market WebSocket uses an application-level heartbeat. Send the text frame PING every 10 seconds; the server replies with PONG.” That heartbeat keeps the connection active; it is not a complete recovery design.

Build freshness and recovery into the process

The documentation describes the streams and order interfaces but does not prescribe a universal reconnect or reconciliation algorithm. Operationally, the bot should track whether its data is fresh, detect a dropped or stalled connection, reconnect with bounded backoff, and refresh authoritative state after an interruption. After reconnecting, compare current orders, trades, and positions with the bot’s local records before placing new orders. Otherwise, a process that has resumed may act on stale assumptions or duplicate an action already accepted by the platform.

How do authentication and wallet setup affect deployment?

Polymarket documents two authentication layers for CLOB access. L1 uses an EIP-712 wallet signature to attest control of a wallet and create or derive CLOB credentials. L2 uses API credentials with HMAC-SHA256 to authenticate private CLOB requests. An order itself also requires wallet authorization; API credentials alone do not replace that authorization.

Signing keys and API secrets are sensitive credentials. Restrict which processes and people can access them, and keep them out of application logs. Those are operational security recommendations, not a claim that the documentation mandates one particular key-storage system.

Match the signing flow to the wallet type

Polymarket identifies Deposit Wallets, legacy Proxy Wallets, and legacy Safe Wallets, and warns in its wallet documentation that flows vary by wallet type. Accounts deployed on or after May 4, 2026 use Deposit Wallets. Deposit Wallet owners can authorize a separate signer using scoped, time-limited session-key access. That can reduce the need for a continuously running service to use the owner’s direct signing authority, but its availability and permissions depend on the account and wallet flow. Confirm the applicable flow rather than assuming credentials configured for one wallet type will work for another.

What happens between submitting an order and holding a settled position?

Order submission, matching, and settlement are separate stages. Use each market’s current minimum price increment and minimum order size when constructing limit orders. The order response must be interpreted by status and identifiers, then checked against account events and authoritative position data.

Choose order behavior deliberately

  • GTC or GTD resting orders: These can remain on the book rather than immediately taking available liquidity. GTD orders have timing constraints: Polymarket’s order documentation says the order must be set at least three minutes ahead and expires one minute before the stated time.
  • Post-only orders: A post-only order is rejected if it would immediately match, preserving maker-only intent.
  • Marketable orders: These can match available liquidity, but an unfilled remainder may be canceled. Do not treat an order request as a guarantee that the full requested size will fill.

Read the response, then verify the account

Polymarket documents live for an order resting on the book, matched for an order matched against resting liquidity, and delayed for a marketable order subject to matching delay. A bot should record the returned order identifiers and status, consume account events, and reconcile against current orders and positions. The first-order guide explains that matching and asynchronous on-chain settlement are distinct; verify the resulting position after settlement instead of assuming a matched order is already a settled position.

How should a bot handle rate limits?

Polymarket’s rate-limit page describes IP-based throttling by Cloudflare using sliding windows, plus separate per-signer limits for CLOB order and cancellation calls. The following endpoint values were shown on the official page as accessed October 7, 2026; they are current documentation values, not guaranteed permanent limits.

These ceilings are not a target polling rate. Avoid needless snapshots and order churn, honor throttling responses with backoff, and check the current limits before deployment because the published values can change.

Can the bot legally and technically place orders from its deployment location?

Market-data access does not establish that order placement is available from a particular location. Polymarket’s geographic restrictions documentation says orders from blocked regions will be rejected and distinguishes completely blocked jurisdictions from locations where users are restricted to closing existing positions. The restriction is based on the requesting location.

The documented eligibility check is https://polymarket.com/api/geoblock. Check the current official restrictions and the actual deployment location before relying on order placement. Geographic rules and the published list can change.

Which deployment and data choices should you compare?

Polymarket’s official material documents interfaces and constraints, not a preferred host or a universal uptime architecture. The choices below are engineering trade-offs, not performance claims.

Choice What it changes Operational question
Hosted server vs. self-hosted machine Who is responsible for hardware, network availability, and process recovery Can you detect an outage and restore the bot without relying on someone to restart it manually?
Owner key vs. scoped signer or session key Convenience and signing authority versus key exposure and delegated permission limits Does the account’s wallet type support the signer flow, and are its permissions sufficient but appropriately scoped?
REST polling vs. WebSocket updates Simpler request/response snapshots versus ongoing connection and freshness management How will you avoid stale data, respect rate limits, and reconcile after a disconnect?
Resting GTC/GTD vs. marketable orders Persistence or maker-only intent versus taking available liquidity and possible unfilled remainder Does the order type match the strategy’s execution intent and timing?

What should happen when the process fails or restarts?

The platform documentation specifies API behavior and constraints, but does not provide a complete 24/7 operations plan. A defensible implementation should make its own state recoverable and treat interruptions as a reason to verify, not blindly resume.

  1. Detect loss of service: Monitor process health, data freshness, WebSocket heartbeat responses, and API errors rather than checking only whether the program is still running.
  2. Reconnect conservatively: Use bounded backoff after disconnects or throttling. Avoid a restart loop that compounds an outage with excessive API requests.
  3. Rebuild state: Refresh market snapshots and query current orders, activity, and positions from the relevant authoritative interfaces.
  4. Reconcile before acting: Match platform order and trade records to local records. Resolve unknown or delayed outcomes before submitting a potentially duplicate order.
  5. Resume only when prerequisites hold: Confirm data freshness, valid authentication, supported location, and market parameters before allowing new orders.

Does 24/7 uptime make a bot profitable?

No. Uptime means the service is available to observe and act; it does not establish that its decisions are sound or that orders will fill at favorable prices. Polymarket describes outcome shares, counterparties, and settlement, but the platform’s APIs and connectivity documentation provide no basis for estimating a strategy’s returns. Market, execution, and capital risks remain even when the software runs continuously.
