Do not hand a Polymarket bot a private key until you know what it will sign, which address holds the funds, and how you can stop it. A wallet signature used to establish API credentials is different from the API credentials used to submit trade requests. Token approvals are a separate authorization surface. Use the checklist below to examine each one before enabling automation.

First, distinguish a wallet key from API credentials

Polymarket documents two authentication layers. L1 uses an EIP-712 wallet signature to create or derive API credentials. L2 uses HMAC-SHA256 signatures made with those credentials for trade API requests. The authentication reference’s example signature message says, “This message attests that I control the given wallet.” That message is protocol text; it does not, by itself, explain every permission a particular bot will request. Polymarket’s authentication reference describes these layers.

API credentials are not automatically harmless: the reference says they authenticate trade requests. Before proceeding, ask the operator exactly what the bot stores, what it signs locally, whether it can post or cancel orders, and whether the same secret is used for other accounts or assets. Treat a private key as a high-impact secret because someone able to use it to sign may act as that wallet’s signer.

  1. Identify the operator and software

Confirm who maintains the bot, where its code or executable comes from, and whether you can inspect its permissions and configuration. Ask why each credential is needed. If the operator cannot give a clear answer, stop.

    • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
    • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  2. Write down both addresses

Record the signer address and the funder address, then check both in the bot’s configuration. The signer authorizes actions; the funder is the address holding Polymarket funds. They may differ in proxy-wallet setups, so confirm that the bot is configured for the wallet type you actually use. The Polymarket Python client README describes the signer and funder configuration.

  3. Check where each secret goes

Find out where the private key, API key, secret, and passphrase are stored and who or what can access them. Polymarket’s client README recommends environment variables for secrets; that is a handling practice, not proof that the bot’s code or host is secure. Do not paste secrets into chat, issue trackers, public repositories, or screenshots. Never give a seed phrase when the workflow calls only for a private key or API credentials.

Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
    • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
    • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
    • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
    • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
    • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  4. Read every signature and approval prompt

For EOA/MetaMask users, the client README says token allowances must be set before trading. Before signing an approval, verify the chain, asset, spender, and requested amount; decline any prompt you cannot explain. An allowance is a separate authorization from API credentials. The sources cited here do not establish a current approval-inspection or revocation interface, so do not assume a particular screen or recovery path.

  5. Limit what the bot can reach

Where practical, use a separate wallet or account funded only with the amount intended for the bot. This is a risk-control recommendation, not a Polymarket feature guarantee. Check the signer and funder addresses carefully, especially if they are different.

    • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more

  6. Set operating limits before launch

Decide on a maximum position size, a maximum daily loss, and a way to stop the process. These are guardrails for your setup; the cited documentation does not say Polymarket enforces them for every bot.

  7. Observe first; test live only if needed

If the bot offers read-only or paper mode, use it to check market data and configuration before authorizing trades. The client README documents read-only public methods and order management, but does not guarantee how a third-party bot behaves. If a live test is necessary, use only a small amount, then verify the order, cancellation, and balance behavior yourself.

  8. Know your stop and recovery steps

Before launch, establish how to stop the bot, cancel open orders, rotate or revoke its API credentials if supported, and review outstanding approvals. Polymarket’s authentication reference documents creating or deriving credentials and revoking builder keys; that does not establish that all user API credentials or token approvals use the same revocation mechanism. Verify the procedure for your account and client before relying on it.

Check compatibility before choosing a signing setup

The Python client README lists EOA, email/Magic, and browser-proxy signature modes, and names hardware wallets among EOA signer types. Examples and support details can change with client versions. Confirm that the exact client version and bot support your wallet setup and, if considering a hardware wallet, verify its integration and signing behavior before buying or depending on it. A hardware wallet does not make a bot safe or establish that unattended operation is supported.

What an audit or platform study can—and cannot—tell you

The 2024 proxy-wallet assessment has a defined scope

ChainSecurity’s Code Assessment of the Proxy Wallet Factories Smart Contracts, dated 11 April 2024, names proxy-wallet factory contracts and a reviewed code version. Its executive overview records two medium findings whose specifications changed. It is not an assessment of an arbitrary trading bot or every current Polymarket component, and ChainSecurity cautions that a security assessment cannot guarantee a system is secure. Read the ChainSecurity assessment for its scope and findings.

A 2026 preprint reports dataset-specific transaction findings

The 2026 arXiv preprint The Ghosts of Polymarket: When Off-Chain Matches Meet On-Chain Reverts analyzes reverted match-order transactions and vectors including allowance revocation. Its authors report 1,952,440 reverted match-order transactions, 980,133 filled orders selectively reverted, and $1.49 million in estimated profit in their analyzed dataset. These are study-specific findings, not measurements of your bot, your account, or overall current platform risk. The preprint says the issue was partially mitigated; that is not evidence that every related risk is resolved. Read the preprint and its stated scope.

Stop if you cannot answer these questions

  • What exact secret or signature is the bot requesting, and what does it use that for?
  • Which address signs, and which address holds the funds?
  • Can the bot post or cancel orders, and what approvals does the wallet need to grant?
  • Where are the secrets stored, and how will you stop access, cancel orders, and check approvals?

If any answer is unclear, do not authorize the bot. A signature, API credential, allowance, or audit is not a blanket guarantee of safety.
