Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are announced as new Pokémon role-playing games for Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for simultaneous worldwide release in 2027. Their announced setting is an open world made up of windswept islands and a vast ocean, where Pokémon have developed distinct ecosystems. The confirmed first partners are Browt, Pombon and Gecqua.
The announcement confirms the broad setting, the three starters, version-specific player outfits and a journey involving Pokémon, environmental obstacles and forces of nature. It does not yet provide a named region, a detailed plot, battle-system information, an exact release date or a price. The facts below come from The Pokémon Company International’s official announcement page and the Pokémon Day 2026 Pokémon Presents recap.

That is the complete confirmed outline at announcement stage. The two titles are not presented as separate hardware releases: both require the Nintendo Switch 2 console.
Release timing and Nintendo Switch 2 requirement
The Pokémon Company has announced a simultaneous worldwide release during 2027. “Simultaneous worldwide” establishes the same planned launch period across markets, but the official material does not name a day or month. There is also no published price, preorder date or launch-edition information in the announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
Both games are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Anyone planning to play will therefore need that console rather than an original Nintendo Switch model. The announcement does not describe a separate version for older hardware, a cloud edition or another platform.
Because the games are unreleased, launch details can change. The safest way to verify a date, price or preorder announcement is to check the official game page and later notices from The Pokémon Company, rather than treating retailer listings or social-media claims as confirmed.
The announced region: islands, ocean and living ecosystems
The setting is described as an open world containing “beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow.” This wording establishes two major environmental components: land divided into islands and a large body of water connecting or surrounding them. It does not say how many islands exist, how large they are or whether every part of the ocean can be explored.

That is a statement about the world’s ecology, not a list of specific species or habitats. It suggests that Pokémon communities are shaped by local environments, but no individual island ecosystem, regional Pokédex entry or environmental encounter table has been announced.
No proper name has been given for the region, and the cited announcement does not identify a real-world inspiration. Descriptions such as “windswept” and “lush” are the confirmed language; maps, landmarks, cities and climate zones remain unannounced.
What “open world” confirms—and what it does not
“Open world” is official wording, so the games are being presented around a broad explorable environment rather than a strictly linear route sequence. However, the announcement does not define the map’s structure, loading behavior, quest order or access rules. It would be premature to assume a seamless ocean, unrestricted flight, sailing, swimming or any particular map system.
Rank #2
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
The ocean is prominent in the description, but its exact role is unknown. The announcement does not specify whether players travel between islands by boat, with a Pokémon, by a conventional menu, or through another method. Those details require a later official explanation.
Gameplay details that are confirmed
The announcement says players become the main character and work with Pokémon to face the journey and forces of nature that can block their path. This is the clearest gameplay statement so far: Pokémon are presented as partners in dealing with environmental challenges, not merely as battle participants.
“Forces of nature” could refer to weather, terrain or other hazards, but the official material does not define the phrase. No named traversal move, tool, puzzle type or environmental status effect has been shown. Likewise, the announcement does not explain how obstacles are discovered, whether they gate story progress or which Pokémon can help with them.
Systems that have not been detailed
- The battle format, including whether battles use an established turn structure or a revised system.
- Specific exploration abilities such as swimming, climbing, flying or sailing.
- How natural obstacles function and whether they require particular Pokémon.
- Multiplayer, trading, online features or cooperative play.
- Starter evolution lines, regional forms and other new Pokémon beyond the announced examples.
Until an official update addresses these points, trailers, fan theories and unofficial reports should be treated as speculation rather than features of the games.
How Winds and Waves differ so far
| Edition | Confirmed platform | Announced setting | Confirmed visual difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Winds | Nintendo Switch 2 | Open world of islands and a vast ocean | The player character wears an outfit specific to Winds |
| Pokémon Waves | Nintendo Switch 2 | Open world of islands and a vast ocean | The player character wears an outfit specific to Waves |
The source establishes the edition names and the outfit variation only. It does not announce version-exclusive Pokémon, different storylines, separate maps or exclusive gameplay systems. Choosing an edition therefore cannot yet be based on any confirmed content difference beyond the title and character clothing.

The three confirmed first partners
Browt, Pombon and Gecqua are the announced starter choices. Their types follow the familiar Grass, Fire and Water trio, while their official descriptions give each one a distinct physical design and temperament. The announcement lists an ability for each, but does not explain the abilities’ in-game effects.
Rank #3

- The Pokémon Shining Pearl game brings new life to this remade classic with added features
- Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
- Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show

| Pokémon | Category | Type | Height | Weight | Ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browt | Bean Chick Pokémon | Grass | 0.3 m | 3.5 kg | Overgrow |
| Pombon | Puppy Pokémon | Fire | 0.4 m | 6.7 kg | Blaze |
| Gecqua | Water Gecko Pokémon | Water | 0.3 m | 4.3 kg | Torrent |
Browt
Browt is the Grass-type Bean Chick Pokémon. It runs energetically and photosynthesizes through leaves on its brow. The official description characterizes it as lively and sometimes clumsy, giving the Grass choice an active, playful personality rather than a purely quiet or defensive presentation.
Pombon
Pombon is the Fire-type Puppy Pokémon. A heat-generating organ in its lungs causes the area below its throat to glow faintly. Its description emphasizes a guileless, friendly nature. That combination of visible warmth and an approachable temperament is the main identity revealed for the Fire starter so far.
Gecqua
Gecqua is the Water-type Water Gecko Pokémon. It launches springy balls of water from its tail and is described as intelligent and shrewd, with an affected air. The tail-based water attack is a character detail in the announcement; no battle move name or combat statistics have been provided.

What the starter information does—and does not—tell you
The type triangle gives players a familiar starting choice, but the announcement does not reveal final evolutions, learnsets, hidden abilities, stat tendencies or competitive roles. At this stage, a choice can be made from the confirmed type and personality descriptions, not from an evidence-based ranking of long-term performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu
The announcement also shows two specially named Pikachu: Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. Their names and appearances connect them to the two game titles, but their function is deliberately left open. The official page says their role in the adventure will be announced later.
There is currently no confirmation that either character is a starter, partner, mascot, battle encounter, story guide or version-exclusive Pokémon. Any of those descriptions would go beyond what has been announced.
Rank #4
- Don the role of a Pokémon Trainer as you travel through Kanto
- Discover a new species of Pokémon with the Pokémon Lets Go series
- Catch Pokémon in the wild using a gentle throwing motion with either a Joy-Con controller or a Poké Ball Plus accessory, which will light up, vibrate, and make sounds to bring your adventure to life
- See the world in style by customizing Pikachu and your Trainer with a selection of outfits
- Connect to Pokémon GO* to transfer caught Kanto-region Pokémon, including Alolan and Shiny forms, as well as the newly discovered Pokémon, Meltan, from that game to this one
Important unanswered questions
The following details are not established by the cited official material:
- The region’s proper name and any real-world source of inspiration.
- The main plot, characters, antagonists and stakes.
- Battle rules, camera style, new battle features and progression systems.
- Whether the games support multiplayer, trading or other online functions.
- The exact traversal systems used to cross islands and ocean areas.
- The precise meaning of the natural obstacles and forces of nature.
- Evolution lines or later forms for Browt, Pombon and Gecqua.
- The role of Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu.
- An exact launch date, price, physical edition and preorder schedule.
These are ordinary gaps for an early announcement, not evidence that the features will be absent. They simply have not been specified on the official pages available so far.
How to judge new trailers and rumors
When new information appears, separate direct confirmation from interpretation. A reliable update should identify the game, show the relevant feature or describe it on an official Pokémon or Nintendo channel, and clarify whether it applies to Winds, Waves or both.
- Check the official announcement page for wording about the region, Pokémon and systems.
- Check the Pokémon Day 2026 recap and later official news posts for release information.
- Note the exact edition, platform and date attached to each announcement.
- Keep demonstrated features separate from fan predictions about evolutions, version exclusives or traversal.
This approach matters especially for the two editions. At present, the only confirmed gameplay-adjacent difference between Winds and Waves is the player outfit; claims of exclusive Pokémon or story content need a primary-source announcement before they can be treated as fact.
What you can say with confidence now
Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are 2027 Nintendo Switch 2 RPGs built around an open world of islands and ocean. Browt, Pombon and Gecqua are the confirmed first partners, and environmental challenges are part of the announced journey. The setting’s name, the detailed mechanics and most launch information remain to be revealed, so any buying or starter decision today should be based only on those confirmed elements.
