The Polaroid Mod makes four creative effects easy to select with a physical dial, but it is not a fully manual camera: exposure misses and the cost of instant film make experimentation a real trade-off. It suits photographers who want to try double exposures, split frames, light painting, and motion effects without navigating an app; it is less suited to anyone who needs precise control or wants every frame to work.

What is the Polaroid Mod?

The Polaroid Mod is an analog instant camera with an Auto setting and four dial-selected creative modes: Double Exposure, Split Shot, Motion Freeze, and Light Painting. Polaroid also lists a brightness dial and two-lens autofocus. The core idea is to put these effects on the camera rather than require a photographer to begin in a full manual mode.

That simplicity is about access, not comprehensive control. The Mod does not offer a manual mode, so photographers who want to set exposure precisely may find its creative options limiting. Polaroid’s product page describes its features; its support site provides a digital manual, quick-start guide, and tips sheet.

How do the Polaroid Mod’s modes work?

Mode What it does Practical setup
Auto Captures a standard instant photograph. Use it for ordinary shots when you do not want a creative effect.
Double Exposure Combines two exposures on one frame. The review reports that the Mod supports two shots, not triple exposure. Compose and expose each image on the same frame. Precise alignment can be difficult because the viewfinder has parallax.
Split Shot Exposes two halves of one frame as separate shots. Use the included half-lens cover: cover one side for the first exposure, move it to the other side, then take the second.
Light Painting Uses a long exposure to record moving light. Digital Camera World describes a six-second exposure. Keep the camera stable on a tripod, table, or other firm surface while moving a light source through the scene.
Motion Freeze Uses a longer exposure with a flash burst at the end. Digital Camera World describes a three-second exposure. Ambient lights can streak during the exposure while the flashed subject may appear sharper.

The modes make effects easier to try, but they do not remove the need to plan a composition. The viewfinder’s parallax—the difference between what the viewfinder shows and what the lens captures—can make close framing particularly awkward for split shots and double exposures.

What is it like to shoot with the Mod?

Digital Camera World reviewer Hillary K. Grigonis found the creative effects accessible, but reported inconsistent exposure, difficulty with precise close framing, and repeated need to turn the flash off. She also found that switching the flash off did not keep it off for the next shot. Those are observations from her test, not a guarantee of how every user or scene will turn out.

Grigonis said she liked about half the photographs she made over two film packs. That is her personal result, not a product-wide success rate. It illustrates the central compromise: the dial lowers the barrier to trying unusual effects, while the camera’s limited control and the analog workflow can mean unusable frames. In low light, shooting without flash can produce blur or dark images; the review also found that long-exposure results could be brighter.

A second Digital Camera World hands-on report notes exposure-compensation and flash controls, while also observing that more experienced photographers may want manual control for some longer or brighter exposures. Taken together, the Mod is best approached as an experimental camera rather than a precision tool.

What film does the Polaroid Mod use, and what does each shot cost?

The Mod supports Polaroid i-Type and 600 film. The Digital Camera World review listed i-Type at $18.99 in the US or £15.90 in the UK for an eight-exposure pack at the time it was written in 2026—about $2.25 or £1.98 per print, respectively. Those are dated figures, not current prices; check local retailers for today’s pack price and availability.

Because each creative attempt consumes film, the per-frame cost matters more here than it might with a digital camera. If you plan to experiment with multiple compositions or exposures, budget for some frames that may not come out as intended. Film prices vary by market and can change.

Camera Creative controls What to consider
Polaroid Mod Four creative modes selected on the camera’s dial. Useful if you want effects available without an app; it lacks full manual control.
Polaroid Now+ Gen 3 The review describes app-based manual modes and double exposure; light painting takes more know-how. Consider it if an app-based workflow and manual options matter more than having the Mod’s effects on a physical dial.
Polaroid Flip The review describes app-based manual modes. Digital Camera World also describes sonar autofocus and a powerful flash. Compare current camera and film prices in your market before choosing.

Body prices and compatible-film costs change, so the launch and review prices are not a reliable current comparison. Check the live price in your country and the cost of the film you expect to use.

Who should buy the Polaroid Mod?

  • It may suit you if you want an analog instant camera with creative effects selected directly on the body, and you are comfortable with some trial and error.
  • Look elsewhere if you need dependable exposure, precise close framing, or full manual control—or if the cost of wasted instant-film frames would frustrate you.
  • For Light Painting, plan on a stable support such as a tripod or table; holding the camera still is important during the long exposure.
