There is no universally established “right” percentage of bankroll for a Polymarket bot to risk on each trade. Set an explicit operator-defined cap, then enforce it in software using available funds after reserving amounts committed to unfilled orders. Reconcile fills and current market constraints before placing another order, and pair the size limit with execution controls such as throttles, price collars, a kill switch, and an audit trail.

What a position-size cap should control

A position cap is a risk policy implemented by your bot, not a sizing recommendation supplied by Polymarket. The cited official materials do not establish an optimal bankroll percentage, a validated Kelly fraction, or a profitable strategy. Choose and document your own limit at the market and, if needed, portfolio level; treat it as a hard ceiling on exposure rather than a target the bot should always use.

Available balance is not the same as uncommitted balance. Polymarket’s Order Lifecycle documentation says order size is limited by available balance after amounts reserved by existing open orders are deducted. Your bot’s exposure ledger should therefore include both filled positions and the unfilled portions of live orders. Release a reservation only after the order is confirmed filled, canceled, or otherwise no longer active.

How to calculate an order within your cap

  1. Set the policy outside the order API. Define the maximum exposure permitted for a market and, where relevant, for the account as a whole. Specify whether the cap is fixed in dollars, relative to bankroll, or both. These are operator choices, not exchange-prescribed values.
  2. Read current account and market state. Load inventory, available balance, live orders and their remaining quantities, plus the market’s current tick and size constraints. Do not rely on a stale cached balance or assume every market uses the same constraints.
  3. Convert the remaining allowance into an order amount. Account for current inventory and pending exposure, then translate the unused portion of your cap into a buy amount or share count at the intended price. This is implementation guidance; the cited documents do not prescribe one universal sizing equation.
  4. Validate before submission. Check that the proposed price conforms to the market’s tick and that the order meets its size requirements. The order-patterns guide lists minimum-size rejection; the official lifecycle documentation also describes inadequate funds and missing allowances as possible order problems.
  5. Reserve the commitment and reconcile the result. Treat the order as pending exposure while it is live. Update the ledger from confirmed order and trade states, including partial fills, before allowing the bot to place additional buys.

Why requested size and acquired position can differ

A submitted order is not necessarily an immediate fill. A non-marketable limit order can rest on the book; some configured markets can introduce a delay; and a partially filled order leaves a remainder that may still execute. Track order state and trade state separately instead of treating the requested size as the position acquired.

A marketable order’s price limit is a worst-price bound in the order-patterns guide, not a promise that the order will execute at that price. Keep the remaining commitment reserved until cancellation or fill is confirmed. A resting limit order may remain exposed to a changing market while it waits; a marketable order may seek execution sooner but still carries price and execution uncertainty.

Choose caps that fit the risk policy

Approach What it controls Trade-off to consider
Fixed-dollar cap A set maximum exposure amount Does not automatically change when account balance changes. Decide explicitly whether open orders count against the limit.
Bankroll-relative cap A limit that changes with a defined account-balance measure Requires a clear rule for which balance is used and when it is refreshed. Outstanding commitments still need to count toward exposure.
Per-market cap Exposure in one market Can limit concentration in an individual market but does not by itself cap total exposure across markets.
Portfolio cap Total exposure across positions Requires a rule for aggregating exposures. Related markets may move together; the cited sources do not prescribe a correlation model.

These approaches can be combined, such as a bankroll-relative portfolio ceiling with lower fixed per-market limits. The sources do not identify a universally superior method or supply a default percentage.

Keep contract-specific figures in their proper scope

A March 26, 2026 CFTC filing for specified Polymarket US cryptocurrency price contracts gives a notional value of $1 per contract, a minimum tick range of 0.001 to 0.01, a $25,000 position accountability level, and margin of 100% of the at-risk amount. These are terms for the specified contracts in that filing—not a platform-wide position limit, a general sizing formula, or terms established for every jurisdiction, market, or interface.

Build safeguards around the size limit

For users of automated trading systems within its scope, the Polymarket US Rulebook requires pre-trade risk controls including order throttles, price collars, and kill switches, as well as an electronic audit trail. Those requirements concern the rulebook’s scope; they should not be generalized to every Polymarket product or jurisdiction.

As a prudent implementation safeguard, stop or reduce new orders when inputs are stale, positions cannot be reconciled, or a risk limit is exceeded. Make recovery contingent on restoring reliable state and verifying that pending orders are accounted for.

Tick size and size constraints can vary by market, so avoid hard-coding one value as universal. The Trading Help Center separates guidance on fees, limits, liquidity, rewards, and order types; its collection page does not establish one universal fee or minimum order size.
