If Poly Fighter ignores your gamepad, work through the connection layers in order: confirm Steam detects the controller, connect it by USB, enable Steam Input for Poly Fighter, turn on the Steam Overlay, calibrate the device, and temporarily remove other controller software. Poly Fighter’s Steam listing advertises Full Controller Support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers and says the developers recommend playing with a controller, so a missing gamepad is usually a detection or configuration problem rather than an unsupported game feature.
Start with the first step and relaunch the game after any Steam setting change. Do not edit files until Steam can see the controller and the basic input checks are complete.
What Poly Fighter officially supports
The official Steam listing describes Poly Fighter as having Full Controller Support, explicitly naming Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers. It also states that the developers recommend playing with a controller. That establishes intended support, but it does not guarantee that every third-party pad, wireless adapter, or remapping layer will be recognized in every configuration.

SteamDB’s current configuration metadata marks the game as Gamepad Preferred. Its DualShock and DualSense categories are marked USB Only, which makes a wired test especially important for PS4 and PS5 controllers. A generic DirectInput gamepad may still work through Steam Input translation, but a native XInput/Xbox-mode device is generally the simpler diagnostic baseline.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
| Controller type | What the available metadata establishes | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox controller | Named by the official listing; Xbox-compatible controllers commonly expose an XInput mode. | Connect by USB and verify that Steam lists it before launching Poly Fighter. |
| PS4 DualShock 4 | Named by the official listing; SteamDB marks the DualShock category USB only. | Use a USB data cable, not a wireless connection, for the first test. |
| PS5 DualSense | Named by the official listing; SteamDB marks the DualSense category USB only. | Connect directly by USB, then check Steam’s detected-controller list. |
| Generic DirectInput pad | Not specifically named by the listing; operation may depend on Steam Input translation. | Enable Steam Input and test with only that physical controller connected. |
1. Check whether Steam detects the controller
First separate a game problem from a Windows or Steam detection problem. If Steam cannot see the device, Poly Fighter cannot receive input from it through Steam.
- Open the Steam client and open its controller settings. The exact page can vary slightly by client layout, but look for the section that lists detected controllers or controller configurations.
- Connect the controller and check whether its model or a generic gamepad entry appears.
- Use the controller test or input display, if shown, to press buttons and move the sticks. Confirm that Steam receives those signals.
- If the device is absent, unplug it, reconnect it firmly, and try a different USB port. Test another known-good data cable; some cables provide power only.
- Close and reopen Steam after reconnecting, then check the detected-controller list again.
Do not launch Poly Fighter until this check succeeds. A controller that is missing from Steam needs a Steam or Windows connection fix first, not an in-game setting change.
2. Use a direct wired connection for the first test
Wireless pairing introduces additional variables: Bluetooth pairing state, an adapter, battery level, and the controller profile presented to Steam. Remove those variables by connecting the pad directly to the PC with USB.
For PS4 and PS5 controllers
The SteamDB metadata marks DualShock and DualSense support categories as USB only. Connect the controller with a USB data cable, wait for it to appear in Steam’s detected-controller list, and test Poly Fighter before trying Bluetooth again. If a wireless setup works only intermittently, keep the wired connection while diagnosing the rest of the configuration.
For Xbox controllers
Use a direct USB connection and confirm that Steam reports button and stick activity. If the controller has a physical or software-selectable input mode, choose its standard Xbox/XInput mode for the cleanest baseline. Avoid testing through a third-party wireless receiver until the wired test works.

For other gamepads
Use a cable known to carry data and connect directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub. Generic pads can present as DirectInput devices, so Steam Input may need to translate their signals before the game can use them.
3. Enable Steam Input for Poly Fighter
Steam’s controller troubleshooting guidance recommends enabling Steam Input when a game does not recognize a controller. Set the game-specific option rather than relying on a global profile.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click Poly Fighter and choose Properties.
- Select the Controller page.
- Set the game’s Steam Input option to Enabled.
- Close the Properties window, fully quit Poly Fighter, and launch it again.
Relaunching matters because the game may read the controller layer only when it starts. Keep one physical controller connected while testing so you can identify which device Steam Input is translating.
If you previously changed the setting several times, return it to Enabled, restart Steam, and perform a clean launch. The available support material does not document a Poly Fighter-specific reason to disable Steam Input; Enabled is the recommended starting state for an unrecognized controller.
4. Make sure the Steam Overlay is available
Steam Support states, “The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality.” If the overlay is disabled globally or for Poly Fighter, Steam’s controller layer may not be available to the game.

- Open Steam’s general settings and confirm that the in-game overlay is enabled.
- Open Poly Fighter’s Properties and check the game’s General page for the per-game overlay option.
- Enable the overlay for Poly Fighter, close the window, and restart the game.
- While the game is running, use Steam’s overlay shortcut to verify that the overlay opens. If it does not, quit the game and Steam completely, reopen Steam, and try again.
Do not treat the overlay test as proof that the game itself is receiving every button. It confirms that Steam’s controller functionality can attach to the running game; input testing still needs to be done in Poly Fighter.

5. Calibrate the controller in Steam
A controller can appear in Steam yet send incomplete or incorrect signals. Calibration is useful when sticks drift, a trigger is not reaching its full range, or buttons appear to be missing.
- Open Steam’s Big Picture Mode.
- Open Settings, then Controller, then Controller settings.
- Select the detected controller.
- Run the calibration process and follow the on-screen instructions for stick movement, triggers, and other controls.
- Return to the controller test screen and confirm that all inputs register consistently.
- Exit Big Picture Mode and relaunch Poly Fighter.
Calibration cannot make an electrically failed button work, and it does not repair a missing USB connection. Its purpose is to correct the way Steam interprets a controller that it already detects.
6. Remove input conflicts while testing
Temporarily close software that can create a virtual controller, remap buttons, or take exclusive control of a gamepad. Examples include controller remappers, virtual-controller drivers, macro utilities, and other gamepad configuration tools. This is an isolation step, not a claim that Poly Fighter has a documented conflict with a particular program.
- Exit the remapping or virtual-controller software completely, including any background component in the notification area.
- Disconnect extra gamepads, racing wheels, arcade sticks, and virtual devices.
- Leave one physical controller connected.
- Restart Steam, confirm the remaining device is detected, and launch Poly Fighter.
- If the game now works, reconnect devices or re-enable tools one at a time to identify the interfering layer.
Testing one device at a time prevents Steam Input from assigning the wrong profile or sending commands from an unexpected controller.

7. Match the controller family and input protocol
The official listing names Xbox and PlayStation controllers, so those families are the most defensible compatibility baseline. A replacement or alternate pad should be evaluated by protocol, connection, Steam visibility, and physical layout rather than by brand name alone.
| Decision factor | Why it matters | Preferred diagnostic choice |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | Native XInput/Xbox mode is usually presented to PC games in the format they expect; generic DirectInput may require translation. | An Xbox-compatible XInput mode. |
| Connection | Wireless adds pairing and adapter variables, while the PlayStation metadata is USB only. | A direct USB cable during troubleshooting. |
| Steam visibility | The game cannot use a device that Steam does not enumerate. | A controller that appears in Steam’s detected-controller list. |
| Layout and prompts | Button labels and physical placement affect setup and on-screen guidance. | Xbox or PlayStation layout matching your preference. |
If a generic DirectInput pad works in Steam’s test but not in Poly Fighter, keep Steam Input enabled and retest with no other controller software running. If possible, compare with a wired Xbox-compatible or PlayStation controller to determine whether the issue is device-specific.

PCGamingWiki documents this Windows per-user location for Poly Fighter:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowHeartLoop GamesPoly Fighter
Use the folder only after the connection, Steam Input, overlay, calibration, and conflict checks have failed. The available documentation does not identify a verified input file that is safe to delete or edit, so do not remove random files or assume that deleting the directory will reset controller settings.

- Quit Poly Fighter and Steam.
- Copy the entire folder to a separate backup location.
- Record which files are present and retain the backup unchanged.
- Make only a targeted change if official support later gives you a specific file or reset instruction.
- Restore the backup if a change causes new launch or settings problems.
Because no developer-authored reset procedure is established, configuration editing is a diagnostic precaution rather than a guaranteed fix.
9. Use symptom-based checks
| Symptom | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Controller does not appear in Steam | Reconnect it, change the USB port or data cable, and resolve Steam or Windows detection before opening the game. |
| Steam sees it, but Poly Fighter does not | Enable Steam Input for Poly Fighter, restart the game, and verify the Steam Overlay. |
| Only some buttons or sticks work | Calibrate the detected controller in Big Picture Mode and test with other remapping software closed. |
| PS4 or PS5 pad fails wirelessly | Repeat the test over USB because SteamDB marks those controller categories USB only. |
| Generic pad is detected but ignored in-game | Keep Steam Input enabled and compare behavior with a supported Xbox or PlayStation controller. |
| Input works until another device is connected | Disconnect all additional physical and virtual controllers, then add them back one at a time. |
10. Collect useful details before contacting support
If the ordered checks do not restore input, contact HeartLoop Games through its official support or community channels with reproducible information. Include:
- The exact controller model and whether it is Xbox, PlayStation, or a generic DirectInput device.
- Whether the connection is USB or wireless, and which USB cable or adapter was used during testing.
- Your Windows version.
- Whether Steam lists the controller under detected controllers.
- The Steam Input setting shown on Poly Fighter’s Controller properties page.
- Whether the Steam Overlay opens while Poly Fighter is running.
- Whether calibration detects every stick, trigger, and button.
- Whether the problem remains with other controller software closed and only one device connected.
- The exact point of failure: absent from Steam, visible in Steam but not in the game, or partially functional.
These details distinguish a Windows enumeration issue from a Steam configuration issue and from a game-specific input problem, reducing back-and-forth troubleshooting.

A charging cable may not carry data
A controller can light up while using a power-only cable. If Steam never lists the device, test a cable known to transfer data before changing game settings.
Changing Steam Input requires a restart
Poly Fighter may not reread the controller layer during an active session. Fully exit the game after changing the Controller property and launch it again.
One successful Steam test is not enough for every device
Steam can detect several controllers at once, but Poly Fighter may receive input from a different device than the one you intended. Disconnect extras while establishing a baseline.
Wireless success should come after wired success
A working USB test proves that the controller, its basic profile, and the game’s Steam path can communicate. Wireless can then be evaluated as a separate pairing or adapter variable.
